Wow; the persistance of memory...

Doesn't anyone remember Heart before they became the horrific soft-pop cliche that sucks ass?

It may be tough to see past Tugboat Annie of late, to remember the Heart that rocked as hard as any guy band of the day; and songs like baraacuda and magic man Owned the airwaves. I was lucky enough to them fairly early, maybe 1982, but sadly the slide begin, and next thing you know youre watching "These Dreams" [shudder]

Sad, because in 82 Annie was cranking out Zepplin's rock and roll so well people thought the Live Heart Cover was a Zep Boot. Except she sang it better. And Nancy Wilson? Schwing!!! And she played a Strat that just fucking smoked, and then an Ovation acoustic, and Annie did a flute solo, and then they just fucking tore apart the Spectrum in Philly.

Early Heart. I would have definately been the cream filling of the Annie/Nancy Wilson Oreo Sandwich.

Again, people like me remember when she Owned MTV. Back when they played things called music videos.

Anyway, I DJ-ed one of her bazillion shows at the Pony in Asbury Park, and I get there at 8 so there's music when doors open, and there's like 100 people already in line. Not unusual for a national act.

But as I throw on my Alice in Chains 'Jar of Flies' and the crowd starts to shuffle in I start to get a weird oompa-loompa vibe. Because these 100 people Plaster themselves next to the stage. I'm like, why are they getting so close so early? no one else is here but these early birds, and they have about 4 fours before she's even gonna hit the stage.

I'm helping the guys set up the stage, so I'm right there, and it hits me. I look at all the ladies in that crowd. Hey, theyre ladies!

But Wait, I look at all the men, and it hits me. Hey! Every single person here is a CHICK!

Insane. I'd known Joan attracted the ladies, but this was nuts. This I'm pretty sure is far enough back that I hadnt really paid attention to her, so her digging chicks was pretty much in the back of my mind.

So the place fills up; and it's Lesbo-City! OK, thats overstating it, but i'll say this, what a kickass group of people; I of course ended up talking to some of them, these were Fans, literally from the word Fanatic. These people ate Joan up.

And her set? Imagine how good Joan Jett could be live, and multiply it by five. Wasnt a foot to move in the place. 2 hours plus; just banging out anything and everything. I'd just known her as the chick on MTV, I did not know she had the real deal when it came to live chops. Weird, because I did know some of the Runaways stuff. Fantastic.

After the show I grabbed her best of CD from the Merch people and she signed it and wrote in big letters YOU ROCK, which explains why I say that ad mauseum.

Mary Prankster is a quartet out of Baltimore, MD. The band was awarded a Wammy (Washington Area Music Association) in 2000 for Best Female Vocalist (Alternative Rock). Mary has two CDs available; the latest "Roulette Girl" and the debut "Blue Skies Over Dundalk."

Good friend of the cosmic circus. We went to wjfk one night to be on the Ron and Fez show. That night, the boys had to go back to NY for an "emergency"..
So we hung out and jammed in the wjfk garage.
There is a movie/ documentary coming out soon about her.. amazing writer and performer.
