OK. We all love to talk about the good times, but I'm talking about the LEAN times now. When you just REALLY need a meal for pennies, LITERALLY!
I have always found begals to be cheap, especially from a grocery store.
I also found the 2 packs of meat for a dollar at an A&P in West Paterson. With a roll for each pack at like 30 cents each, you can get 2 decent sandwiches for under 2 bucks, taking the complimentary condiments from the store deli.
But this weekend I found one of THE CHEAPEST meals EVER! Those ramen noodle packs for 10 CENTS! HOLY SHIT! At a Walmart in PA near my friend's house, 10 cent packs of ramen noodles! And they actually don't taste like cardboard noodles.
So spill it you cheap fucks! Give us your cheapest, decent meals.

the worst i ever had it, i was in a place with no kitchen and made the best of the dollar menus at mcdonalds, burger king, taco bell(sort of), and checkers.
$3 a day, for about 2 months, but luckily it was the summer and bbq season. gluttony on the weekend.

In the past when money was a little tighter I had a few which I'll include below.
Pizza bagels (two individual sides) were $1.00 each and delicious.
Before I stopped eating fast food altogether I would order the following from Wendy's for $3.00:
1.) Caesar Salad
2.) 5 piece chicken nuggets
3.) Bacon cheeseburger
The cheapest food I have ever come across (I would NOT buy or eat) would have to be meat and cheese ends at supermarkets for .99 cents a pound. If it is OK with your dog's diet this makes for a great and cheap meal/snack for them.

asian groceries are KEY
$1.50 for 1 lb ground chicken ($2.99/lb, buy only on buy one get one days and freeze it (only one worth going to regular grocery for))
$0.89 bunch of holy basil (vs. $2.99 for italian basil at the regular grocery - holy basil is waaaaaay better for this)
$0.30 for oyster sauce ($1.79 for a bottle that will last for at a bare minimum making this recipe 6 times. I've never measured but it's probably more.)(vs. $2.99 for a teensy bottle at regular grocery)
$0.10 for several cloves of garlic (I'm estimating. I have no clue how much garlic really costs but it ain't much)
$.01 for one thai chili ($0.50 for a ziploc baggie full of them)(they're usually like $3.99 a pound for assorted hot chilis at the grocery, so you're lucky if you can even find the thai chiles)
Jasmine rice (I honestly have no clue. I pay $7.99 for a 25 lb bag and it lasts me usually a good 8 months to a year so the cost is really minimal).
So that comes out to a whopping total of $2.80, and it's enough food for two people (or one hungry person plus leftover for lunch the next day). So, you're looking at about $1.40 a person for a great meal. Asian grocery stores RULE.

I've been frequenting Asian (Chinese, there is a difference) markets in North Jersey for about 8 years and they are the epitome of frugal grocery stores. They are one of my areas best kept secrets.

When I'm broke, I usually dollar menu it or get Taco Bell. It really depends on my mood but, but generally if I don't get Taco Bell I'll get McDonalds or Wendys. Last resort being Burger King. Sometimes I do go to the supermarket and get some cold cuts and a some rolls as well, though I generally like drive thrus.

I always found the dollar burger at wendy's or the dollar chili there. If you're particularly hungry, get 2.

A loaf of Wonderbread - .99
A jar of peanut butter - 2.69
A jar of grape jelly - 2.19
Free water at work
And that's a week worth of meals for about $0.84 per day.

Back in the day, before I had a job and was still in college, me and my best friend wanted to eat out but we didn't much money. So we thought it would be cool and different if we gathered how much we had (under $5) and went to the local grocery store and bought:
2 cans of soda (store brand)- .20 a can
2 rolls- .40 each
2 slices of cheese-
4 slices of ham or turkey-
1 banana
then we drove to Boulavard East and had our little picnic over looking NY in the moonlight. Oh memories.
I miss her......(having a sappy moment)..............back to topic........it was cheap, but priceless.

Burger King's "Chicken Sandwich Club" for .99 cents was probably the best deal (in my opinion) I have seen in a fast food eatery.
First off it is easily the best chicken sandwich (quality and taste wise) in the fast food industry. The "chicken club" is served not on a round roll but the long one. The toppings include cheese, bacon, lettuce and tomato. I have seen this special only twice and both times only in select Burger Kings. Coincidentally this is my favorite fast food item ever.

I am really bitter about this. I live in south western CT so there are NO Denny's to be found anywhere. My cousin went to school in Worcester, MA and there were Denny's like every five feet. The food there is awesome and cheap.
Too cute is definitley right though with the asian grocery stores and the veggies from there are not only cheap but so awesome, better than the crap you have to root through at the grocery store.
Also: ramen noodles are key. the 10 cents a pack thing isn't unheard of now they have like prepackaged 10 packs for like 99 cents. Thats a bargain and one bowl is definitley filling. If you're not concerned about your sodium intake Ramen is where its at. (Try the Oriental Flavor, those are bangin'!)

This is the same problem for me as well. I love Denny's but there isn't any near me in New York (that I'm aware of). The only time I get to go there for their breakfast is when I go out to visit my girl in Jersey.

Maybe the Denny's in Jersey and CT are different than the ones we had back in PA. The one that has since been torn down was always a great hangout but the food always gave us the runs, the service was awful, the coffee was cold and we found a few pubes int he one platter the one time. That was just beyond nasty and there were more than a few times we were on the customer complaint lines.
I was always a big fan of the Shoney's Breakfast for $2.99 or even the breakfast buffet for $5 I think it used to be. There was nothing like the scrambled egg mold that you just kept going back for more and more and more on. The grits, the sausage patties and tons of bacon on there was awesome as well. I don't think there are any around here though. It's a southern thing.

The Denny's near me was knocked down in favor of a "Coming Soon" Harley dealership. Yeah, we've been waiting for you to build the damn thing for years.
In college, we were at the Albany Denny's nightly. We'd walk in the door and the waitress would bring us our drinks and tell us our food was already ordered. Ah, those were the days.
I just checked the Denny's Restaurant locator and I'll be damned if I drive all the way up to Fishkill for the nearest Denny's. http://www.dennys.com/

Oh my gosh! That totally reminds me of driving down to Florida with my grandparents every summer when I was little. We would always stop at South of the Border, Shoney's and Waffle House. I could go for some chicken and waffles right now acutally. I still think we have the Shoney's bear mascot toy floating around somewhere as a dog toy. Damn, I'm starvin' from this thread!

as a student, ramen noodles were a staple. i could buy a pack of 20 for $2 on sale. also, i would go to farmers markets every week. all the fruit and veggies were fresh and cheap. a lot of the stuff was $1 a bag or pound. they even had a farmers market outside of school every thursday.
