here a long list of new stuff to be added/changed on the original trilogy (http://www.theforce.net/holonet/index.shtml#22710)
Some of the changes are perfect :
<i>The original shooting scene between Han and Greedo has been restored.</i> Not really a change, just a change back to the way it was
Some are the kind of changes that I find acceptable:
<i>The lightsaber effects have been redone and the frame jumps of lightsabers being turned on has been removed.</i> if they just make the saber's look like they do in the newer films, that's cool. Just no CGI Obi-wan flying around
Some are just unnessessary and pointless:
<i>Temuera Morrison's voice is being recorded for the older Boba Fett and all the stormtroopers.</i>
Some will make people seek out Lucas and kill him:
<i>Sebastion Shaw who played Anakin when he was unmasked has been replaced with Hayden Christenson in make-up to make him look older. Anakin has much more dialogue. He apologizes for the destruction he caused, he thanks his son for turning him back to the light, he tells his son to rebuild the Jedi and he says he loves him and his sister. Just before he dies he says, "It is finished...".</i>

It's very simple what they need to do...do what Spielberg did with "ET" and release both versions of each of the movies with the set - the original, way it was when it was in the theatres, and then his crappy reinvisioned way.
Any other way and I will feel like I'm being set up again, where he will leave the door open to keep releasing these three movies again and again in different formats.
It's his fault for ruining continuity with these new movies; don't make us suffer by going back and reworking the three that made him rich.

Alright, I'm gonna geek out here over this shit.
Anakin is what, 18 in the last couple films? I'm guessing he'll be in his early twenties at the most by the end of the third one, and Luke will have been born or about to be...and he's like 21, 22 in "Jedi". So Anakin would be in his mid-40's at the most when Luke pulls the mask off...but he looked at LEAST in his late 50's/early 60's. So here's the upteenth time Lucas has written himself into a corner. What a hack.

To backup JustJon's point, Lucas has been quoted as saying that none of those changes are going to happen. Now he has said things before, that have been sort of 'half-truths', but I beleive him on this one.
And Mojo, tyou do have the ages right but remember, Vader's body was completely ravaged by the Dark Side by that point. He actually would attempt to gather the power of the Dark Side to try and remove his mask and survive without it for short periods of time. You know what the sun can do to someone's face after a while, imagine what the Dark Side can do. I'm just saying.

I will have to dig out the article; but some scientists estimate that DVDs and 5 inch diameter circular spinny discs have about 10 years left at most.
Meaning, the finger to abacus to difference engine to eniac to deep blue shows an exponential evolution.
So with computer data storage came the punch card and the magnetic tape then the 5 inch floppy and then 3.5 floppy and then CD-ROMs and now DVDs. Skiiping many many steps there but...
What I'm saying is:
3.5 floppy used to be adequate. My first AOL? one floppy. still have the damn thing. 1 Floppy, for arguments sake = 2MB
a CD-ROM? Well the CD-Rs in front of me read. 700MB for data.
a DVD? Well the DVD-R in front of me says 4.7 GB. That's single layer. Dual layer discs are double that.
I bought a 160GB External HD for $99. About the size of a paperback book.
Now, if history follows this path; we will be looking back at DVDs in ten years like we now look back at 3.5 floppys. Still used? sure! But it's becoming a rare option on many computer lines.
Five Years from now? Well; Terabyte Computers will be the norm if not alreay obsolete. If quantum computer storage becomes a viable consumer technology? Forget it. When atoms become the bits; you could fit the contents of the library of congress in the space of a grain of salt. Sagan did a piece with a similar title "The world in a Grain of Salt"
CD-ROMs and DVDs sure are practical and sturdy and you can carry them around and burn and rip and all that; but I feel the technology to carry every Lucasfilm ever made on a little media card on your keychain is just around the corner. Actually it's been here for years, but as you can see, for now; CD-ROMS and DVD are very very inexpensive data storage devices. But will go the way of the punch card.
[Edit: Duh; I forgot the main reason as to future viability. You have to spin the DVD or CD-ROM, at least for now. Moving Parts = Less Gooder. As skip-proof as any CD player might claim to be; something with absolutely NO moving parts will be better, by defitinition. The data transfer rate wont be dictated by RPMs; it will be..who knows?]

I'm going to pretend Mike Teach didn't post all that. Coz I'm not sure what it has to do with Star Wars, and or the things Lucas is or isn't going to put on the DVDs.
I limit my geekdom to the idea that if didn't happen/was said in any of the films, it don't count.
That's an unfair way to look at it. Because of the time lag between the Trilogies, and the countless short stories, novels, and video games that were produced in the meantime, many things unmentioned in the first Trilogy have become canon (e.g. Anakin falling into the lava pit, the Jedi Holocron, the history of the Sith "Always there are 2"). These ideas did not originate with Lucas but have become accepted as the way things are. Anything and everything 'Star Wars' has to be approved by Lucasfilm. I'm not saying Lucas reads and rubber stamps all of it himself, but there is a procedure to maintain continuity. So if it happened in one of these books or what have you, it happened in the Star Wars Universe. There is even rumor of a character from Zahn's Dark Force Rising books making an small appearance in Ep III, either Jorus C'Boath or Thrawn are my guesses if the rumor is true.

All of those books and comics and games have serves to do nothing but muck up Lucas' already contradictory writing. They've forced him to cram so much "insider" stuff into the new movies that they've suffered terribly.

I'm not making a judgement of the quality of the movies. You're right, there is such a glut of things out there some of which is indeed contradictory, that Lucas ends up choking on his own creation. But the fact still remains that it all has to be taken into consideration. That's the problem. If all that existed was the original Trilogy, and perhaps a few, carefully written pieces, tightly edited to ensure continuity, then he wouldn't have half the trouble he has now.

Keep in mind the site you got this information from is a FAN SITE where all the speculation and conjecture in the world can happen. I feel some of the things may be added. And when I clicked on your link there were at least 60 changes for all three movies. I feel there may be 5 of those changes as part of the DVD, and you would be lucky at that. Also read the top of the article...the person writing it acknowledges that many of that is just rumor.
All of those books and comics and games have serves to do nothing but muck up Lucas' already contradictory writing. They've forced him to cram so much "insider" stuff into the new movies that they've suffered terribly
To what are you referring to when you speak of some of the 'insider' stuff? Books and comics that occur after Return of the Jedi (ROJ) or Pre-Star Wars (Ep IV, for the geeks)?? I know Lucas has authorized Del Rey to write books about the clone wars, and there is one 'Shatterpoint' that I am reading now.
Lucas has also dictated in the New Jedi Order that NOTHING is allowed to happen to Luke Skywalker. For anyone familiar with this fantastic series, it occurs 25 years after the Battle of Yavin (battle scene at end of Star Wars: Ep IV) where a new alien species from outside the galaxy has invaded. I believe that Lucas may be writing a script for a new trilogy after that event. But he has dismissed this idea cause he will be 90 at the time of filming. But one can always hope some young script writer will pick up the torch and complete a new trilogy...

Coz I'm not sure what it has to do with Star Wars, and or the things Lucas is or isn't going to put on the DVDs.
Yeah, I forgot to go full circle.
What my conclusion should have been, is that there will be a time when the Star Wars films will be available in every conceivable permutation imaginable. The series is so popular that I could imagine a DVD [and there are some now that are using this] where you could customize each movie to your personal preferences: like how people can customize players on a PS2 game. You want old Jabba or New Jabba? Maybe watch a version where Jar-jar binks is simply gone. Put the deleted scenes in, as you wish, the ones you wish, in the story. Change the music. Who knows.
And if any/all of that sounds like sacrilige; some say anything that involves the slightest alteration from the original theatrical releases of the Star Wars Series; esp. 4-6, is a Crime. Not me, but the purists are there.
So; who knows what will be in store for these DVDs? I remember purists having Huge debates about the DVD transfers of the early Alien series [too dark; Aliens grainy] and that the color tomes of the Godfather DVDs was off.
So I'm with you in eagerly expecting these. Hell, I had the Laserdisc Box Set; that was digital sound, DVD quality, and widescreen. And I sold the whole collection and played when DVDs were coming out. Bad Move, Those versions are Amazing!

More like three years, from inception to when the first movie was in the can. and I think they filmed some stuff for the third movie last week, which would make it almost six years.
BTW, I love lucas' insistance that the prequel trilogy was the way it was always supposed to be, then he takes a minor (and throw away, might I add) character that was adopted by fans as a bad-ass, then retroactively makes him a major focal point of the empire's army.
Lucas has no clue what he's doing with star wars. since 1982 he's really just made high tech puppet shows.

I agree with Mojo, the movies are the cannon. When interviewed before Ep 1 came out, Time magazine asked Lucas if he read the Expanded Universe shit and his answer was "no comment." The new movies have very easily and often contradicted that shit anyway (besides, most of it is badly written hack shit that makes Lucas' writing look like classical literature)
many things unmentioned in the first Trilogy have become canon (e.g. Anakin falling into the lava pit, the Jedi Holocron, the history of the Sith "Always there are 2").
That one is actually from the Ep 1 novelization, which means it can be taken as cannon. Darth Bane is also mentioned by name in that book.

They said the exact same thing about CD's way back when. That they would break down and the music would start to drop out.
I've been collecting CD's since '87. 2 of the first ones I got were The BEATLES "Sgt. Pepper" & YES "90125". I still listen to them 16 years later. No problems whatsoever.
Now, that's not sayin' that this may not happen to DVD's, and yes, I'm sure there will be a new format. The point is... I'll believe it when (and if) it happens.
OH, and I also will not have a problem if Lucas redoes the Trilogy AGAIN, as long as the originals are re-released as well.
I just picked up the new DVD version of PINK FLOYD "Live In Pompeii" and along with the new extra footage version, is the original, cleaned up film. :)

Yes indeedy! And that brings up a point of how incredible can the imagination be when something so amazing as LOTR can be written during the beginning of the Atomic Age and not during the Dark Ages as you would expect.
BUT...the whole point of this is how, if there are any, improvments there will be made to the Star Wars Original 3 movies.
I just hope Lucas is not sitting TOO high on his pile of money that he cannot hear the cry's of the dedicated fans yelling WHY? Or WHAT was that??

If in 10 years time, HDTV has REALLY taken off then I would agree with this. But for most people VHS still looks "good enough" and DVD is spreading so fast and getting so cheap (Brand New DVD players for $30 in last weekends Newspaper ads section, Less than some single DVD discs when they first came out!)I can't see people stopping the purchase of DVDs. If people are buying them companies will continue to make them as that's where the money will be.
it'll be a LONG time before a majority of the USA really wants to download a movie (which is what they keep telling us will be the future) instead of just picking up a tiny 5 inch disc.

Mojo, wrong book. That one is said to be ghost written by Alan Dean Foster anyway.
As an aside, Foster wrote the first "EU novel" Splinter of the Mind's Eye. It was the first SW story to be contradicted by the movies as well. Completely ignored and "wrong" by the Empire Strikes Back.
