View Full Version : What Do You REALLY Want for Christmas???

I was thinking about this over the weekend. My mother had asked me what I wanted and I gave her the standard answer...Nothing!! I really don't need anything. I had wanted an mp3 player but I went out and got the one I wanted. I needed some tires for my car so I went out and bought them. So I started thinking!! I'm going to ask my Mom and any others who might want to give me a gift for Christmas (the list is small) to donate the cost of the gift to the American Cancer Society. You see, I lost my wife to uterine cancer 4 years ago and I think that's the best thing that I could do in her memory.
Anybody have any ideas what they would like from Santa???

I want a feast
I want a bean feast
Cream buns and doughnuts and fruitcake with no nuts so good you could go nuts.
No, now!
I want a ball
I want a party
Pink macaroons and a million balloons and performing baboons and
Give it to me now.
I want the world,
I want the whole world.
I want to lock it all up in my pocket
It's my bar of chocolate
Give it to me now!
I want today
I want tomorrow
I want to wear them like braids in my hair and I don't want to share them
I want a party with roomfuls of laughter
Ten thousand ton of ice cream
And if I don't get the things I am after
I'm going to scream!
I want the works,
I want the whole works!
Presents and prizes and sweets and surprises in all shapes and sizes,
And now!
Don't care how I want it now!
Don't care how I want it now!

That's damn decent of you, reesh.

I have an uncle like that. He and his wife and two young sons haven't exchanged gifts for over three Christmases(sp?) now. They all just go out shopping and buy gifts for needy people that they each "sponsor" through a local "help the poor" charity. They actually personally then give the people their gifts on Xmas Eve and spend the day with them, making them dinner and such. It's a very cool gesture.

I haven't TOTALLY weaned myself off of gift-giving-getting, but I really don't like getting more than what I actually need. I usually ask for one or two practical gifts and that's it. I've also always donated at least $150 to a decent reputable charity for the last two years, and it gives me a better feeling than any gift I didn't really need ever could.

Reeshy, that's a wonderful and noble thing you did. I give generously to the The American Cancer Society. (http://www.cancer.org/docroot/home/index.asp) I lost my dad to cancer 15 years ago.

Just for that, there's an extra check in the mail for them! :)

reeshy that is great.

One thing I have noticed is that the many of the companies that used to send me gifts now send cards that wish me Season's Greetings and then say that they have made a donation to a particular charity instead of sending a gift. Works for me, (and them, they get a tax credit I imagine) and certainly I prefer the money to go to a worthy cause and not a bottle of scotch. I usually give the gifts I still receive to those people I work with who I know could use them more than me anyway.

The really cool "holiday donation in lieu of gift cards" even include a list of various charities and then you check off which one you want your donation to go to.

Wasn't the card saying 'I donated to a charity in lieu of giving you a gift' a George Costanza move?

A company I used to work for told the employees one year that in place of the usual office holiday party they were making a charitable donation on the firm's behalf. The thing is they had a fancy 'executive committee only' party anyway on a yaht they hired to circle nyc. Worse, the secretaries had to send invites to the "important clients". It made the staff feel like shit and I'm sure tax write offs don't trickle down.

i want stuff for myself. charity begins at home. Just like when castanza gave donations to the "human fund".
I dont give charity. How does buying someone ELSE a gift who i dont know, get ME anything?
anyway - this year my peeps know that i dont care so much what it is, as long as i get to open presents. Ill take scarfs, sweaters, books, CDs, DVDs, shirts, gadgets, doesnt matter...as long as its NOT " in lieu of a real gift i donated money,,etc,,etc,,

i know i cant be the only person who looks out for number 1, maybe just the only one who admits it.

oh and for all you generous donaters..id love to see the receipt cause ..here in cyber space..we can ALL donate 10 grand a year to starving children - and who would doubt us?
