This is to go a companion to the overrated bands thread. Music is a subjective subject so tastes and opinions overrun most ideas of overrated. i want to hear what people think are some of the most underrated bands (current or past).
I.E.:
Marc Bolan
Human Waste Project
The Animals
Mindless Self Indulgence
Dog Fashion Disco
Mushroomhead
"You guys, do you know where i can find the clitoris?"
"what is that like finding jesus or something?"

Well, it somewhat does :P
I have no real problem with it, though..
I do admit to liking the first Tomahawk album better than the second, though.

Creeper Lagoon. I still can't figure out how Take Back the Universe wasn't huge. Also underrated: Jeff Buckley. I know his name gets thrown around every once in a while and it's also hard to push a dead guy, but his voice was practically inhuman. Made me cry to see rappers on MTV's greatest voices and no Buckley.
PS. Dashboard ROCKS!!!!. I have this bad feeling they will fade back off the charts after "Hands Down" stops getting played.

Right back at you, Arienette. And I thought I was the only person (outside the band) who knew who the Trashcan Sinatras were. I guess that's what happens when you write a song called Obscurity Knocks.
Also, I'm still mad at Elliot Smith. He was great.

I'm going with the Stooges.
They were key to kicking off the movement that revitalized rock--- punk.
Often imitated, never duplicated.
Look at all the guys who've tried to be Iggy- Johnny Rotten, Axle Rose, Billy Idol, Kurt Cobain, to name a few.
No hard rock collection is complete without 1970 and Raw Power.
Over 30 years after those albums came out, cats are still trying to match the feral intensity of Iggy and the Stooges.
Who else can that be said about?
(oh, and by the way, "most" is a superlative, so there can be only one.)

Lots of these bands were/are great, but were/are critical darlings (i.e. Pixies, Stooges, Bright Eyes.)
I'll modify to add "sorely underappreciated" cause mine are/were "critically acclaimed" but nevertheless should be selling millions if 99% of people who listen to music had/have a clue:
All Time: Big Star and
The Replacments.
also:
Teenage Fanclub, Wilco, Screaming Trees (great one), Dinosaur Jr., Meat Puppets, My Bloody Valentine, Drive By Truckers, Love, Jeff Buckley when he was alive, Treepeople, The Jesus Lizard, Yo La Tengo, Uncle Tupelo, Slint, Squirrel Bait, Laughing Hyenas, Mule, pre-Runaway Train/Winona Ryder Soul Asylum, Built To Spill, Robbie Fulks, Modest Mouse, The Jayhawks, Blue Mountain, Old 97's, Mineral, Afghan Whigs, Matthew Sweet, Freedy Johnson, Young Fresh Fellows, etc.

Did you ever see the "where are they now" with them. Funny shit, seeing them walking around in full gear and playing basketball. And the one guy's answer to the show asking where they are now. And i loved his idea that the band could literally go on forever, just get new people in the costumes after the old ones get too old.

I have to agree with Whistle Pig on Iggy Pop. He was a force to be reckoned with that no one knew how to deal with. I got to see him live in 1988. It was my first time, and though he didn't writhe in peanut butter and glass, he put on an awesome show!

And I'm SO with High Fly on The Fleshtones. I've seen them more times than I've seen The Ramones. The Fleshtones put on an awesome show. More than the price of admission (maybe, $5?).

Its clearly Danzig. Not close to mainstream but more talented then most. Unbelievable voice and several totally different sounds over the years. The Misfits, samhain, and now 2 different sounds as Danzig and all sound good depending what youre into. Also he did that Black Aria which is symphony type shit and its real good.

I cant count bands like Slayer or Pantera cause I think theyre about as popular as they can be with the style of music they play. Danzig CAN fit into mainstream because instrumentally his sound has always been good and his voice is about the best around (mix between elvis and Jim Morrison). If you dont know his music and you like Rock/ Metal, do yourself a favor and check his shit out. You're most likely to like something off "Danzig" "Danzig II - Lucifuge" or "Danzig III- How The Gods Kill". If youre gonna download, allow me to provide songs for you: She Rides, Soul on Fire, devils Plaything, Anything, Bodies, dirty black summer, her black wings or sistinas. Try "American Nightmare" from the Misfit days to hear the song I actually told people was Elvis singing and they believed it.
