...I spent all day today, and will spend all today tomorrow, scoring a standardized test that quite a few of you may have taken.
And oh my god, things do NOT look good.
MAY have taken is actually true = Confidentiality Agreements Up the ASS = all I am saying is one of the questions I was grading dealt with:
heating two cubes a metal, one weighing 1 kg, and the other weighing 2 kg.
If someone asked a human being to give a SHORT, reasonable answer as to WHY, if you heated the two cubes with the same amount of heat energy, the one with a mass of 1 kg would start to glow before the 2 kg one.
It's a simple enough Q: WHY?
I can't say the results, but...
maybe some people can restore my faith in the future by answering.
Fancy science answers to simple questions = dumb
Simple science answers = more gooder

one has less mass therefore less matter for heat to travel through

Ron and Fez were the last hosts purged from the WNEW-FM hot talk era, and ever since they left their fans have been trying to get some station to bring them back to town.

how is this question, at least the relevance of it, in the small portion you graded (which certainly does not represent a majority of high schoolers across the country), indicitive of all the high school classes for '04, '05, & '06 being dumb?

The smaller one will burn faster because everyone knows short things have bad tempers.

Excellent point. And I agree.
And if there is blame to spread around, it's not the students.
But sadly, since leaving the Big Money of high-school teaching, I've been grading standardized tests in all subjects from 4th to 12th for approaching a year. Not a lifetime, given.
Having said that: the test people would have taken
smaller
less mass
less weight
less matter to heat
fewer atoms
energy transferred faster
and a few dozen others...
And under half, well under can give an answer.
Perhaps a second example: for a 4th Grader:
You buy a book that costs $3.57. You pay for it with a $5 bill...
What follows is a three-part question:
a. How much change do you receive.
Id tell you b and c, but it doesn't really matter for the 50% that could not answer part a, such that that they could go on to parts b and c.
ps: They had calculators.

my quick hack shot before I read the other answers -
1 kg block has less mass (read as molecules) than the 2kg block - so each molecule absorbs more heat (read as kinetic energy) in the 1kg than the 2kg - the 2kg having more molecules, spreads the same amount of heat across more molecules, so each one gets less of the energy, hence each one heats up less, with a given amount of heat. It would take more heat (in this experiment, it would take longer) to heat up to the same temp.
You buy a book that costs $3.57. You pay for it with a $5 bill... ps: They had calculators.
sad..... (I went back and added this comment)

This is shocking news considering yours truly just got out of high school and the class of 2003 had the best national average on the SATs in history.

I can't believe the test takers could not answer the $5 question. Now I am very frightened indeed.

I agree. It's not the students. And in my perfect world, you'd be out of a job, because there would be no standardized tests for you to grade.
SAT's should die a quick death.
Class rankings should die a quick death.
Our educational system is broken.
I'm going to home school my kids hopefully, but it's not for everyone.
