This is a relatively new ice cream chain - they have a store on 42nd Street and it's always packed. I was there once, it was pretty good, but every time I went back, it was just too crowded. You might want to check this place out.

Check out this article. (http://www.time.com/time/insidebiz/article/0,9171,1101030811-472860,00.html)

Its awesome! The women go crazy for it too, so its a good idea for a date. The ones that are near me (2) have guys that sing as they are making the icecream, and they also make their own cones and stuff, so it is super yummy smelling when you go in. Its expensive, so be prepaired, but its worth it for the atmosphere.

You DC folks will recognize a comparison to Maggie Moo's.

Cold Stone is really tasty ice cream- the last time I was there (the 42nd St. shop) I had the cake-batter ice cream with cherries. Yum.
And now, they're opening a shop here in my neighborhood on 85th and 2nd. and one in my old home town of Deer Park. Nice! (Although, I can't imagine December is the best month for opening an ice-cream parlor...)

Thats the weird paradox, ice cream stores almost always do better business in the winter than the summer for some reason. And as for me, Id tend to stay away from such places and would rather go someplace with less of a crowd, but the place is a babe magnet!
The countertop that they do the ice cream mixing on is a slab of super cooled granite and the ice cream itself is kinda soft looking, they mix whatever ingredients you want in it and you can hear it sizzling from the cold as they mash it up and mix it together with spatulas. Its like an ice cream Benihana.

Maybe Herrells? I remember an ice cream place in the riverside Square mall, but I don't recall it having smoosh-ins.

In either case. Steve Herrell is the guy that started this trend in 1973; he opened an ice cream store called Steves with the cold stone counter and called the candy etc you could mix in "smoosh ins". It was in Somerville (I'm pretty sure the Chairman can tell you more about Somerville and Steve Herrell's greek ties, if I recall correctly), althoughI remember going to Steve's ice cream in Harvard Square in the late 70's with my dad. They had a player piano, but it would also spit out song titles, and if you happened to be able to play the song that it spit out, you got free ice cream, or sometihng to that effect.

Anyway, you may have heard of Bertucci's pizza; the original Bertucci's (I think) was right next to the original Steve's ice cream. The guy that opened Bertucci's bought Steve Herrell's chain of ice cream shops (Steve's) and like totally way expanded it. I think there are even Steve's ice creams in NYC now. Steve sold out because he thought good ice cream was just a fad (I guess he didn't see Ben and Jerry coming).

Clearly it wasn't just a fad, so Steve got back into the ice cream business, but since the name "Steve" was already being used, he called his new shop "Herrells". They still do smoosh-ins and have kick ass ice cream. I much prefer it to Ben and Jerry's; they always have the best flavors, although my favorite is still the simplest one - "Sweet Cream".

So although that was probably more than you wanted to know about Steve Herrell, the upshot of my story is that Cold Stones are copy cats and that Boston has a way better ice cream atmoshere (Steves, Herrell's and Toscanini's?! Hoe can you go wrong???) than NYC does. That said, I haven't tried cold stones so I don't know if they know about Steve's 14% butterfat rule and/or have good ice cream.

Farrell's Ice Cream
