View Full Version : Albums that could benefit from "Naked" treatment"

The Beatles "Let It Be" was recently released, as "Let It Be -- Naked", in a more stripped down form, removing much of the Phil Spector production. Public opnion has beed decidedly mixed. It does show, at least, how important production can be and what a difference production can make. Different ideas in production can make the difference between a release being a timeless classic and a dated curio.
My question is this -- are there any albums out there that would benefit from getting the "Naked" treatment?
I have one. Lone Justice - "Shelter" For those not familiar, Lone Justice was an (L.A. -- I think) band that came to semi-prominence in the mid-80s. They were a pop-rock band with a decidedly country influence. (They were alt-country when alt-country wasn't cool, or at least didn't exist), A major push from their record company got them the opening slot on U2's "Unforgettable Fire" tour and their video for "Ways to Be Wicked" off of their first album got some airplay. I'm guessing that the record company was less than impressed by the first record's sales, because their second album, "Shelter" got a glossy and ill-fitting 80s production. Listening now, the production is such that it makes the album almost unlistenable. It's a shame, because the songs contained are pretty decent and could definitely have benefited from a more spare approach in the studio.
Any other ones out there?

Although it's a great album as is, I always wanted to hear Astral Weeks as it was originally recorded - just Van and his acoustic guitar. However, I don't recommend "Van Morrison...naked" as a marketing hook.
That eighties style production you speak of (gated reverb on drums, extraneous synths, washed-out vocals) was a real menace. I think they recorded every eighties album on a raquetball court in a coked-out haze.
For me, Steve Lillywhite was one of the worst proponents of this school. Marshall Crenshaw's second album Field Day has great songs, but laughably overblown production.

How about "Metallica: And Justice for All... Redressed"
That album has some great songs on it, but the production sounds horrible. Drums sound like cardboard.

Kiss- Hotter than Hell
Iggy and the Stooges- Raw Power
2 great albums that were recorded terribly. Even being remastered didn't help these.

Al Yankovic- "Poodle Hat." Phil Spector overproduced the album with lots of strings and- wait, wait, sorry, Mikey. I was thinking of "Let It Be," too.

Anything by Britney Spears. That way her voice won't be covered up by the music and the world can see what a marginal talent she is.

getting nirvana's nevermind free of that andy wallace mix would be first on my list .....
there are at least three versions of the stooges' raw power: the bowie mix, the great liberated bootleg with a small picture of bowie with a red slash going across his face and then the remastered version from the last few years .....
i'd also like a less 80s produced versions of the 'mats 'please to meet me' and elvis' spike .....
