View Full Version : Jesus and Mary

The other day Ron and Fez had a discussion about a special that was on the other night about The Da Vinci Code. One of the things they talked about was the belief that some people have that Jesus and Mary Magdaline were married to each other and the debate about why (if it's true) was the information about them being married excluded from the Bible. The ascertation that was made was that the image of Jesus and Mary being married was viewed to convey that he would somehow be less pure if he were.
If you were to find out that it were true that they were actually married to one another, would it change the way you look at Jesus?
Keep in mind I'm not trying to get into a whole debate about the existence of god, or the anything like that, but just the concept that he was married. Do you think it would affect you? For me personally it wouldn't. I'm not very religious myself, but I don't think it would affect me in my view of Jesus in one way or another if it were true.

Of course not, ecept to the most uptight people possible...namely my Catholic mother.
Well, it SHOULDN'T change his messages. Isn't that what's most important to the end if you're praying and listening to this guy?

Well now come on Snoogs. This is bullshit news to you and me, but to people who care about the differences between Catholicism and Protesantism, it IS big news.
Wasn't it Jesus' example that keeps Catholic preists unmarried? To admit he was married would mean this practice was foolish. I know my protestant church didn't believe he was married either, but they at least let their people marry and have kids. Our rev. did. Even if he was a pompous asshole.

how about way back in the day, when the catholic church had 2 ways to repent your sins. confession, or $5000. oh yea, thats fine, but to say jesus was married would be foolish.

And although I think all religion is for the weak willed, I do have to point out that there are more decent clergy than perverted clergy.

I'm Catholic and I wouldn't care, despite whatever traditional theology the Church would maintain. Jesus could do whatever Jesus wanted. Jesus is way cool.
I'm not a big fan of the DaVinci code's hype. I've read tons of Jesus literature and this is sort of like the tabloid analysis of ecclesiastical history. Still, in Gnostic traditions Jesus was married. Look up the Nag Hammadi library if you're interested.
Anyway, despite this rambling, any view is possible since the Gospels and extra-biblical depictions conflict in so many different complexities.

it was nice to clarify, but you ripped everyone a new asshole. weak willed. religion is what it is. most people who choose to believe religion are fine, and keep that aspect to themselves. its the douche's that act like religion is their lives and would have no purpose to life without god are the ones you mean.
in any event, im bowing out of this now, ive had the religion discussion, and i dont feel like gettin yelled at today

I'm Catholic and it wouldn't change things much for me. Why would it be wrong for Jesus to participate in a marriage? Wasn't his mission on Earth to awaken people to the fact that God is not distant, but close to His creation? So why should it be a revelation that he was married (assuming this is true)? I am skeptical on this. If Jesus was married, it would have somehow been documented in the Bible, IMO. It's the same as the argument that Mary and Joseph had children. It doesn't change the fact that Jesus was born from the womb of a virgin.

Here, here.
I wasn't upset when it was revealed that Jesus may not have been the lovely, effeminate, doe-eyed wasp Christ figure portrayed in all of those wonderful European portraits, I'm not upset by this now.
If you believe in Christ, follow his teachings, it shouldn't matter.

Why are there so many 3's in the bible?
Jesus, Mary and Joseph
3 crosses on the hill
lost 3 days in the temple
the Trinaty
3 wise men
"on the 3rd day. he rose again"
Also, there are many refernces to Jesus having brothers and sisters in the bible. While I grew up Catholic, and my mom and sisters will always believe that Mary died a virgin, it wouldnt phase me or shake my belief if it turned out otherwise. Theres really nothing inherently "wrong" with believing any religion and people shouldnt be taunted for believing in a higher power as I see some of you are doing in this thread. Its when any religion or for that matter political or any ideolgy takes on an "extremism" that it should be shunned by society at large, and in that, Im all in favor of it. We are all free to believe what we want, and as Americans, be prepaired to fight to the death if anyone threatens to take that freedom away from us or anyone for that matter, but I say this; Extremism in anything is intolerable.

The #3 has incredible mythological and poetic resonance in many religions and stories. Some things seems to pop up in stories all over the world, implying a universal connection through all religions, either through a universal diety, or the collective unconscious (depending on your POV)
For further reading, check out the works of Joseph Campbell, and even Carl Jung.
As for Jesus, a nice Jewish boy would've married her, or else he'd break his mother's heart.

after reading "The Da Vinci Code" I have to admit that it changed my persective on Christianity a little bit. I think Jesus was married to Mary Magdaline and that he did have brothers, sisters, and even children. Too bad Christianity will always prevent us from knowing the full truths

I read a book a few years ago(don't remember the name because I lent it out and never got it back) but it was along these lines. I bought it because I thought it was a historical text on the Templar Knights. It started out being so. But the focus was really going over the secrets of the Templar's, the grail, their alleged heresy and such. I'll spare you the details, but the main point of the book was that Jesus faked his death on the cross, and moved to the south of France to preach. There was a small jewish community there. And while in France he married Mary and he fathered children.

Is it Michael Baigent's The Temple and the Lodge? Its difficult for me to respect some of these conspiracy theories not because of their far-fetchedness-although that statement is contradictory- but because they are such poor scholarly works. I place as much validity in these works as I do in the UFOs and pyramid theories.
There has been several traditions where Jesus didn't really die. The Manicheans and later incarnations of dualistic sects believed that Jesus was given a drug,or, one part of his body metaphysically separated from his divinity, etc. Either way, its all up to the individual's beliefs anyway.

i find it inconcievable that anyone doesnt believe in UFO's. with all of the universe that we havent seen, it would be not only far fetched, but even a bit ridiculous to say there is no life anywhere else. and with all the technological advances we've made in the past 100 years, whose to say that if they arent 100 years ahead of us, they cant get to here?
or you could be like the other people who try to tell me UFO's are just how time travelers enter without people thinking its time travelers. those people need to stop reading that stupid site

Since the book is an admitted work of fiction I probably wouldn't pay attention to whether Jesus and Mary Magdaline were married or not. If they were to have gotten married according to the belief of said people, so what? If he wanted to get married then that is on him.
As for the Davinci Code itself, it may have been Da Vinci playing "Where's Waldo" or "Spot the 6 differences" from Slylock Fox (http://www.slylockfox.com/six_diff.html) . I am not saying whether it is real or not, since I haven't a clue. I am saying make up your own mind based on the evidence.

Im sure theres alien life, but a ufo being a real alien visitors ship I think is a little far fetched. We have been transmitting into space (radio) since the 20's and the likelyhood of an alien civilization recieveing that signal at the speed radio travels through space ( to serve as a ''beacon") and realizing what that signal was and traveling at the speed of light (if they can travel that speed) and arrive here and just kind of fly around and not make a formal contact given the astronomical distances and expence involved seem unlikely to me.

I don't know if this is because I've been listening to Art Bell lately, (and this is really straying off-topic) but I have been thinking a lot about alleged contact between aliens and the various governments of the world. I always found it remarkable that the conspiracy theorists jump to the conclusion that aliens would strike a deal with the government as if a race of beings capable of travelling to this planet would even with the government as their equal. But, if you want to think that our government made a sweet enough deal, then be my guest.

true, except if they are advanced technologically. just far enough that they can move that far into space say. could they pick up a beacon from here where they are no way, but they could've just been cruising around one day exploring shit and got close enough to see that or hear that there is life here
