My High School made National News Today

I'd have a link to provide to the story but I can't find it. Today for most of our classes we talked about a situation that brought our school to national attention.

While teaching Catcher in the Rye, student's laughed when the word Fuck appeared. The teacher, trying to prove a point told them to say the world 1,000 times to themselves to get over it and grow up. This story got spun into he forced them to go home and say it to family and friends or they would recieve and F for this "assignment."

The news jumped on it, and it was on local and national news this morning, and will probably be on more tonite. Although the parents of the student have already written the school saying they support the teacher and his teaching method, and in fact they like him and know it was only a joke. The story has become something it is not.

My question, who the fuck cares if a book says fuck. It's a part of our common language and it really is not that big a deal. If a student feels a book is too offensive to read, then he or she can opt it out. I knew a student who skipped Catcher in the Rye and they didn't throw a fit when we read it in class aloud.

None of my (many) High Schools ever made national news when I went there (although Edison did have a "race riot" in the 1980s at a time when I would have gone had I stayed in that area), but my college made news in the 1990s when a satirical article written by a friend in the school newspaper pissed the Dean off so much he thought about cancelling the paper all together. When it hit USA Today, it made him look really stupid.

OH! Also, my college made the Weekly World News when guy cut off his hand because he saw the sign of the beast in it. What was freaky was that the Weekly World News didn't embellish anything - made me start to wonder what the hell else is in the paper that's real? Bat Boy? The Fat Cat? Hmmmm...

Anyway, what the FUCK was that teacher thinking doing something like that these days???

Reminds me of an episode of MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE where Malcom says "Fuck you" to his Dad (bleeped of course). As "punishment" the Dad makes him go through a list of every possible dirty insult and say it to his face - sort of like punishing a kid for smoking by making him smoke 50 cigarettes.

These days, what's the real difference between using "fucking," "f-ing," "friggin," "flipping," or even just saying "The F Word." People know what they all mean and stand for - weird rules.

been there, tried that. The last book i read for class i found offensive because it was a romance novel and the book i'm reading now i find offensive because it has something to do with religion. The teacher will honestly ive you a choice, sometimes, "Read the book, or fail the class." Now i wish i could opt out of books in school, but it would just make complete anarchy due to the fact that it goes against their precious curriculum.

He did not force the kids to say it. It was a sarcastic remark that was meant to prove a point, it was never meant to be an actual assignment. This kid lied and the story has spun into something it is not.
