Vietnam almost eneded the world?

My history teacher said that if anyone wrote a paper about how Vietnam almost, or could have ended the world he would give us something really cool. He said he might even give out money which would be wicked awesome. He said though, the information is hard to find. But we have the smartest people in the world on this board. So, anyone know?

I'll give ya a quick little outline,champ.

Obviously, the U.S. did not want to offend the Soviets or the Chinese with a full scale attack of the North during the war. There were political considerations,such as Cambodia and Laos, as well as the Chinese border. Add Soviet MIG fighter pilots to the mix also.

Additionally, and this is the point that you should concentrate on,but during the 1968 battle of Khe Sanh, the U.S. considered using tactical nukes to clear the area for the surrounded U.S. Marines.

A good source that comes to mind is Stanley Karnow's Vietnam.

Well, I will say this; if you're Teacher is looking for some Specific scanario, then you are SOL because I can think of a few dozen.

People forget about the wisps of fate. Everyone will Monday Morning QB this, but for WW1 and WW2 I say, it easily could have gone the other way. The germans had gobbled up europ quite nicely, and if not for the Battle of Britain...

And who knows on the Pacific Theatre? Some say Hiroshima and Nagasaki were a necersary Cruelty that saved thousands of lives on both sides by ending the war quickly. Who knows? What if the Manhattan Project had failed utterly? Believe me on that one I can tell you Many on the project were, even the night before, showing calculations Proving it would not Work. And it did.

And if they hadnt surrendered? Or if Korea never happened?

Too many variables. If we rewound the 'tape of life' to say; 1800, how differently might things be? Is this THE future, or is it just the one of infinite ones that played out...

Mike, then there was the reports early on (I think even Oppenheimer had his concerns) that they really were not sure that the chain reaction would stop short of taking out a huge chunk of the planet's surface. (unless I'm mistaken) - sobering thought. Sounds way too much like that supercollider test they ran a couple of years ago - again the math was a little fuzzy and some of the experts were concerned about huge side effects (like Earth ending)

Then eventully all the Counrys would come into it.....The the DMZ would be over runned....It Would of Probley been V.C North Korea Russia East Geramny. VS. Maybe the Chinese woulda got pissed off more than they should have when the Russians backed the NVA in their short war with China in the late 70's...but did China have the Bomb then?

Hell, it would be easier to write a paper on how Korea almost ended the war what when MacArthur wanted to nuke the Yalu and China proper to keep the Chi Coms out of the war...

Or maybe, maybe, a discovery during the war of all the Chinese that were fighting with the NVA and maybe there were Russians there too..I remember in the book "We Were Soldiers Once..and Young" Col. Hal Moore at the Ia Drang reported some suspicious looking NVA who looked Chinese, but some suit he'd never heard of got on the hook and told him to never...EVER...mention that fact again to anyone...
