Remember when John Ashcroft promised us that the Patriot Act would only be used to fight terrorists? Remember when your parents told you about Santa Claus?

CORRUPTION INVESTIGATION: LV FBI used anti-terrorism law (http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/2003/Nov-04-Tue-2003/news/22512794.html)

The FBI used the USA Patriot Act to obtain financial information about key figures in its ongoing political corruption probe centered on strip club magnate Michael Galardi, federal authorities confirmed Monday.

Investigators "used a section of the Patriot Act to get subpoenas for financial documents," said Special Agent Jim Stern, a spokesman for the Las Vegas field office of the FBI. "It was used appropriately by the FBI and was clearly within the legal parameters of the statute."

...

"The Patriot Act was designed and was sold to the American people as being necessary to combat terrorism. It clearly was not intended for this," Las Vegas attorney Dominic Gentile said. "I'm confident that the citizens of the United States are on my side on this one."

Civil libertarians agreed.

"We at the ACLU have said from the beginning that the Patriot Act included provisions that the government sought for years that in no way had anything to do with the threat of terrorism, but could help them in your more garden variety criminal prosecutions," said Gary Peck, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada.

So what are you saying? That since it was known from the beginning that the Patriot Act would be abused, despite claims from the administration that it wouldn't, that we should accept these abuses?

Or are you saying that abuse of power isn't news, and therefore isn't worthy of discussion?

I fail to see the point you're trying to make, please elaborate.

I pick dat one. As much as you like whining, things aren't going to change by just whining. By discussing this you can't be seen as doing anything other than whining.

The Patriot Act isn't going to disappear anytime soon. It was deemed that the Patriot Act was necessary, it's been implemented, and it will continue to exist unless there is a change in power. Even bringing this story up is basically saying that the sky is blue because most every person who isn't super-right wing knows that the Patriot Act is being misused.

Throughout history measures taken during times of "war" have always been stretched by the government. Luckily for us, no one really cares enough about this "war" and times have changed so that no one is stomping out dissent. Sure I guess you have the right to keep posting blatant anti-Republican whining sessions, but this one ultimately is a dead end.

Throwing off the table on the active discussion page makes baby jesus cry. Remember the space bar is your friend.

I wish ass cancer on the person who brings this up tomorrow.

Replying to a Doomstone thread... fools.

Do I have a problem with the FBI applying the same methods to terrorists as they do to organized crime? No.

Shouldn't the lowest element of society be censored anyway? I believe in civil and individual liberties but when it comes to things that are deprived,it should be distanced even further from society. Either that or legalized and controlled.

See Ya!

The Stripper thing reminds me of a story told by Laurie Anderson.

She was protesting with a group in front of a major Strip Club, and they had pamphlets all about how Strippers are objectified and depicted as sub-human and shes picketing and protesting...

And one of the Strippers walks up to her and says, "Look. If you want to see abused and mistreated women, come with me down to the garment district where they make $40 a week. I have Two Kids to Support. I make $400 a day here. This is the best job I've ever had. I love this Job."

sarúcasm n.
1. A cutting, often ironic remark intended to wound.
2. A form of wit that is marked by the use of sarcastic language and is intended to make its victim the butt of contempt or ridicule

Well, look at the socialist trying to impress the cool kids! Even using their buzzword 'whining', how pathetic.

Here's a question: what is there to do on this board other than discuss? I spend maybe 10 minutes a day on this site, that leaves me with 23:50 per day to do other things besides disturb you with my 'whining'. I'm guessing you assume that the extent of my political activity is logging on to ronfez.net and 'whining', in which case you couldn't be more wrong.

Translation: We should all bury our heads in the sand and pretend like nothing's wrong!

So your answer is to advocate complacency and apathy? "Governments have always done it, and it's not like anything can be done about it anyway, so who really cares?" Many peoples have taken such roads in the past. Most of them faced tragic ends.

Well Doomstone I feel exactly the same way you do. It's just that a good majority of the country doesn't feel the same way. I was actually wrong in saying that everyone knows that the Patriot Act is being misused, because there are a lot of stupid people. They outnumber the intelligent people who can see what's wrong. In that way nothing can be done. There will always be a large part of the population that will never question anything the government crams down their throats. I guess I was just being hard on you before everyone else came in and said it. I just think that a lot of the time you are "whining" about things that are obviously wrong about the right wing. So there's no need to discuss them and comes off as just bashing the right wing unnecessarilly and making a crude characiture (spelled wrong of course) of Republicans. That's why people get so fucking mad at you. You might as well be drawing a picture of a man holding money over a poor single mother's head and laughing.

And it was fucking ridiculous that you would mention that I was a socialist when it had little to a negative amount of anything to do with the issue. By mentioning that, you merely prove that you can't really find much wrong with what I said and decided to attack me on being a socilalist in hope that someone would then attack me for being anti-American or "a dirty commie". So really I'm not going with the "cool kids"........you are..........hmmmmmmm
