View Full Version : A look into the mentality of a Dittohead

With OxyContin Boy returning to the airwaves tomorrow, a psychologist examines the mindset of those who choose to get their political views from an AM radio talk show host.

Limbaugh's Fans Are Certain They're Right (http://www.newsday.com/news/opinion/ny-vpgin123537722nov12,0,2072961.story?coll=ny-viewpoints-headlines)

There are seldom any real disagreements between the host and the already converted choir to which he bombastically preaches. Their collective nickname says it all - they are the well-scrubbed ranks of "ditto-heads" - people who can be counted on to shout "amen," who have little to add but a grateful and admiring "ditto."

Sadly, the tradeoff seems to be worth it for them. What they sacrifice in terms of individuality and intellectual integrity is seemingly more than offset by the potent narcotic of reassuring simplicity. Many of them probably also derive a sense of inclusion and pseudo-intimacy via this electronic fraternity of kindred spirits. Consider the somewhat pathetic character, Marty, who checks in daily with his radio "buddy," Sean Hannity, a Limbaugh clone. There are plenty of other Martys out there who regularly light up the call boards of right-wing talk jocks - among them G. Gordon Liddy, Matt Drudge and Laura Ingraham - who unabashedly mimic the Limbaugh formula of ideological simplicity.

What's more, callers may get a sense of derivative celebrity and charisma from seeming to hang out - if only for a minute or two - with a mega-rich and politically powerful figure like Limbaugh. They get a chance to feel real smart when the master seems to agree with them, failing to see that it is actually they who are agreeing with him. Further, they are mindlessly agreeing with the powerful economic interests he insidiously represents.

Or, to put it in terms that the average Limbaugh listener can compute: they're all sheep!

That's funny, because I listen to both Hannity and Limbaugh AND I disagree with them sometimes. Off the top of my head I can say I disagree with the both of them on Abortion.

And sadly for your flawed argument, I don't GET my news from them, I listen to hear their opinions on the news of the day.

Right.

the mindset of those who choose to get their political views from an AM radio talk show host.

Wrong.

Not all listeners are like that, but plenty are. And the hosts of these shows know it and thrive on it. Just be a smart listener and everything is OK. I think I said it before, but people that get their news from these shows would be like me thinking I got my news from "The Daily Show".

Can you say....Fallacy?

Because some(one) hack psychologist says so, all of us that listen to Limbaugh are "sheep"? gimme a break.

Is that why liberals want their own talk radio show(which is kinda funny since they run all media anyway), so they can have their own "sheep"?

How bout i make some outrageously stupid statements too since its okay for you to do?

*All liberals are flag burning hippies

*The left wants to demolish the American way of life

*Ted Kennedy is gay...

They are even righter than right if they happen to be the correct kind of American - Republican, Caucasian and preferably male.

Because there are no non-white, non-male Republicans/Conservatives.

Oh wait -- those are "sell-outs".

hope that's sarcasm, because if you think that the media is biased against the right (or the "left" when a Democrat is in office) then you are an imbecile. And this country's media can't inherently have a leftist bias because there is no real left in this country. Democrats are hardly left.

Exactly right. Once again Moe climbs into my brain and posts my thoughts before I do.

Just because I listen to a show every weekday, doesn't mean that I'm the same person as they are. I used to listen to Fez every day, but that doesn't mean I - ahem - prefer the company of other men - ahem.

I get so sick of these two bit psycholgists. Maybe people listen to Limbaugh because he's entertaining. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar...

And sometimes not.

It's stupid to pretend that people don't let pundits make their opinions FOR them because it's happening more and more.

Not ALL the listeners, of course not, but come ON. Listen to some of these listeners. It's painfully obvious. Don't defend the morons if you're not one of them.

In a post where you are justifiably trying to defend yourself from accusations of being a mindless follower, you probably shouldn't be spouting stuff like this.

It's fun confounding the Dittoheads, and it's not hard to figure out who they are.
You can tell by their arguments and the way they can't respond to something not covered by the show they got their ideas from.
I'm not just talking about those following Limbaugh, but other pundits as well, like that bozo O'Reilly.
