Why do bad things happen to Jared Leto?

I can't say that I'm familiar with Jared Leto's entire canon of work, but it occurs to me that in every movie I've seen him in, something horrific happens to him.

Fight Club - gets disfigured by a beating from Ed Norton
Panic Room - gets his face burned and gets shot
Requiem for a Dream - due to the ravages of drug addiction, gets arm amputated
Prefontaine - dead (I'm cheating on this one because I haven't seen it, but I know he plays the part of a real life runner who suffers a tragic death)

He's also in a couple of movies that I haven't seen -- American Psycho and Urban Legend -- where it's better than even odds that he ends up dead.

What gives? Does he seek out these roles, or do casting directors and directors like to do horrible things to him?
