I thought the rule was that if in the last minute the offense commits a penalty while the clock is running that the penalty and a 10 second runoff would result. But yesterday that did not happen.

During the Seahawk/Ravens game the score was 41-38 and the Ravens had the ball with :23 seconds left. They called a run play which went 7 yards...the QB ran up to the line and spiked the ball...the refs called an illegal formation. This happened with 4 seconds left. Why didn't they run the clock 10 seconds and end the game? Instead they pushed them back 5 yards and they had enough time to kick a tying field goal and eventually the game winner. Maybe I just don't understand the rule.

Straight from NFL.com...

Timing in Final Two Minutes of Each Half

1. On kickoff, clock does not start until the ball has been legally touched by player of either team in the field of play. (In all other cases, clock starts with kickoff.)

2. A team cannot buy an excess time out for a penalty. However, a fourth time out is allowed without penalty for an injured player, who must be removed immediately. A fifth time out or more is allowed for an injury and a five-yard penalty is assessed if the clock was running. Additionally, if the clock was running and the score is tied or the team in possession is losing, the ball cannot be put in play for at least 10 seconds on the fourth or more time out. The half or game can end while those 10 seconds are run off on the clock.

3. If the defensive team is behind in the score and commits a foul when it has no time outs left in the final 40 seconds of either half, the offensive team can decline the penalty for the foul and have the time on the clock expire.

4. Fouls that occur in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter as well as the last two minutes of the first half will result in the clock starting on the snap.

If the Ravens had a time out left, they can take the time out in which case they will not run 10 seconds off the clock since the clock is stopped.

Or the 4 seconds was left on the clock after they ran off 10 seconds. Sometimes the guys running the clock on the television change the times really fast and maybe you just didn't notice it.

Or everyone fucked up and you're the only one who noticed.

It looks like the league admitted that the officials fucked up.

that was completely different. The Seahawks were called for a penalty with like a minute left, and then the flag was withdrawn, so the clock should've kept running but it didn't. So that gave the Ravens 40 more seconds for that last drive. Thankfully the officials screwed up and MY RAVENS WIN!!!
