I'm in Chicago for work, and I'm in a hotel on the 33rd Floor. This morning I woke up to a creaking that sounded like I was on the inside of a boat. I believe that when you're up so high, the building can shift in the wind, hence the creaking. The funny thing is that at ground level today, it wasn't all that windy. In fact, a cab driver told me it was supposed to be one of the mildest days on record for Chicago in November. It's kind of cool, but more than a little disconcerting.

It just started up again. I can tell already I'm going to have a tough time sleeping because of the noise.

On an unrelated note -- has Roger Ebert lost some weight? If so, I think I ran into him in the lobby.

I know it doesn't help you much, but just be GLAD for that noise. Be glad the building gives a little instead of snapping. It was designed to do that.

A union guy told me that in the WTC on windy days, the water would slosh out of the toilets the building moved so much.

yeah, i used to work in one of the "other" world trade center buildings. i wasn't even that high up, but on windy days, you could hear the building creak, and could feel it swaying. i always got freaked out by it but, like moe said, knew logically that i should be glad.

Ever been to a concert or game at Giants Stadium in those upper tiers when people start stomping? Yikes.

Well I will get you worried. Lots of those guys are felons and drunks. They do rails off the I beams and like to cut out other trade's work if it's in their way.

Plus, they piss on EVERYTHING.

YES!!! I was so freaked out I almost bailed and left my car on the bridge. Seriously, if my apartment swayed that much, I would move.

Maybe the whole building is a huge super-conductive antenna that was designed and built expressly for the purpose of pulling in and concentrating spiritual turbulence.

I was gonna say what TooCute said! I was! So I quoted the applause so that I could get some applause, too. Ah, the polite sounds of blue alien hand applause, ah.

Did Roger Ebert lose some weight?

Yes, he did. And he is speaking from the side of his mouth like Jim Ross or Kirk Douglas. I'm concerned for him. And to show my concern I sent a smurf doll with a butcher knife through it to Roeper with the note attached reading, "You're killing Roger, movie boy...Leave Chicago or you gonna get it, movie boy... anonymously yours, David East Side

No, I did not feed her that line. I'm reading this just now, scrolling down, knowing exactly what I'm gonna post, and then pow...I'm reminded again why our love is all of God's money.

Anyway, I'm heading to Tupelo, Mississippi via Chicago next week. Do they have skyscrapers there? Do they scrape?

I'm on the 15th floor and it creaks here all the time. In fact, as I look out the window, the tops of all these buildings are swaying like pussywillows. I just needed to get that word in here.

My friend's dad worked in the Trade Center. On windy days his secretary would get nauseous because the building would sway.

Might be but even folks on the ground floor might notice that on a very windy day, the water in the toilet can start moving up and down and around.

Instead of my usual dry boring explanation: It's basically the same physics that will sometimes take the roof off a house but leave the walls standing in a tornado

I worked on the 102nd floor of the WTC for a summer in the 80's. Doors would slam shut, pencils would roll off your desk, coffee would spill out of your cup if it was too full. It never bothered me that much but it was definitely something you noticed the first day.

I think all this has to do with "natural frequencies"...like everything in nature has a "natural frequency" that if its reached like in a building or something, the force of that freqency will make it unstable...thats why if an infantry unit marches across a pontoon bridge they have to march out of step or the bridge will sway all over the place..
