I ask this because I'm supposed ot have them all taken out in 2 weeks...if you did how long did you have to wait until you could talk normally and how painful was it?

well, as I recall the main difference pain-wise, is if theyre impacted or not. Mine werent and it was no biggie..I mean, youll know you had surgery for a few days, and youll be eating jello and stuff..but youll be ok. Ive heard however that if theyer impacted...look out! Good luck budday!

i was around 15 and had 4 "impacted" wisdom teeth removed. my eldest brother had to take me home and when the anesthesia wore off I will tell you brother that it was a night from hell... i bled and bled and bled with alot of pain and pain and pain... there was no sleeping that night and for some reason there were no pain killers.
the moral of the story is 'get a good prescription of pain killers' and you'll be fine...

yeah, I had three out of the four removed, two at once and the other on a seperate visit. It wasnt painful at all, just bloody. I got nitrous and a perscription for Tylenol 4 which was the best part.

if you dont get knocked out the worst part is seeing the dentist straining and trying to get leverage to yank the teeth out, even though its not painful you can hear your jaw making these crunching noises.

I had my bottom two removed, and it was not as bad as I thought. Once the novacaine wore off, it was sore and the pain was tolerable. Ask for pain killers just in case...plus it's always good to have a supply of drugs.

When they took mine out, they knocked me out, and it was so weird, because they give you a shot, the doctor asks you something, then, its like 2 hours later and the nurse is bringing you into a resting room. Theyll probably tell you to have someone take you home. Youll go home, your mouth will be numb and youll want to sleep. You go to sleep a few hours and youll wake up, your mouth will still be numb but its wearing off and you become aware of the stitches inside your gums. Itll be a little painful, but not too bad, and maybe a little blood. For the next 2 weeks youll play with the stitches till that have you come back and THEN itll hurt when they zip them out! The mouth is the fastest healing part of your body, so youll be ok.

I had mine done about five years ago. THe dentist I went to was a friend of mine. He knew his shit! Did two at a time, and only one was impacted. He used a homeopathic antiinflammatory during the procedure and gave me some to take home for the pain later. The impacted tooth hurt more than the rest and for that one he gave me good ol fasioned vicodin, which was nice too :)

I was 17, my wisdom teeth were impacted, so they knocked me out completely. My dad drove me back to the house afterwards, and I slept off the anesthesia. My father went out to get my prescription painkillers, but decided to run a few errands along the way. I woke up and was in such pain that I kicked a hole in the wall in my room. Once I got meds, everything was fine, except my face was shaped like a pear because of the swelling.
A friend of mine had her teeth done by the same doctor, and everything seemed to go fine until a couple of days into the healing process, and something didn't seem right. She went back to the doctor to find out what the problem was.
It turns out that after pulling out her wisdom teeth, he accidentally sewed her cheek to her gums,

I had 2 of mine taken out 'bout a year ago. Mine weren't impacted, and it didn't really hurt. I got 4 shots of anethstesia, and my lower jaw was completely numb. It was weird watchin this guy take a wrench and a scalpal (sp?) and start cuttin into your gums and not feeling a thing (except for the one on the left. Apparently it got stuck, and that hurt like hell, but not a pain that really hurt. More like if you had something that was too cold or too much for you to take and you just reacted to it unfavorably.) Then I got two cotton balls stuffed in the back of my mouth, and my teeth in a plastic case, which is upstairs in my room.
Overall, very kool experience.

I had all 4 done at once about 5 years ago. Did you know that if the dentist can't pull them out he breaks your teeth and tries to pull them out that way?
I got knocked out for mine. Midway through, I woke up, the Dentist (about half my size) was kneeling on the armrest with a giant pair of pliers (sp) in my mouth. I looked up at him with a look of murderous intent, he yelled, "Put him out! Put him out!" Whoever was running the gas machine cranked it up.
When I walked out to leave, my mouth was packed with gauze and it hurt. A lot. There was a lot of fluid in my mouth. I spit. It looked like someone had an early term abortion in the parking lot.

I had all four of mine pulled several months ago. One was impacted, one was partially, the other two fully grown out. They knocked me out, and when I woke up I didn't feel "loopy" or "drunk" as people say. No pain at all...just a lot of bleeding. Had to change the gauze at least 8 or 9 times before I went to bed. But I was back on solid food the next day.

i still have mine, and i have a decent amount of pain from one of them every couple of months or so. i just decide to tough it out. then, when i wake up in the middle of the night in horrific pain, i decide to get it pulled. then, when i wake up in the morning and can think straight, i decide to tough it out again. plus, i have no dental insurance.

i think that's around when mine started bothering me, too. so, in my completely uninformed opinion, i think it's pretty common.

Mine have been growing in and giving me a little pain every few months for about 5 years. Does anyone know if it's true that not getting wisdom teeth pulled when they need to be can fuck up your orthodontic work? I asked a dentist once and was told it's a myth, contrary to the many snaggle-toothed people who have told me that was the cause.

Yeah it can mess up your teeth, if there's not enough room for them they start to push the others out of the way to make more space.

What does it mean if your tooth is impacted?
Essentially that it's stuck in the gum. Your dentist should have shown you x-rays of your teeth, and if not, ask to see them. My impacted tooth was clearly visible beneath the gumline, and was actually growing sideways INTO my other teeth.

No, actually a wisdom tooth that's growing sideways into your other teeth won't necessarily mess up your other teeth. It CAN, but apparently it's not as common as people would have you believe. The biggest reason for getting them out, particulalry impacted ones, is because you can get various badness in the gums around them, and it can make your 2nd molars more prone to getting cavities, etc.

I've had 3 out of 4 pulled. When that last one gets to bugging me, out it'll come as well.
The way I heard it, is that lots of people don't have room enough for the extra teeth in the back there, so that's why problems develope.
Maybe that's just the way it is for me.
" and they ask me why I drink"
I had all four of mine pulled at once. They gave me some valium during the operation and put blinds over my eyes. They'd ask me if I was ok after each one was pulled and I'd give 'em a thumb up. I took a couple of tylenol with codeine, some salt rinses, and I was golden.

When they talk about humans having 32 teeth, they are including the wisdom teeth. You don't necessarily need to have them out, but from every dentist I have heard from they alleviate the crowding on other teeth. Mine didn't bother me, but I had them out while still covered on the parents' insurance.

I had headaches every day from about the time I was 18 until I had all 4 impacted wisdom teeth taken out at once when I was 25.
They knocked me out after they told me it would take about 20 minutes. I woke up about an hour and a half later. The two top ones came out all right but the two bottom ones were growing in at such an angle they had to drill them and then chisel them apart.
As I was waking up they told they discovered one of the drill bits was broken. They took X-rays and found it was still in the right side of my jaw. The doctor gave me a local, pulled out the stitches, dug around in there, pulled it out, showed it to me, and stitched me up again. I'm grateful someone noticed this so it wasn't left in there to cause me problems later.
They wanted me to lay down afterwards, but I wasn't groggy or swollen so I went home. I had a ride but I could have driven myself. They gave me Tylenol w/ Codine but I didn't have any pain. I took the next day off from work but I went out that night to a bar with some friends.
The only lingering problem I have is my gums collapsed on the top on both sides. Whenever I eat, food gets stuck in the top right side.
Bottom line, I recommend you do it and get it over with, preferably if you have dental insurance. They will never get better, they'll only get worse as you get older.
am I the only one that hasn'ty had their wisdom teeth out?

I extract wisdom teeth on almost a daily basis...
If you're worried about pain...the pain meds will take care of it.
If you're worried about the swelling, sometimes they give you steroids.
If you're worried about the infection, they'll give you antibiotics.
It's best to get it done on a Friday. By Monday you'll be okay to function at work. Just DON"T SMOKE! The idiots I see that come back to me are the ones who smoke the day they got their teeth extracted and develop dry socket. If you want to talk about pain, get dry socket and then you'll want to put your head through a friggin' wall!

I haven't had mine out and it's starting to be a problem. They're not crowding my mouth too much, but one of them has a super sharp part that sometimes bites down on the back part of my gum. It's very painful, and once I do it, I keep doing it all day.

This reminds me of the brian reagan bit. "never tell a two wisdom tooth story." Anyway, I got my wisdom teeth at 13. Kinda young. I had one pulled out because it came in too crooked. I also had 4 regular teeth pulled for braces. My mouth was too small for the amount of teeth I had, I guess.
The regular teeth were normal. Two trips to the dentist, and it was over. The wisdom tooth was at an oral surgeon. I don't remember it being too bad. He used novacain and gas, but I was awake. He split it in to, and pulled each half out. It was funny after was done though, because I was missing 5 teeth. I looked so funny, but it was cool because I spent most of the days squirting water out of the gaps in my teeth. fun stuff.

i had all 4 impacted taken out at the same time...the doc gave me intravenous Valium to knock me out, but i woke up as he was finishing tooth #3...the worst part was having to be awake while he cut open my gums and ratcheted out the 4th one...a couple of percocets will take away the pain and the swelling is gone in a week...but it definitely sucks bigtime...
I had mine out at 24. Three were horizontially impacted. The other was fine. I got novocane, laughing gas AND a valium drip. The surgery went fine, i have nothing, but fond memories of it (except when I threw up in my moms car on the way home). I ended up with dry sockets afterward which was extremely painful for 2 weeks, but my doctor had some homeopathic clove oil stuff which worked WONDERS (I normally don't believe in that crap, but this worked). I was fine in no time. I only got Tylenol with Codeine. I was hoping for Vicodin, but alas, no dice.
Plus, how awesome is it to have an excuse to only eat ice cream and jell-o.
Good luck (or get better) depending on when you read this.

I had all four out when I was like 16. It was a bloody blur for me.

I'm guessing you are a dentist or oral surgeon? I got all 4 impacted teeth removed last July and it was a horrific recovery for me. Ever since, I can't open my mouth all the way without soreness/pain. Like, a big hamburger sandwich, my mouth hurts from opening to fit the sandwich in. Chewing hurts too. WTF is that all about? I think I got a hack dentist. It took me almost 2 weeks to be able to eat real food again after the surgery.
