Hundreds of high schoool/teen movies are produced a year and very often they are based in reality as much as Lord of the Rings. Only 1% of such movies have the slightest bit of realism in them and often those movies are satires and mostly offbeat. The last one I really remember was Election. Today I saw Ghost World and that movie has a place among the few realistic teen movies.

Very rarely will I call a movie brilliant. There was only movie I considered brilliant so far this year- Memento. Ghost World is the second and it might very well be my favorite movie so far this year. It was just so...fantastic.

Thora Birch's character is among my top 10 perfect women (in look and personality). It's great to see Steve Buscemi back again. David Cross even puts in a small cameo. And for those a fan of the director's last film- yes, there are a little R. Crumb references put in there.

It's playing in very few theaters. Summer Catch will make more in its first weekend than this movie will ever make. But if you can see it, do it.

i am a huge daniel clowes fan and i was super excited when i found out that ghost world was made into a movie. for those who don't know, "ghost world" first appeared in dan clowes' "eightball" comic (which i recommend, by the way, because every issue is totally twisted and wacky and just too funny!)

i've seen ghost world twice already. it's not one of the best movies i've seen this year thus far, but i would have to say that is is one of the most impressive movies i've seen this summer. it's the only movie that had characters which i could actually relate to (and it was actually scary, because in a way i was or still am like enid and rebecca). i guess you can call it a teen drama, but it's really like no other teen drama that has come out this summer, or even this year.

the movie starts out with enid (thora birch, who i'm totally in love with) and rebecca (scarletter johansson, who was in the horse whisperer--she's an awesome actress). they are best friends and they are outsiders who don't seem to fit in anywhere. they have just graduated high schoool and instead of going to college, they decide on getting jobs and eventually an apartment together. as the summer progresses their plans seem to crumble more and more as enid begins to doubt whether she really does want to move in with rebecca, and enid's unexpected relationship with seymour (steve buscemi, who i have always loved!), an alienated "loser" who's only hobby is collecting records, makes them grow apart.

and i agree with ikeaboy...GO SEE THIS FILM! you won't regret it. i swear it will make you laugh. this movie is filled with such wacky characters, i swear they won't leave your head for a longtime.

the only thing that disappointed me is that in the movie, enid and seymour's relationship seemed to be the main focus of the film, whereas in the actual comic, enid and rebecca's relationship is the main focus (in "ghost world" the graphic novel, seymour only appeared on three pages. his character was not that important). also, josh's character was barely noticeable in the movie, whereas in the comic, josh had a bigger role.

anyway, go see this film! it might not be the best film you've ever seen but i bet you'll be able to relate to in in some way. it's also extremely funny...the pranks and commentary enid and rebecca pull on people are right on! this movie rocks.
