I do not want to start arguments here, or any whining about R&F.

I also was not sure where to put this.......

With all the format changes lately at WNEW, why don't they do the one format that is almost guaranteed to work? By this I mean country. There is no country station in the NY/Fairfield County, CT area.

Is there some sort of conflict with another station that I am not familiar with? Any other reasons?

To cut off what I know is coming, just because you dislike country, does not mean that there are thousands that do like it.

Good point Tazz. There is no country station in the area, and plenty of people who would listen to it.

As for your WHY question? I think the problem lies with the fact that you are thinking rationally.

Obviously, the people responsible for "Music Women Like to Listen To" and 24 hour Christmas programming cannot be reasoned with.

why the hell are so many stations in spanish, though i will give them credit, ive never heard the same thing twice. same with the jazz station though could be because you cant tell the difference between em really

anyway country music sucks, and maybe thats why there isnt one

My friend's redneck mother is CONSTANTLY listening to this station that plays nothing but country. I never took note of what station it is, but it does mean that there's a country station in the NY market.

on a serious note though, country music does seem to still be heavy toward one, for lack of a better term, type of people. and there arent enough of that again type of people around here to make it work i dont think

I may not be a fan, but country music has come a LONG WAY from that depressing, slow shit we all remember it being.

It has a lot of Rock influence, and even if it is kinda ghey, it is a lot more upbeat and marketable.

Shania Twain just doesn't have the same affect over the radio that she does on TV...

I would imagine there's enough room for an additional Country station but it probably just doesn't draw enough listeners in the tri-state area. which means less advertisement dollars.

drove down to N Carolina a week back and it was hard to locate a rock and roll station amongst the many country stations.

There are plenty of country music fans around here. I can take it or leave it. I just feel like there is a HUGE untapped market out there.

Mainstream country sucks. Its all Garth Brooks and Dixie Chicks. If they wouod play stuff like Willie Nelson and Hank Sr. It would be great but that would never really work in NY.

Thanks to Reefdwella for the great Sig Pic.

Mr. Cash has a point here. I think the main reason why they haven't tried country music is because a "true country" station simply will not work in New York City. Why broadcast over the airwaves a way of life that just isn't similar to the market youre broadcasting to? That's the best answer I can give you.

Personally, I still don't understand why Infinity hasn't had the common sense to make WNEW a station that plays music that retarded Asian midgets love. This is a major demographic that is simply being IGNORED by New York radio.

i liked the one's like "Phantom 109"? i think it was 109. About the phanthom 16 wheeler that delivered toys to a sick child. I haven't heard it in over 20 years.

'A Boy Named Sue' was cool too...

John Denver's 'Country Road' and 'Calypso' were favorites too...

Country isn't considered a "money" demographic, for some reason.

I read a lot of these grizzled veterans on the radio boards spew out how Country won't work in NYC, and I'm inclined to agree sometimes.

okay it's Phantom 309, and it doesn't have a sick kid or 16 wheels, it's 18...

man my memory sucks! now i got to go find the one about the sick kid and i think all these truckers bring him teddy bears

Tom Waits Big Joe and Phantom 309 lyrics
well you see I happened to be back on the east coast
a few years back tryin' to make me a buck
like everybody else, well you know
times get hard and well I got down on my luck
and I got tired of just roamin' and bummin'
around, so I started thumbin' my way
back to my old hometown
you know I made quite a few miles
in the first couple of days, and I
figured I'd be home in a week if my
luck held out this way
but you know it was the third night
I got stranded, it was out at a cold lonely
crossroads, and as the rain came
pouring down, I was hungry, tired
freezin', caught myself a chill, but
it was just about that time that
the lights of an old semi topped the hill
you should of seen me smile when I
heard them air brakes come on, and
I climbed up in that cab where I
knew it'd be warm at the wheel
well at the wheel sat a big man
I'd have to say he must of weighed 210
the way he stuck out a big hand and
said with a grin "Big Joe's the name
and this here rig's called Phantom 309"
well I asked him why he called his
rig such a name, but he just turned to me
and said "Why son don't you know this here
rig'll be puttin' 'em all to shame, why
there ain't a driver on this
or any other line for that matter
that's seen nothin' but the taillights of Big Joe
and Phantom 309"
So we rode and talked the better part of the night
and I told my stories and Joe told his and
I smoked up all his Viceroys as we rolled along
he pushed her ahead with 10 forward gears
man that dashboard was lit like the old
Madam La Rue pinball, a serious semi truck
until almost mysteriously, well it was the
lights of a truck stop that rolled into sight
Joe turned to me and said "I'm sorry son
but I'm afraid this is just as far as you go
You see I kinda gotta be makin' a turn
just up the road a piece," but I'll be
damned if he didn't throw me a dime as he
threw her in low and said "Go on in there
son, and get yourself a hot cup of coffee
on Big Joe"
and when Joe and his rig pulled off into
the night, man in nothing flat they was
clean outa sight
so I walked into the old stop and
ordered me up a cup of mud sayin'
"Big Joe's settin' this dude up" but
it got so deathly quiet in that
place, you could of heard a pin drop
as the waiter's face turned kinda
pale, I said "What's the matter did
I say somethin' wrong?" I kinda
said with 8a half way grin. He said
"No son, you see It'll happen every
now and then. You see every driver in
here knows Big Joe, but let me
tell you what happened just 10 years
ago, yea it was 10 years ago
out there at that cold lonely crossroads
where you flagged Joe down, and
there was a whole bus load of kids
and they were just comin' from school
and they were right in the middle when
Joe topped the hill, and could
have been slaughtered except
Joe turned his wheels, and
he jacknifed, and went
into a skid, and folks around here
say he gave his life to save that bunch
of kids, and out there at that cold
lonely crossroads, well they say it
was the end of the line for
Big Joe and Phantom 309, but it's
funny you know, cause every now and then
yea every now and then, when the
moon's holdin' water, they say old Joe
will stop and give you a ride, and
just like you, some hitchhiker will be
comin' by"
"So here son," he said to me, "get
yourself another cup of coffee, it's on the
house, you see I want you to hang on
to that dime, yea you hang on to that
dime as a kind of souvenir, a
souvenir of Big Joe and Phantom 309"

Hey Jon,
Back in the 70s' country had a home on the am dial, 1050 WHN was an extremely popular station and had decent ratings. They started to drop off in the 80's and then they flipped to all sports, WFAN.(who have since moved to 660 am, the old WNBC station). Country made a comeback on FM with Y-97, and it did okay at first but again, they slipped in the ratings. I think NYC needs a country station, but the "experts" say it doesn't appeal to the "urban" listeners, only to you guys in the 'burbs. I disagree. Besides, country stations have fragmented into different formats: classic country, new country and other variations. WNEW could do better with country now, but the way they are going an all polka format would be an improvement at this point.

He whose ranks are united in purpose will be victorious.

Yeah, they called it Blink and everyone changed over.

I think country could work if marketed properly. The biggest prob Y107 - it was 107.1, now spanish, formerly country, formerly X107, formerly a really good alterna-station - had was limited range. For a country station to work in teh tristate area, it needs to not only cover the city, but the rural parts of NY and NJ as well.

Why isnt it Country? Because nobody would listen.

Why not? Because country sucks.

A station playing audio of good movies would do better.
