drove down with the family this past week to visit my two bro's who live right outside Charlotte. my one brother has 4 kids and bought a new home earlier this year so being i haven't been down in nearly 10 years i figure we'd visit. he always comes up to see pop and that's when we normally get to see him or him and the family.
anyway!
it turns out he is a Maintenance guy in a 'well-to-do' senior facility. some pay over 250k for a residency and 2k a month afterwards. But you talk about a small world, one of his co-workers is from Jersey City where we grew up and the other 2 are from Newark. Looks like there's alot of people from the north living down there.
i called my cousin from NC because his mother-in-law passed right before we left and he said his wife has alot of family in Charlotte.
How about you, do you have friends or relatives in NC?

Applying the Bobby Pantera rule, if you would have just stopped here, this post would have been hysterical!
I'm going to wait for the Iowa thread to post something and

The banks of the river run through my hometown
As a boy I ran the dirt roads, and I scraped my knees
Well they paved the roads eventually
With neon signs and car dealerships and diners
The soldiers fill the hotels on the weekends
I saw the pretty women as I walked through town
Well, I moved away soon as I turned sixteen
Figured I was old enough to go and work a job
Well I floated down main street, pools of car lights
Overcame me wishing I was still back home
The soldiers fill the hotels on the weekends
I saw the pretty women as I walked through town
Well, Jacksonville's a city with a hopeless streetlight
Seems like you're lucky if it ever change from red to green
I was born in an abundance of inherited sadness
And .50 cent picture frames bought at a five and dime
I ended up a soldier on the weekend
Looking for a vacancy I was unable to find
Somewhere the night sky hangs like a blanket
Shoot it with my cap gun just to make it
Seem like stars

He'd like you to think so, but it's impossible to wash off the funk of Winona.

Gap ads and general prickishness aside, his new album is amazing.

Stuck a pin in your backbone.
Spoke it down from there.
All I ever wanted was to be your spine.
Lost your friction and you slid for a mile.
Overdone, overdrive, overlive, override.
You're not the one who let me down,
But thanks for offering.
It's not a voice and I'm not around.
But thanks for picking it...
Up, on the radio.
Sampled your rust from a faucet, I know.
I've got a magnet in my head,
A magnet in my head.
Extra thick, extra long, the way it was wasted.
And there's a chance that things'll get weird.
Yeah, that's a possibility.
Although I didn't do anything,
No, I didn't do anything.
All I ever wanted,
All I ever wanted,
All I ever wanted was to be your spine.
And a mouth kept shut and a tongue twist tie.
You're the web in front, you're the favorite lie.
You're a buck my lip, you're a lash my lie.
You're the web in front of a favorite lie.
Stuck a pin in your backbone.
Spoke it down from there.
All I ever wanted was to be your spine.
I've got a magnet in my head, a magnet in my head.
Extra thick, extra long, the way it was wasted... wasted.

Impossibly so. And the EP is just as good, if not just a bit better. I've got my tickets to see him here in DC on December 7th.
What's even more horrifying is that the guy has put out a total of 8 great to fantastic albums in just about 6 years. DISGUSTING.

As a matter of fact I do! (thanks for asking)
I have two cousins both married, One with a daughter and now preggo again, the other childless, My Aunt and Uncle also live down there. (They live in McGreggor Downs...if you know anything about golf...it is a paradise there). My brother moved down there only about 2 months ago. They all live in the Raleigh/Cary area.
Oh yes...and I have never seen so many alcoholics in my LIFE!

I am the proud owner of this:
http://www.caitlincary.com/images/faithless.jpg
Saw them first in 1995. They blew me away.
Like Michelangelo Merisi was to art, Whiskeytown was to No Depression. Ryan, like Caravaggio, was a hinge in his art form.
There was alternative country before Whiskeytown and there was alternative country after Whiskeytown.
And they were not the same.

Hey, I got myself a copy of "Rural Free Delivery" from when they were still listed in our store system as "local artists".
Someone's a big boy now.

My best friend is from NC (Concord). That's all I knew of it until my parents recently mentioned they're considering a move to NC when they retire. Apparently, NC is rated the most favorable retirement spot in the country. More and more northerners are moving there every year. It's "the new Miami", or so I'm told.

Does this mean it'll be over-run with Cubans in a few years?

the homes are cheaper than here but i believe the salaries are lower...
they do love their racecar driving down there...
when i'm down there and everyone is talking with the southern accent it makes me feel like i'm in a different world and that these people have no knowledge of the things we 'know of' in the North.
I wondered if they were less affected emotionally by what occurred on 9/11 than we were just because of their geographical location... and stuff like that...
