View Full Version : How many troops in a troop?

Not sure why this bothers me, but during the war, and again today, the word troops was/is being misused. Newscasters say, "80,000 troops are leaving...". Thats alotta troops I say--I wonder how many soldiers are in each troop. One soldier is not a troop, so how can 200 soldiers be 200 troops???
troop (n) 1. a group or company of people, animals, or things. 2. a group of soldiers. 3. troops. military units, soldiers. (v) to move or go as a throng. --American Heritage Dictionary
When I was in Boy Scouts, I was in a troop. Was I alone a troop? NO! One soldier does not a troop make. So, in the off chance that we have any CNN correspondents, or network anchormen as members here at RF.net, please stop misusing this word. Thank you.

Naw, one soldier CAN be referrd to a a troop.
I once read where an old crusty sergeant told a corporal: "Take this troop with you and...."
The sarge was referring to a third guy.

I always found that strange myself. But I am pretty sure when they say'80,000 troops' they mean 80,000 individual soldiers.

Not so fast. Note the plural in the definition (troops = soldiers. It doesnt say troop = soldier)

One soldier is not a troop
Yea he is. I believe the term "troop" used to be used in unit size elements, but its not anymore. maybe in the Marines they still use it, but thats not what they are talking about on the news. A soldier can and is called a troop on a somewhat regular basis.

SatCam, so because someone's POST contains the word "individual," all is right with the error??? Johneewad, I KNOW what the media mean when they use it. My point is that they are wrong. If you disagree, please quote an official source (other than someone's post as satcam did). Snoogans, what can I say? YOURE RIGHT. I would love to hear from CaptRooster for his experience, or Fuzzybutt or Silera for their knowledge of and love for the English language.

What would the official source be for defining terms that soldiers are refered to as? And theyre not wrong when they call them troops. Theyre troops! Short for troopers if you like.

Listen I'm not getting into this with some long hair that is just saying shit. I was a "troop" if you will, for 7 years and i think I know more about it then someone that only knows what hes seen on tv and in movies.

Thats why we called Mojo "Old 20.000 leagues under the sea". It's a good reference though, since I do feel like Kelsey Grammar in that sketch. Yikes.
