Hey the Drummer thread is cool; but I was the nerd at the piano at age eight, so I have some keyboard heroes.

And keyboards, let's admit, are a pretty lame instrument to play. I mean you can't really run around and thrash as much as a guitarist or bassist, or even the drummer. I mean 'macho' factor, or whatever you call it. Bad term, as many female guitarists indeed shred. Wow, is 'shred' dated?

Anyway, everyone Hates ELP, but Keith Emerson and the boys were selling out the biggest of arenas. Sure is was pompous prog-rock, but for me, he was the Hendrix of keyboards; frigging Modular Moog synth like six feet tall.

And I saw Geoff Downes of Asia, who were Huge, but a Pop band. But he was in the Buggles, and he did a solo of Buggles and stuff, and played with Yes for an album, and I saw that tour, and he rocked.

Forget the Pop: The Keyboards in "Funeral For a Friend" still put goosebumps on me. Elton is a keyboard master. Ditto Joel, listen to the solo piano section of "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant". Again, you might hate Joel's pop, but those are some serious keys.

[Edit: Duh! I forgot the Keyboardist I was thinking of: John Paul Jones of Zep. People tend to forget those AWESOME Keys on the zep albums, that was him. "In Through The Out Door" is very high on my 'best zep album' list. Most would disagree, and I totally understand. Again, a weird instrument in rock. I mean, how many Punk bands had/have keys?]

I have a few dozen more, but would rather hear others...Anyone Modern? Wow, i'm dated...

This movie cured me of any desire to play keyboards.

keyboards are like the sandy kane of instruments. back in the day, they might have been something to admire but the years have morphed into some parody of what they used to be.

case in point- synthesizing instruments. fucking garbage, lazy, and hackish.

Moe..."The 5000 fingers" is a Dr.Suess movie. If you ever see it,you will be as convinced as I am the good Dr.S was on drugs.Five years later he progressed to "Would you eat them in a box?,would you eat them with a fox?.

Talent?...no just Trippin'.

Oh I know, But I'm a Dreamer. Even ELP put out mostly overblown pompous stuff that rarely worked live. I'll argue that parts of Karn Evil Nine are great rock, but.

And Yes, and Dream Theatre and Tull and Genesis did some great stuff, but when they missed, it was horrific.

Could not agree more. I have synthesizers, and I'll be listening to a TV show and I'll hear some atmospheric music, and I'm like "that's right off the Korg Triton!' meaning it's someone literally hitting a key and off the synth goes, playing it all, nothing human at all.

And sampling has be used in some very cool ways, but some just lift so much stuff off others, load them into a synth, and make `their' album.

Don't forget the organ (Or MY organ).

Seems like every other band in the 60's had some organ noodling (WADDLE-DOODLE!) on their albums. Now it's uncooler than...well, prog rock.
