View Full Version : Obscure Welcome Back Kotter

I was watching TV Land at about 12 last night. They were showing this obscure episode of Welcome Back Kotter with no Kotter and no Barbarino. The teacher was a woman. I had no idea there were episodes without Kotter or Travolta.

On top of that, it was apparently "a very special" epidode, where Horshack developed a drinking problem and took on a whole new personality. It was supposed to be so dramatic, but the acting was horrible. The guy who plays Horshack (Ron Pallilo) was trying so hard to be James Dean in "Rebel Without A Cause." It was bizarre.

I watched the whole thing (all 30 minutes). I don't know why, but seeing this obscure episode for the first time, with Horshack rebelling & throwing punches, spooked me out.

I vaguely remember that episode... doesn't Horschack end up hurting his mousey little girlfriend, or something, which then makes him realize he has a problem?

The chick teacher was, I believe, Julie Kotter, Gabe's wife. Gabe Kaplan had a dispute with the show and left; I think he came back for an episode or two at the end of the series.

Barbarino left the show after the first or second season. He was replaced by a lame-ass southerner named Beau LeBerre, or, as I call him, Ted McGinley-lite.

He should've done some of that against Screech in Celebrity Boxing.

Exactly, he gets into a fight and slugs her by accident. She's knocked unconscious, but when she wakes up, all is well...not a scratch on her. She's not even pissed.

The chick teacher was, I believe, Julie Kotter, Gabe's wife.

Actually it was a black woman.

Sorry, all chicks look the same to me. ;p

That's right, Julie ended up working in Woodman's office, or something like that.

It was only the last season without Travolta and Kaplan.

Travolta was off doing his saturday Night Fever- thingy.

I'm pretty sure PEACHY is right and Kaplan's wife was a substitute teacher on the show toward the end.

from tvparty.com

In 1978, Della Reese was brought in as the 'substitute teacher' for Gabe Kaplan when he left Welcome Back Kotter over a salary dispute. The show was on its last legs anyway, John Travolta ended his sporadic appearances a year earlier and took most of the show's ratings (and charm) with him. Della's character was left to fend for herself against a class of aging sweathogs. The show died at the end of the season with Gabe Kaplan and the individual sweathog's careers withering soon after.
