I went in for a MRI on tuesday and I noticed it was really loud. I've had other MRI's but why are they so loud?

cause they are using sound waves kinda to take the pictures. they bounce a signal like off of you and then it comes back with a picture of whats there. thats basically the way they explained it when i had one, so i took that to figure its prob some kind of sound thing like sonar kinda and thats why they are so loud

if you need another one and dont like that, its a little more, but open MRI's are around now. thhe machines are loud but your just sitting there like x rays and so its not as bad and your not as cramped

I actually like them. At first they are cramped but then I relax and kinda relax to the noise. The worst part is when the pull me out and they inject die into my blood stream(they do that for MRI's of the brain). But the actual MRI doesn't bother me

I just cant take the sight of needles. It's not the fear of getting a shot, just the fear of sharp objects.

About 11 years ago, my doctor wanted me to get an MRI to check my pituitary gland (this is back in the day when doctors prescribed expensive tests knowing the HMO would cover it). This is before the "open air" MRIs and the ones where you can watch videos and listen to music. The idea of being stuffed into a very cramped space was bad enough. I knew there was NO WAY in hell I wouldn't flinch when the loud rattling started, thus screwing up the scan. I got there and backed out. Couldn't do it. Never got it done.

BTW-- my pituitary gland is just fine.

the worst part of an MRI to me is when they tell me to try not to move...instantly everything starts to itch and i feel like i must move every body part.

They aren't loud, it's just the super x-ray waves rattling around inside your brain.

After doing them every night and loading the thing to do em, you get used to it and that fear is dimished. I had the same fear of sharp objects but not anymore.

man this isn't about MRI's, but i got a shot a couple of weeks ago and apparently my blood is mollasses because it took a solid 3 or 4 minutes to get 2 vials of my blood and the nurse asked me 3 times if I had eaten anything. It wound up my cholestorol actually went down but it was still wierd.

It's not sound or x-rays or anything like that.

You are being surrounded by a very large electromagnet; the knocks you hear are the sounds of the machine as it turns the electromagnet on and off in pulses.

MRI's work off of something called Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. What's happeneing is the Hydrogen atoms in your body have a certain orientation; and you have loads of Hydrogen in your body, in the water.

When the Magnetic Pulse fires on; the magnetic field generated causes the Hydrogen atoms to all 'line up' with the lines of magnetic force. When the Pulse turns off, the Hydrogen atoms return to their original orientation. Think of making the Hydrogen atoms blink like a light. Not at all what's actually happening, but...

Different tissues = different densities = different orientations = different intensities of
'blink'.

The machine measures these blinks, the different strengths and orientations [hence the machine moving; and you having to be still, and why it takes a while], and creates an image.

Since it's electromagnetic; it's not dangerous ionizing radioation like x-rays. And also why you have to remove the metal on you.

Quiz on Friday.

[pssssst... all the med people know the open MRIs don't take images as detailed as closed ones. They're getting better, but still...]
