Why dig up old threads? I say if it hasn't been seen in 3 months, fuck it.
And no, I'm not making anyone go digging.
TC - Of those threads, 5 out of 6 haven't even been posted in this year. The one that has was last touched in March. I understand multiple similar threads popping up shouldn't happen, but let's be reasonable... There's 289 pages of threads in this forum ALONE. If it's a matter of days or even weeks, fine. But threads from SEVERAL months ago can suck on it.

Why would I discuss beer with people who can't even drink or purchase it legally?
TC must've missed the beer thread that was knocking around a couple months back. I remember being slackjawed at the people who actually though that Red Stripe was the worst beer they had ever had.
No, wait, strike that. That was the "WORST BEER YOU EVER HAD" thread.
That being said, as long as it's not Miller, Beast, Pabst, Corona, Rolling Rock or any kind of wretched Asian beer, I'm sound as a pound.

The problem with digging up old threads is that then people won't look at the date people posted, think it's from a few hours ago (when it's in reality from a few weeks/months ago) and try to engage that poster in a conversation when the previous poster will be unawares someone is talking to them.
That being said.
Hi, I'm Matty, and I drink beer.
Say what you want and turn your nose down to it, I'll always be happy with a Miller Lite. I think it's absolutely ingenius that they are advertising it's low carb, because it'll blow Michelob Ultra right out of the water (considering Ultra tastes like crap)

Sam Adams Light

In addition:
Best going out to get fucked up and drink shots of Wild Turkey
with:PBR. Also, it's the beer of choice when I hang with Terror
or my friend Big Greg. Only beer that tastes good out of a can.
Best "lawnmower" beer: Miller or Old Milwaukee. Yeah, if I'm out
mowing my lawn all day in the summer, a cold "less filling" lager
goes down better and is more refreshing than say a Fuller's ESB.
But there's something still scary about drinking a beer that uses
corn as an adjunct. I like all my fermentable sugars to come
from malt.
And without a doubt, the worst beer on the planet, the skunk
beer that's probably skunky if nothing else than because it
comes in a clear bottle, which by definition makes it more skunk
prone, the one that is served with a lime FOR A REASON, not
cause it's cool (the marketers will have you think this and have
been doing a great job at it) BECAUSE LIME IS THE ONLY WAY
TO MAKE IT PALATABLE: Corona.
Honorable Dis-mention: Coors Light. If I want to drink club soda,
I'll order Club Soda. The beer for people who don't like the taste
of beer. What's the point?

There should be 500 worst beer threads about the poison that is Corona. I wouldn't use it to drown slugs.
Oh, and sorry to offend the Corona drinkers out there...feel free to rip on Fuller's ESB. This is a subjective topic. I can hate the sin but still love the sinner and all that.
If anyone is interested, the history of Corona and how it went from a cheap mass produced beer targeted at poor Mexicans (in Mexico) to "hip" beer in the USA is a classic example of brilliant marketing, worthy of a Harvard B-School Case Study.

What planet am I living on??
The same planet where either Old Milwaukee or PBR was awarded a Gold Medal in a prestigous beer competition a few weeks ago. It was on FARK.com.
Just because it's EXPENSIVE or RARE does not make it the best. Being the best is in the eyes of the beholder. I've had a lot of expensive beers that taste like shit to me.
I think we're looking a little too much into what Chicken Hawk posted. Best could be translated into "favorite", as in what's the best beer TO YOU.
We're arguing semantics here. Last I checked, no one here was a World-Class Beer Judge.
But I sure as hell don't think they're the BEST mexican and chinese food around and I no shit pity anyone that does. Or I would if I could get over the inherent revulsion in realizing that some peoples' experiences in life have actually led to them having that opinion.
Trust me, I've drank enough beer in my life to know what I do and do not like. It's not like I've ONLY drank Miller Lite my entire life and I say that everything else sucks even though I've never tried it.
I've had enough beers, from microbrews to homebrews to mass-produced stuff to know what I like.

Yeah, but someone famous once said that "...in matters of taste there can be no debate". So it always comes down to your favorite beer, band, color, food, etc.
My current fave beer is Harp.

See Chicken Hawk, I think all you wanted was a simple answer. Perhaps Steels is correct in placing specific requirements on his threads. Well, maybe not, but I'm just going to fire off some more shit to stir the wort.
Best beer has to be subjective, right? I said that in my first reply. But I tend to like the taste of those beers that taste like beer and are crafted with quality ingredients and made using the only ingredients that should be in beer: barley malt, hops, water, and yeast and are characterized by intense hop bitterness and medium maltiness (I think that's a word.) I enjoy drinking this type of beer almost all of the time. It's not an elitist thing although it may seem that way. I can't stand Belgian beers, wheat beers, and flavored beers. I'll let Too Cute have her Chimay and Ommegang. Give me a Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout please.
Now: I also chimed in on beers that I might drink in certain circumstances. This is where people get touchy.
I am aware that most people in America think of an artificially carbonated, bottom fermented, mass produced, barely bitter (hoppy) brew made with adjuncts (extenders, fillers, shit that just makes it less expensive to make) like rice (i.e. Michelob, Bud) or corn (Schaefer, etc.) when they think of beer. And so do the mass beer producers, since another advantage of adding these adjuncts to beer is that it makes them sweeter, and therefore usually more attractive to the American palate. Think of it as the difference between a Hebrew National or Boar's Head frank and a Ball Park or Oscar Meyer weiner.
Now, put aside all that shit. Talk about categories. You have your Pilsners, your porters, your stouts, your ales, etc. If I like a strong, bitter, chewy beer, I'm going to most likely want a Fuller's as opposed to let's say a Miller. That's not to say that Rolling Rock isn't one of the better "piss" beers. And yes, "prestigious" beer competitions have categories for beers that would otherwise not win shit, such as the "American Style Lager", a euphemistically derived category created so that such festivals, supported by entrance fees and big bucks from huge corporations that make piss beer, won't be alienated.
This explains how Red Dog won Gold, Milwaukee's Best won Silver, and Old Style won Bronze (and people can "brag" about this) at last year's Great American Beer Festival.
Other winners:
American-Style Light Lager
Gold :Old Style Light
Silver :Miller Lite
Bronze :Old Milwaukee
American-Style Premium Lager
Gold :Point Special
Silver :Miller Genuine Draft
Bronze :Budweiser
Now, take it from me:
American Style Lager is a euphemism for mass produced, lawnmower, your uncle drinks 14 of them locked up in a room with his dog while watching the Green Bay Packers game in his lucky chair and won't let anyone disturb him except your aunt so she can bring him his chipped beef and cheese curds...beer.
And people like it. Go them. And these prestigious beer festivals get big bucks from companies named Anheuser-Busch, Inc. of Saint Louis, MO and Adolf Coors, Inc. of Golden Colorado.
Well let me tell you something, the piss I use for my Golden showers came in Honorable Mention last year.
Now take someone's Miller and take my Fuller's ESB. They are as different as a Chateau Petrus and a jug of Gallo Wine product. They are as different as a Fonseca 1977 Vintage Port and Grape Mad Dog 20/20. They are as different as Kraft Singles and imported gorgonzola.
And so you know what? When I start my "Great World Wine Festival", I'm going to have a left bank and a right bank vintage Bordeaux award AND a "Gets You Fucked Up with your Fraternity Brothers at the Football Game" category. Cause I'm going to make money from everyone and give out medals to everyone. Cause that's how these festivals make money. And it's all about money dude.
And if Michael Jackson is a judge at my beer festival (not the singer, the beer expert).. when he picks "Best Overall Beer in the World" my simple Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is going t

I'm with the Chairman on this one, although our tastes differ. Miller Lite and the like are fine for people on a budget (like myself) or for those who don't want to challenge their tastebuds. If, as Chickenhawk asks, I could only pick one beer for life, a utilitarian beer such as Bass or even Budweiser would certainly fit the bill. They're fine, not outrageously expensive, and can go with most any meal. They're not, however, "great" beers in that they don't make you go "wow" whenever you take a sip.
As far as a stout goes, it really doesn't get any better than Guinness. I'm a big fan of Boddington's and Hoegaarden. I'll drink any beer once. The Anchor Christmas beer is great, too.. although they change the formula a bit every year.

This is why I would have added a category for "Best Beer to Play Beer Pong/Beirut With" and then if I'm the judge I'm going to pick the one that's "less filling" and if I really want to pick the best beer for Beirut I'm going to look at Plato numbers and specific gravity cause I want to know if that beer is going to stick to a ping pong ball a litter better than the next one, making it a little heavier and easier to aim into that cup that is resting in front of that hot sorority chick from Chi Omega I'm trying to nail.

I second the motion that Old English 800 is the best 40 beer. I go to a ghetto college, and on my way back from Washington heights/Dyckman, Ill often pick up some OE as opposed to Balentine or St Ides (which is the WORST).
Now I prefer ghetto beers because that was what i was raised on. My father strickly drinks shaefers, Old Milwakee, Milwakee's best, Pabst (yummy) etc.. pretty much whatevers on sale. So when ever I was a kid those were the beers I stole and drank and are the beers i prefer drinking now. Perhaps I feel a connection with my pops when Im drinking his beer brands. On a side note, when my dad wants to get fancy, or when people are coming over he splurges for Rolling Rock.
At my birthday party when my friends came in I offered them a drink. I told them i had gin, rum and Champagne, and when someone wanted a champagne Id hand them a Miller's. tee hee.
People in Ireland call Guinness mother's milk; and its almost true. It is widely believed in Ireland that a woman who is breast feeding should drink a glass of Guinness a day (which my mother did while breast feeding me and my sister). In fact they believe this so strongly there is a charity in Dublin that gives underprivledged breast feeding mothers a free glass of Guinness a day.
Guinness in Ireland is amazing, and also in Jamaica. If you can believe it there is a Guinness brewery in Jamaica, and the Guinness is delicious there. Most Jamaicans drink Guinness, especially the Rastas.

Budweiser tasts different in Ireland, its a nice beer over there. ITs kinda like Heinken over here (not in taste but in status). And a black and tan is harp and Guinness, if you get it with Bass you are betraying the Republic of Ireland and Ill blow up your car.
another question, how does chewy apply to beer? Im obviously not a Beer expert, but can that be explained?

Is has to do with the way a beer feels in your mouth, sort of like how light or heavy it is - and that doesn't necessarily have to do with the color of the beer, for example a porter, although it is very dark, is not a particularly heavy-bodied beer.
Anyway, chewiness refers to a mouthfeel that's, well, chewy... it's a character that usually comes from malt, which are contribute sweetness to a beer... your best bet is to go out and try some beer, you know the good old compare and contrast.
If you can't find the Ayinger doppelbock (which I often can't), another good, chewy beer is the Ommegang belgian-style Abbey ale which I've found at most of the beer distributors around here... compare it to a Guinness which is heavy, yet smooth and creamy (and not chewy - it has much more of a roasty malt character than a caramel-sweet malt character), or a any american pilsner (like budweiser), which basically lack any sort of malt character whatsoever.

I find Murphy's to be almost at par with Guinness. If You want to try the Old Milwalkee of Irish stouts,
grab yourself a Beemish.

Are you kidding? Beamish is great stuff, at least compared to Guinness and Murphy's. It's got athat roasted malt flavor like Guinness (but different) but doesn't have the bitterness. It also is a little heavier bodied. I like it more than Murphy's, which I find to be quite smooth and non-bitter and excellent for drinking with food because it doesn't ovepower them.
Of course in my opinion the real king of stouts is Rogue Shakespeare stout! Way more interestingly complex than that irish stuff ;)

so it was a no go one the maredsous 8, but i think i found a distributor a couple towns over- i found out they sell delirium tremors.
on a relaated topic, i wa speaking with the head chef of a new restaurant around the way. we got on the subject of delirium, and he told me a little story.
apparently, back in the days, belgium monks produced this beer. certain times of year they would fast, and the only thing they could drink was the beer they made. 30 days of straight drinking, they would suffer from dt's, and when it got really bad, that's when they knew the fast was almost over. thus delirium tremors.

When I was a kid I really, really liked malted milks. Milkshakes, vanilla, with malt powder added. Dunno why.
Anyway, three or four years ago when I was at the Sam Adams brewery I asked Jim Koch for some malt so I could make a malted milk at home. He looked at me weird and consulted with his brewmaster, Grant Wood (really!) and eventually told me that it wouldn't work, the malt powder in the milkshakes was not even close to the malt they use.
Then we smoked a hookah filled with hops.
True story.

We sent one of our employees for a liquor run at the end of work. My request was for that Anchor Xmas beer they make every year or, failing that, some Guinness. He brought back... shiver... Guinness in a bottle! Eh, I still drank it.

just prior to the storm on friday, i found a beer distributor that carriered 2 of my favorite beers. i got a 12 of sol and a pint+9oz delirium tremens. had a bottle of jameson also and the weekend flew by.
so today i had a fucking awful day (got an oil change, they didn't put the plug back in, my engine blows). now i have to figure out how to get a new engine out of these fuckers.
now it's time for a beer. i go to the beer distributor just around the corner and what do they now carry- MOLSON XXX. why they can carry it in the us now, is beyond me, but i'm set tonight.
