I can't believe I'm posting this, but it's freaking me out. I'm hoping someone in this menagerie of yahoos has experienced this.

Ok, last Saturday I woke up to find my left big toe nail bruised and painful. Considering I was feeling no pain at the Crankcase show, my only assumption is that someone stepped on my foot.

Anyhoo, it's been getting better but tonight I needed to run to the corner drug store so I pulled on a pair of sneakers without socks. About 20 minutes ago I noticed my left toe nail was bleeding. I lightly pressed on the nail and blood squirted out. It's not painful, it just feels wierd, and it seems to look less black under the nail.

I'm going to clean it, use Neosporin, and wrap it in gauze.

Anyone out there ever have a bruised toe nail? Bueller?

I'm sorry, couldn't resist. Spurting blood is usually not a good thing. Could it be possible that you now have a variation of an ingrown toenail?

I have had a couple of toenail injuries, oddly enough. As long as the blood isn't trapped you are fine. Just treat it like any open cut. If its serious, your toenail will eventually fall off and a new one will grow in its place. Be careful when pulling on socks and things like that. Or you could just speed the whole thing up and rip the bitch off, then a new will definatly be comming :)

Ok, thats really gross. But it makes me wonder. Are toe nails, or even fingernails really, even necessary anymore? When was the last time mankind NEEDED them? Sure, sometimes it's nice to have a fingernail, but as the progress of man is concerned, are they a natural necessity? They just seem to be nuisances to modern day men and women. Shouldnt they have gone the way of the tail?

Sushi is right...chances are you just bruised yourself under the nail and it is working it ways up and out (the excess blookd that is) It has happened to me on both my feet AND myhands. It is kind if like a blood blister. Doctors pop it by drilling a hole into the nail and letting the blood drain out. It also happens when you bang your toe into something..like the corner of the bed.
Best idea you have is clean it and just wrap it up. If you are feeling no pain that is a good thing..but just check for discoloration when you clean it. If you see it changing to a darker color then call the Dr. immediately.
And to answer your question CTP...toenails help in the support of the toe itself. The nail is not only used for protection but for gripping and also it helps strengthen the ends of the feet.

They just seem to be nuisances to modern day men and women.

which is why women pay $30/week to get new acrylics and other happy fun shit done to them.

Onychodystrophy - Rams Horn Nails

Abnormal thickening of a nail can occur following trauma to the nail root (matrix).
Trauma to the nail root can be acute, such as a heavy object falling on the toe. Nail root
damage can also result from repetitive micro trauma, such as a use of a tight fitting shoe
or one with a shallow toe box, used on long hikes or playing tennis.

Typically the nail will turn black and blue due to bleeding under the plate. If painful, the
underlying blood should be drained by burning a hole through the nail plate. This can be
performed by your local podiatrist.

Following such trauma, the nail root will go into shock. A new nail plate will begin to
grow and may push out under the old nail. The old plate usually falls off in two to three
months.

If this trauma also damages the nail root, the newly formed nail can grow in an abnormal
direction, and or become markedly thickened. The injured nail can even curl up and
over into the end of the toe. Because of its appearance this deformity is termed a Rams
Horn Nail (see photo).

Traumatic nail deformities are not reversible. Treatment of deformed nails involve
either trimming the nail or permanently removing the nail root (matrixectomy).

Try to pick up a dime without a thumbnail and you'll realize their value. Toenails protect the fleshy part of your toes from damage. Sure, it's only slightly so, but it's better than having a big ole chunk o' flesh out there waiting for a brick to fall on it.

As far as medical advice goes, that sushi girl is right.

I've had it.

And this is semi-gross, so if you're eating, stay away...

I was trying to kick the crap out of my younger brother when I was 16 and chased him into his room, whereupon he slammed the door shut before I could grab him...right over my foot. Not INTO it...OVER it. Slammed the nail right back into the toe. The trauma basically led to what Alice talked about...looking all bruised and swollen. The problem with mine was that the blood underneath the nail (Which causes it to turn all purple and black) couldn't drain, so it just caused me agonizing pain. I can't describe how horrendous the hurt was. The doctor ended up having to puncture the nail with a superheated needle. The pressure from the blood had been so great that as soon as poked a hole through the nail, the blood shot across the room a good 5-6 feet. So consider yourself lucky that the blood is draining on its own. Once that happens the nail will fall off (As mine did) and a new one will grow back. Of course, mine grew back at a weird angle and I had to have it "re-shaped" to avoide really awful hangnails, but that's a story for another day...

and essentially fingers and toes without nails are open wounds. I bite my nails all the time and it does also make picking things up a problem (on a flat surface it takes me a good minute to pick coins up). But mostly the finger and toenails protect from infection.

and I found Uma Thurman's feet repulsively man-ish in Kill Bill. :)

Dweeb.

TOOTSIE UPDATE!

The blood under the nail drained off, but it's still a little "oozy"; instead of blood a little bit of clear liquid (like what fills a blister) comes out. I'm just hoping the nail doesn't fall off.

If it does, then you can all point and laugh at skidmark for having a girlfriend with a deformed toe.

I was in Colorado snowboarding and I went out one night drinking and got really retarded because no one told me that you have to drink less at high altitudes. Anyways I stumbled my way back to the condo and when I tried to snowboard the next day I was in excruciating pain. Turns out my whole big toenail was a purple bruise. I have no recollection doing it (isnt alcoholism fun!!). my nail didnt fall off and I had to wait like a whole year for it to grow out so i had a normal toenail. Goodluck dahlin, i recommend lots of toenail polish for awhile, then no one knows!
