Why don't history school books go into detail about the draft riots in new york during the civil war? It was one of the worst things in America. I saw a documentry about it, where everyone was just fighting eachother. Why isn't that taught? Its part of history, and good or bad it should be talked about.

We learned about it today, but only because my teacher, whos a student teacher, is a big civil war buff and thought we should get the whole picture about the status of the country.

Because it happened in the North, the North that was supposed to be a fabulous, wonderful haven for Blacks, as opposed to that awful, wicked South, where even though most didn't own slaves, every person in the region is said to have owned some...We also don't teach about the first slave ships being built in Massachusetts, the Rum/Slave trade that made so many in Yankeedom rich that the English darn near started the American Revolution years before the Real one when they threatened to tax it...Nah...we don't need to learn about that stuff....

If you haven't learned yet the Victors write the history...its time you did...

Please. If most of the war was fought on your soil, with most of its effects on your people(ie homes destroyed, property stolen, towns sacked) I bet it would take you a long time to get over it to. Besides, in Yugoslavia, the Serbs are still pissed they lost to the Muslims at Kosovo in 1300(St. Vitus Day), and it cost Archduke Ferdinand his life in 1914

Because school textbooks provide a survey of general U.S. history. A topic such as the draft riots would get a blurb but anything other than that would require further research. Thus the ever cheesy "Further Reading" form of a bibliography. I prefer footnotes and a detailed bibliography.

This is what you don't get, people on the message board take topics in all sorts of directions. Don't get your panties in a bunch because things aren't going the way you wanted it to.

As to why draft riots aren't taught.

Teachers don't have time to teach every little thing about history. In high school all you get is a broad overview of the things that happened. When and if you get to college, and when and if you make it to the higher level classes, the college professors will show you a more in depth version of events. Also, if you want to know more about history, get a library card and start reading.

The other thing you need to realize is that teachers are just people who sometimes show you a biased view of history based on their own lives and their own experiences. The point of this is to never believe everything you hear.

But, perhaps the answer you want to hear is that the government doesn't want you to know about it and they give the school money so the school bows down to the pressure.

I guess it depends on your life and your experiences which one you choose to believe.

I don't think that the socialist movement in this country was stressed nearly as much when I was learning about the 1910's, but that's the breaks. If I become a teacher it'll be a socialist-fest. Plus I know that 11th grade American history was crammed into so little space that the 1970's-present was taught in the 10 days of June that I had school. The New York riots aren't nearly as important as things that happened in that time, so i didn't learn about them.


And stop jumping all over Keith about using generalities. You guys do it just as fucking much. I mean really, bash him because of his sentiments at least, not because of the way he says it. Most of what he says is a minority opinion, but so is most of what I say. Somehow I haven't gotten nearly as much flack for using generalities and i've been an active poster here for a year. I still don't know how what he said about "teh South" is a bad thing.

New York also may have burned to the ground when Confederate spies snuck in there and tried to burn it down in '64 I believe, but they used this crap called "Greek Fire" that didn't work and the only thing they really burned down was something owned by PT Barnum

Basically, there's really not that much to say about it. The Irish got pissed at the draft laws and the Emancipation Proclamation, which was going to send them to war to die for people they didn't want to die for, and they just went around killing every black person they could find..thats about the jist of it...It goes into the general topic of waning support for the war in the North as it dragged on and on...It got so bad that like I said before, If Sherman hadn't taken the ATL when he did, Lincoln would have lost the election, and Mojo would be a descendant of a president...

Actually Mojo, the Election of McClellan maybe would have destroyed the Democratic Party. Lincoln himself said they would have to put out a war candidate on a peace platform or a peace candidate on a war platform, and I think personally the liberal wing and conservative wings of the party would have completely split up...permanently. Their split among northern and southern Dems in 60 was what got Lincoln elected...
