as much as i think dave matthews band stuff belongs most appropriately in the garbage, it doesn't really stike me as being elevator-friendly.
on a somewhat related sidenote, i remember hearing freedy johnston (who i really like) played over the PA in bed, bath, and beyond. that really bothered me.

if memory serves (with a little urban legend) -- back in the early days of the seattle scene, the main 'elevator music' company was staffed by future rock stars who would compose safe. airy versions of sub pop and k records classics .....

I don't know if this is true. I tend to think not. However, there was a CD of elevator versions of grunge hits by Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, etc. that was quite the rage in the early 90s, but that was more of a tongue-in-cheek novelty record.
