I'm all stiff-nippley about this flick finally coming to DC. (It's already been playing in NY, check website). The director of the Phantasm and Beastmaster movies chose to distribute this thing without a studio, so I was worried that I was going to have to drive up to Baltimore to see it. But I just found out it's coming to DC January 23rd at Landmark's E Street Theater, (which is just opening up this month, 555 11th Street NW, DC). I plan on going early, if anyone's interested in going post here. I'll probably even talk to the boys about some sort of event around it.
Based on the Bram Stoker Award nominee short story by acclaimed author Joe R. Lansdale, Bubba Ho-tep tells the "true" story of what really did become of Elvis.
We find the King (Bruce Campbell) as an elderly resident in an East Texas rest home, who switched identities with an Elvis impersonator years before his "death", then missed his chance to switch back. Elvis teams up with Jack (Ossie Davis), a fellow nursing home resident who thinks that he is actually President John F. Kennedy, and the two valiant old codgers sally forth to battle an evil Egyptian entity who has chosen their long-term care facility as his happy hunting grounds.

Hey all!
BUBBA HO-TEP opens in DC this next week! I'm not sure if it's just at the one theatre, but it will be part of the new "Landmark Theatres" opening on E Street in downtown DC (near the MCI Center).
And, on Friday when it opens, Bruce Campbell will be there!

Holy batshit Robin! He's right, they bumped it up. The theater's opening day, Friday, January 9th, Bruce Campbell will be there, (schedule permitting). It doesn't give a time though. I'll try and find out.

Sweaty News Update: I mentioned this thing to Ron this weekend and suggested they book him for an interview. He just told me they booked Bruce Campbell for a phone interview on Thursday's show. So, besides that being a good thing, we should find out then what time he'll be there Friday since I can't seem to find out online.

The Sunday Source in the Washington Post made it sound like he was going to be there for all their shows on Friday.
I've met Campbell once - very, very funny. Always makes the people he meet, especially fans, seem personal to him. He should give a great interview - if they take calls, I just might!
Reggie Bannister, who is also in it (and also stars in the PHANTASM movies) is a great, great guy.
Since no one here made any public plans about going to the flick, I'm going Saturday with some friends.
Can't wait!

If anyone's still interested I'm going to the theater around 4:30, but I think I'm going to see "The Battle of Algiers" afterwards. I'll keep my eyes peeled for familiar faces.

Sorry to bump such an old thread, but can anyone tell me what happened at the end? Roughly right after the mummy killed JFK and then Elvis and "Bubba" rolled down the hill.
Damn guide for MonstersHD was not adjusted properly and when I recorded it, it started about 15 minutes later than it was supposed to. Needless to say I missed the end and apparently it was the last showing.

Sorry to bump such an old thread, but can anyone tell me what happened at the end? Roughly right after the mummy killed JFK and then Elvis and "Bubba" rolled down the hill.

Eventually, Elvis and Jack face off against a re-animated ancient Egyptian mummy that was stolen during a US museum tour and then lost during a severe storm in East Texas when the bus being driven by the thieves veers off the road and into a river near the nursing home. The mummy strangely takes on the garb of a cowboy and is dubbed Bubba Ho-tep by Elvis who is given a telepathic flashback of the mummy's life and death when he looks into its eyes following its murder of an elderly woman at the home. The slow, plodding mummy is a real and credible threat, as instead of going against young adults who could potentially outrun it, the mummy gives chase to the elderly heroes who lack mobility and need a motorized wheelchair and a walker to get around the grounds.
After hatching an elaborate plan Elvis and Jack manage to destroy the mummy, and the trapped souls of their dead friends appear to be released to their final resting place. In the process of defeating the mummy, Elvis and Jack are themselves mortally wounded. Since much of the film establishes the protagonists as pathetic and even insane, their deaths are portrayed as especially heroic and honorable. As he lies near the river dying, Elvis gets confirmation that his soul is prepared to move on as he looks up into the stars and sees the message "ALL IS WELL" spelled out in Egyptian hieroglyphs; his final words are classic Elvis: "thank you, thank you very much." With that, he dies.
