i've been wondering this for some time, do people really consider Bonzo to be the greatest drummer. i've been listening to Zeppelin a lot in the past few days, and its just reinforced me opinion that he is not the drummer that everyone gives him the credit of being.
Now, i'm not going to sit here and say that he's bad, by no stretch of the imagination is he bad, but i don't believe that he's the best, i've seen better. There's some really good drummers, Max Roach for one, that are better than he was. i even have to say that Keith Moon was better than Bonham.
i know theres a lot of other good drummers from other styles that are better, and if you know of any, share them. If you have the opinion that Bonzo really has been the best, than explain to me why. Its not as though i haven't heard much from them, i used to know a kid that was OBSESSED with them, so i've heard all kinds of bootlegs, solos, unreleased stuff.

I do like Bonham, but I like the following better
Keith Moon (The WHO)
Neil Peart (RUSH)
Phil Collins/Chester Thompson (great on their own, but phenominal together in GENESIS)
Eric Carr (The late, greatest of the 3 KISS drummers)
Alan White (always preferred him over Bill Bruford in YES)
Nicko McBrain (IRON MAIDEN)
Charlie Benante (ANTHRAX)
Scott Rockenfield (QUEENSRYCHE)
And last, but not least, my Brother-In-Law, who's excellent, and was a contender for the vacant spot in SLAYER a couple of years ago before Dave Lombardo decided to come back permanently.
Really!

Close between Kieth Moon and Mitch Mitchell, but I give it to Mitchell for having nearly the power of Moon but also the diversity of skills to keep up with and build off of Hendrix.

Mitch Mitchell, thats the name i was thinking of, i couldn't remember it before. But from the obsessed kid, years ago, i remember he had told me the Hendrix had originally wanted Bonham, and when he couldn't get him, took Mitchell. i never understood that, if it is true, because i always thought that Mitchell had more in him than Bonham.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
Saying Peart is better than Bonzo is tantamount to saying Yngwie Malmsteen is better than Jimi Hendrix.
Now, for my money, if you want a compromise between guitar and drumming, I'll offer up my hero:

I saw Mascis earlier this year at The Black Cat in DC. He was playing with this shitty pseudo-garage band called Cobra Verde. The only thing they had going for them was Mascis and a bitchin' cover of the Undertones' "Teenage Kicks".
Anyway, Cobra Verde was opening up for Evan Dando. This was Dando on his last tour after finally sobering/cleaning up. And lo and behold, Julianna Hatfield was back playing with him that night.
So I saw Mascis, Hatfield and Dando in one night. It was like the "Night of Too Many Fallen 90's Alterna-Stars."
As for drummers, everyone is naming the classics, so I'll name my favorites today...
-Conrad Keely & Jason Reece of ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead (They altternate as lead singer/guitarist or drummer, and both kick your ass in the BALLS).
-Brendan Canty of Fugazi (I maintain that he and bassist Joe Lally are THE best rhythm section in rock today, PERIOD).
-Joe Easley (Drummer for the recently-departed The Dismemberment Plan. Anyone who has seen or heard these guys know how dynamic this guy is. Can play ANYTHING and ANYWAY at the drop of a hat).
-Jimmy Chamberlian of The Smashing Pumpkins and Zwan (The man is a beast behind the kit. But in a beautiful way).
-Nick Jago of BRMC (Deceptively simple, but the guy fires out backbeats that are like bullets through the back of your skull. Monstrously powerful).
-Phil Selway of Radiohead (Obvious band, but the guy's variety and ability to adapt to whatever is thrown at him by the insane singer and guitarist is nothing short of spectacular. Just compare something like "Paranoid Android" or "Just" to "Pyrmaid Song" or "Exit Music For a Film". Stunning range).
But my guilty pleasure for best crossover drummer is below...
http://www.seandooley.com/images/music/sd101b-27-bobby-gillespie.jpg
Bobby Gillespie. Not a particularly great drummer, but he drummed in The Jesus & Mary Chain and now he's the frontman for Primal Scream, and that's unspeakably cool.

Alex Van Halen rules. Too bad he's stuck with his lame brother (well, the first 10-15 years of the band weren't lame, but now Eddie's sick as a dog. Alex needs to join Foo Fighters or something)

Man, that's a lot of drums!
The picture above is the reason I like Van Halen. Eddie and all the singers can kiss my ass!
Alex and Michael Anthony ROCK!

Being loud and showy doesn't make one a great drummer.
Neither does having a big kit.
Perhaps the greatest jazz drummer, Max Roach, could show up to a gig with just a snare drum and high hat and get more sounds out of them than you can imagine.
Drum solos are boring and all sound the same.
I remember seeing Led Zep at the fuckin' Capital Centre and the sight of everyone getting up and leaving during "Moby Dick", which wasted an hour or so.
The drums are a rhythm instrument, and the best drummers are able to keep that beat going and propel the song forward.
You wanna hear some great drumming? Listen to some of those old Motown songs by Smokey, 4 Tops, Tempts, Stevie, etc.
The drummer is often slightly off time and the effect gives the song a sort of push-pull.
Check out "Love and Happiness" by Al Green for some great drumming, the way it oughta be done.

Death Metal Moe

I admire a bunch of Metal drummers that none of you would know, so I will spare you the long list.
Bonham is one of the best, butnot my favorite. Ward from Sabbath is great. I don't want to get the rivary between the 2 bands going either. I just like Sabbath better, personally.
But one of my favorite drummers you would all know is Stewart Copeland of The Police. Amazing attack and some of the most interesting time signatures I've heard in commercial music.
http://www.shure.com/artists/images/copeland_stewart1.jpg
And to be honest, the life of a drummer can be hard. Because some of the best ones blend in with the music so well you hardly notice them. We're all talking about the flashy drummers mostly, but don't forget the tallented men and women who add flair and strengh to a band while hanging in the background behind a strong frontman or flashy guitar guy. They're back there keeping the beat, adding flair here and there. Not the position for the Glory Hound, but just as important a job as any other part of the band.

Here are some I enjoy that I don't think have been mentioned:
Elvin Jones
Ziggy Modeliste
Al Jackson
Benny Benjamin
Jim Keltner
My favorite drummer is probably Levon Helm - innovative, yet very economical.

Cant remember all that were mentioned, but I dig
Simon Phillips [Jeff Beck, Who, sessions...]
Rod Morgenstein [Steve Morse, etc.]
Pat Mastellatto
Terry Bozzio [Zappa, UK, Missing Persons...]
Mike Portnoy [Dream Theatre, Liquid Tension Experiment]
Billy Cobham
and any list for me must include;
neil peart
buddy rich
louis bellson
and bonham
You have to put Bonham, and Zep, in the context of the time. People who might think of Zep as hard rock or metal really haven't listened to the first three albums; perhaps one third acoustic songs, one third straight blues, and one third rock.
For me it was Bonham's versatility. First, he knew when a song didn;t need drums. Hence the awesomeness of Zeps acoustic stuff. Second, the sound he got has been copped and sampled so often that it's ubiquitous.
Like others says; any fool drummer can play fast, but the groove in Kashmir, that 'simple' groove, makes what might have been a boring, droning song the Monster that it is.
And he had the chops. Listen to the shuffle beat in "No Quarter" or "Fool in the Rain." Sweet! Works one kick better then some work two.
The Best? There's no best. Jerry Garcia is Eddie is Jimi is Eric is Yngwie is Pete in guitars. It's apples and battleships.
