Oh Boy! This is gonna be great! A six + hour teleplay version of a six + hour Broadway play written by a gay commie! And its about gay guys dying of AIDS! And other gay guys not dying of AIDS, quite yet! And its got Mormons! (Gay and straight). And it features the two top icons of today's pop culture: Roy Cohn and Ethel Rosenberg!!! And its got Angels!! And a whole bunch of other stuff!!!! Who's up for watching it on the big screen at my place?

Umm, did I mention one of the angels had multiple coochies?

Seriously, this thing could be great. I've read it several times and I saw the second half of this play on Broadway about ten years ago (Fuck, where is my life going? but I digress.) and it was an amazing piece of work. It was a real spectacle and the use of language was amazing. (If there is one common thing we probably share as R&F fans, it is an appreciation for twisting the language in unusual and entertaining ways.) You may not like the politics, (typical downtown NY Lefty), but if you have access to HBO this Sunday and next, give it a chance and I suspect at least some of you will be impressed. And if you're not, I'll buy you a drink or a videogame ticket or something at the Xmas party.

That is all.

I read of this quite a bit and pray it honors what sounds like an amazing series of stage pieces.

The history of the HIV Virus; and the social setting of the time, for me, defined that century. As it is now quietly defining this century; amid the din of man-made horrors. It defined how we, as a species, a world, and country, and a culture, could be simultaneously So smart and So naive. It is What We Were. And it was Not pretty.

A horrific, sad, unfolding: never has science so utterly failed, never has the medical community so utterly failed, the doctors, the lawyers, the americans at the cdc, the pasteur institute, the AMA, the blood banks, the politicians [oh! the silence!].

Never has a people misunderstood something with such naivete and utter disregard for What was happening. Except perhaps for Right Now.

The house was on fire. And is.

And we watched quietly. And do.

what a terrifying quiet.

I saw the first half of it when it came through Washington, but not the second part. While I remember it being amazing, I don't remember any specifics, except the angel at the end.

A review of the HBO series already ran in The Washington Post last weekend:

Tom Shales review (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A19360-2003Nov28.html)

Sounds like a pretty decent production - six hours is a lot, though.

I just saw a preview and it looked weird to me. I don't think I would sit through it.

I don't know if topping your own thread is bad form, but if Ms. Fuzzybutt wants a discussion on this movie
Under Lock & Key (http://www.ronfez.net/messageboard/viewmessages.cfm/Forum/80/Topic/34660/page/Angels_in_America_thread.htm)
a discussion she will have.

I thought the movie lived up to the hype, which is saying a lot. It seems like all the sharpness of the dialogue was intact; all the acting was first-rate and, maybe because the current political zeitgeist is pretty similar to the eighties, it didn't really feel dated like I feared. Two minor quibbles: The multi-role aspect for the actors seemed a bit gimmicky (although Meryl Streep as the rabbi was good) and I could have lived without the squishy sound effects when the guy was getting buggered in the park.
All in all, one of the top ten things I've seen on TV.

Part Two gets a lot more metaphysical (questions like What the fuck is God up to?) but it should be great.

Bonus Points: The pickup line "You must be an angel 'cuz look at the hard-on you gave me!" might actually work with literary chicks. :)

On the other hand, it might not.

Sorry, I was gone from the board for a few days when I posted that.

I watched it on Sunday and I even admit to watching it again as part of a mini series.

I never saw the play, but I am very impressed with what I've seen. Whenever I watch a scene, I can't help but wonder how it was depicted on the stage.

And Mike Nichols should be applauded for digitally recreating the World Trade Center in the scene when Harper is on the roof of her building. It kind of makes me laugh when I see modern day SUVs and even modern cabs in a scene. The geek in me wants to yell, "GOOF!!!" Like a 2001 Ford Explorer is going to take away from the film?

The Roy Cohn/Ethel Rosenberg scenes are classic. Meryl Streep is so deadpan. And I had no idea she was the Rabbi at Lou's grandmother's funeral!

I'm SO getting this when/if it comes out on DVD.

There! I had my say!

I felt the movie had some great segments, but couldn't find it's ending.

Kushner often suffers from the same malady that most of us who enjoy writing do: knowing when to put down the pen.

Trim about 45 minutes or so from it, and you'd have a top quality production.
