Lizzle of the Rizzle: The Retizzle of the Kizzle.
Can't wait. Watched the 4 disc The Two Towers over the weekend. I can't imagine why the tickets for Trilogy Tueday are going for so much on eBay ($500 I hear) when you can own the First Two films for less on DVD and you would be awake to see the new third film. (and not have to smell other fans who have been sitting there for 8 hours of film and who knows how long in line to get it!)

The extra scenes in Two Towers really add to the story. So much more than the extra scenes in Fellowship. I love the extended versions. Can't wait to see the new one, although I don't think I would be able to do that marathon of all three movies at once in a theater.

My dress is 90% finished, I made boots to go with it, and now I just need vambraces. I was also the very first (!!) to pay for my tickets online for the special screening on 12/16 so I get to be first in line... as if I wouldn't have won the costume contest and been first in line anyway.

Ok, now I am not trying to break balls here and I have never even come close to seeing a LOTR film cause I just don't understand but why was there one after another after another in a three year span kind of like the Harry Potter deal also. Wouldn't it be more of a build up having a three year span in between films like Star Wars did back in the day. It seems to me like it wouldn't be as special of an event yearly as it would tri-yearly. Or is it all about the money and let's get as much as we can before people forget about it due to the short attention spans these days. Also, what is the deal with a two-disc set and THEN a four-disc set a few months later? Does the two-disc set get traded in after the four-disc comes out? Is there really that much footage out there that it all couldn't come out on one say five-disc set. It just seems like such a waste of cash and the kind of thing where the LOTR people are just frothing at the mouth at all of the money they are making. Help me understand cause this just really puzzles me.

In order to even be able to make the movie(s), the filmmakers and producers agreed they needed to roll from one film to the next, production wise (18 months total, I think?).
The whole thing cost about $300 million (I believe), or about $100 per film - which is a lot less than if they had filmed it - then filmed it again a few years later - and then filmed the third one a few years after that. The insurance alone, to cover one long production, had to have been a lot less than covering three different productions.
You also get to have the exact same people in front of and behind the camera - there's no stars holding out for the third film because they were big stars in the first, which IS what happened on the original STAR WARS trilogy, where the three principles demanded a lot more money for JEDI than they got for EMPIRE or the first STAR WARS.
They deserved the money, in my opinion, but JEDI (I also believe) they give their worst performances.
Anyway, what would have happened had one of the actors died in between making movies, like Richard Harris with HARRY POTTER, or "The Oracle" with THE MATRIX? It's a natural risk, and sure someone could have died during the massive production, however this kind of protects them further - you have the dream cast you want; just keep on filming all the way through.
Finally, the quality of the series is going to be consistant. If you loved the first one, and then the second one, you know for damn sure you're going to love the third, which is why all of the excitement.
(Same is true if you hated the first one - odds are you won't be a fan of the other two).
It does take him about a year of post-production to get the film assembled. There's rumblings that he DOES want to do THE HOBBIT, if he can get the rights worked out, and that should be awhile from now.
They're good films - worth seeing on the big screen.
As far as the 2 Disc set vs. 4 disc set - I kind of agree with you on that one. I guess the feeling was that the expanded version would have been too long to have in the theatres for most people, but they want to make that available to everyone - but the shorter one is the one people actually saw.
Most people seem to know the difference at this point, and it's really just part of the over all greed with Hollywood, where they constantly repackage their DVDs (SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, SIXTH SENSE, FAST AND THE FURIOUS all come to mind) and resell them again and again. I blame Lucas for this, as a Christmas didn't go by in the mid 1990s where he wasn't repackaging the original STAR WARS trilogy.

Thanks KOP for helping me to understand a little bit. I cvan understand the keeping together of the cast and I never knew that about Jedi either. I guess I am just naive and want to watch the movie and not see or hear about and of the extranneous shit going on behind the scenes. Yes the performances were bad but I still enjoyed the film.
I always jump to the conclusion that everything is always about money these days and not about quality of product. I am only familiar with Peter Jackson because of Bad Taste and I even knew he made these LOTR films and I had wanted to see them. Hell, even the close resemblance between the classic heavy metal I listen to which sings of goblins and swords and fighting and many other Tolkien themes kind of drew me towards it but I had always feared just wasting my time and losing three hours. I'll have to borrow these from my one friend and TRY and watch them one weekend. I jumped on late to other things before so I guess why not jump on board with this too.
Thanks again.

I still see people complain about the 4 disc sets, like they were fooled into buying the 2 disc set.
Your post sounds like you're just joking but I wanted to just say this about the DVDs:
Only 2 of the discs in the 4 disc sets contain the movie. It's a much longer version with better sound and slightly better video (30 mins longer for Fellowship of the ring, 43 for The Two Towers) plus 4 commentary tracks (I still have only listened to 2 on FOTR and 1 on TTT) The other 2 discs are INTENSE "making of" documentaries for SERIOUS FANS of Lord Of The Rings
Anyone get The Tenacious DVD? Disc 1 is "for Fans", Disc 2 is "for Psycho Fans only!" It's kinda like that for these DVDs: 2 disc for regular movie fans, 4 disc for people really into LOTR
The 2 disc set is the theatrical versions of the films (which are plenty long) the second disc is the regular fluffy kind of bonus material (trailers, HBO first looks, EPKs etc)
There is a rebate for people who buy both versions, they are designed to have none of the same material (except the scenes in the movies that appear in both versions, of course)
The books came out just months apart. The story is really one long story that would have come out as one huge book if paper didn't cost so much at the time the books were written (it would be priced so high people wouldn't buy it, so the publisher demanded the spilting of the books. Since that time, paper has gotten cheaper and you can buy Single Volume editions of the books. I have this one:<img src="http://members.cox.net/nicksporsche/imageload.jpeg"> it has Illustrations by Alan Lee who worked on the design of the films with John Howe both who have done LOTR artwork for years before the films) Since Lord of the Rings has been known to be 3 volumes, New Line thought it would make sense to make it 3 movies. Miramax (who originally agreed to make the movies,) planned on making it 2 movies.
Tolkien hated the Title "Return of the King" he thought it would confuse people into thinking Elvis was in it. Or that it was a spoiler, I forget which...

I am going on the assumption that it is not purely "greed" that has led to the 2 disc and 4 disc DVD sets. I assume a lot of people, like me, would like to have a theatrical AND/OR extended cut of the movie. Why they wait so long to release the theatrical cut of the movie on DVD, however, is beyond me. Seems to me that it would actually cut into EE DVD sales.

They wait so long to release the theatrical cut so that it lies between the two movies. That way, they can use the summer release to begin hype for the next December theatrical. They release the extended cut mid to late November so that it continues the hype for the theatrical release just weeks later and can be a X-Mas gift.
There is currently talks to release thetrical ROTK dvd in may 2004.

I love Jedi, and have grown to apprecieate it as I got older. The performance comments was really just my opinion, based on their performances in EMPIRE, which I thought were terrific.

BAD TASTE is fun, but I love DEAD ALIVE, and HEAVENLY CREATURES is maybe one of the more disturbing films I've seen

I know how you feel. There are about 10 movies either out or coming out in the next month, yet I've already committed myself to seeing the rerelease of the first two LOTR (expanded) AND the new one when it comes out - roughly 11 hours of my life this month will be spent watching Elves and Hobbits and Wizards! Eeesh.
Thankfully it's spread out over a few weeks - I don't think I have it in me to do all three in one fell swoop. Did that with MATRIX (the first 2 on video; third one that night in the theatre), now I hate all three movies!

People like me like to have at least 6 disc of DVD goodness for each movie that I love (I still need 4 more discs for Memento, Fight Club and the original Matrix, plus at least 3 disc each for Godfather Part I and II)
I don't think it would hurt DVD sales for the EE cut. if the Theatical editions are available (and put next to them in the stores) people who aren't really into LOTR won't buy them, they'll choose the cheaper 2 disc version. Plus there was a 3 month gap, that's a long time for retail.

So have I. Especially Lucas' directorial decisions. In the midst of all the crappy Ewok nonsense, you've got that great Luke/Vader conflict. I'm a total geek for when Vader turns on the Emperor and then later when he has Luke pull off the mask. We've all seen it a million times now, but I can remember the first time I saw it when I was five, and was TERRIFIED of what Vader would look like under that mask. I lived and breathed everything Star Wars as a little kid, but Darth Vader scared the shit out of me. To have him be such a pathetic, withered, little old man was such a blow the first time around.
Other than that, the movie stinks.

So how many people are going to sit in a theater for 13 hours. I don't know of that many theaters that are that comfortable.
Has anyone gone to the new Fairfax Corner 14 theater? They have a bar, sbarro's, nathans, Starbucks, and other stuff inside. One of the theaters has leather rocking seats with cup holders and I do believe you can buy assigned seats in one of the theaters.
Did anyone see the commercial tie in for LOTR. The official candy of LOTR is NERDS.

So it's finally here. As we speak people are sitting in theaters watching the extended version of Fellowship of the Ring (or maybe The Two Towers has just started) and will be seeing The Return of the King (along with a lot of people, including my self, seeing it later tonight at midnight) And TONS tomorrow throughout the weekend.
So, Aside from this Trilogy (which is a debatable term for the movies, since the story was originally written as one huge book, but since it's technically 3 separately releases movies, I'm calling it a trilogy) has there been another film trilogy that hasn't let people down?
Now NOT everyone will like Return of the King, but those people didn't like the first 2 movies, so that doesn't count. I'm talking Trilogies where people love the first, and maybe even the second (Star Wars, Terminator) but when that third on comes in people who were still there were pissed (Godfather, Superman, Revenge of the Jedi) Some didn't even make it through #2 (Matrix, Back to the Future)
Is there another trilogy that people think was totally well made?

I just want to come on here to say that I am sticking my fingers in my ears (ouch!), since we don't have tickets until the Friday 6:30 show at the legendary Uptown Theatre. Now that I am doing contract work, I can't afford to be taking time off during the week.
To piggy-back a discussion R&F had last night, I usually prefer to go to the big movies opening night, or opening day. Part of it is the geek factor, but also a good portion of it (and I should have called to make this point) is that if it's something I know I want to see, I don't want it to be ruined! For many of these, I don't want to hear any of the buzz (good or bad) - I want to experience it myself, not influenced at all by someone else's opinion.
That said...I'm not treading back into this thread until the coast is clear and I've seen the film.
