While everyone is still talking about O&A and how wrong it was to broadcast butt sex from St. Patrick's Cathedral, what about the hypocrisy of the Catholic League? The only reason they didn't approve of the broadcast was because this time the sex in church was between two consenting adults, and not a fag priest and some little boy with his cassock over his head.

This subject IS timely, trenchant even. Consider that there have been three incidents of sexual abuse of boys by employees/priests of local parishes in my catchment area alone (I don't know what the Church would call it, Diocesan area?) that have made the papers in just the past month.

Now we have an ailing Pope who has stacked the College of Cardinals with like-minded conservatives who remain out of touch with their flock. JPII is responsible for all but sixteen of the one hundred and twenty three members of the COC, almost guaranteeing that his successor will share his hard line stance on issues most Catholics aren't very catholic about.

That means more recalcitrant red hats who will avoid initiating a dialogue that would include progressive solutions to the real threats the Church is facing. That means more blind eyes at queer guys who can't get married and enjoy the rights of "traditional" male/female partnerships.

Reprehensible abuse scandals involving children continue to be revealed and continue to take place while a detached Vatican takes more steps to further promulgate a conservative dogma that has alienated millions. JPII has done a lot of wonderful things during his papacy, but has concurrently reinforced his adamantine positions on birth control, allowing priests to marry and even better, allowing women to be priests.

Would these changes create a new Catholic Church that is no longer Catholic? I suggest one that will survive and thrive. Vatican II and I did not create a new Church. Now a new Bishop of Rome is needed to lead the Church out of scandal and back to the apolitical, inclusive, and non-myopic tenants that Jesus taught. Jesus transcended issues of power and politics and focused on peace, love, and understanding. Yes, accidents will happen, and the scandals surrounding Roman Catholicism can be found in all other religions. But as a curious onlooker I view the next papacy as a hinge in the history of Catholicism and an opportunity to move the RCC out of a period of crisis not seen perhaps since the days of Martin Luther. Jesus' aim was and is true. What happened?

My father is Catholic. I am a product of a mixed marriage. The principal "dogma" taught by my parents was not inculcated through some out of touch old guy telling me how to lead my life. I had parents who instilled strong values to the best of their ability and led by example.

If I had a God or Gods to pray to I would pray to that being or those beings for this change to happen in my lifetime. Not for me. For my friends who were abused by priests, the closeted non-pedophile/pederasts who live their lives as a lie, and the many wonderful men and women who grapple with the thought of being a sinner in their eyes of their religion because they use birth control or have premarital sex.

The election of a new progressive Pope unencumbered by Opus Dei zealots just might mend the schism between liberal and orthodox Catholics.

In the meantime, to those 99.9% of you who are good people under the eyes of your Catholic God, please pray for my nonna (who is in Heaven if there is one.) She wore a locket with a picture of her Patron Saint, Saint Anthony of Padova, every day of her life (and made me kiss it when I was a boy.) Please pray for my Uncle Chris, who is currently in the ICU at St. Vincent's hospital.

As for me, I'll continue my quest to find any modicum of fact that can refute my existentialist philosophy. If I don't and I am wrong, I guess I'll wind up somewhere between the Gate of Hell and Circle 1. (I still have some time. I am, after all, only midway through my life's journey.)

The Pope is ailing.

Wouldn't it be great if after the black smoke turned white, the Camerlengo stepped out onto the balcony of the Vatican, shouted "Habemus papam!" and the new pontiff appeared and he or SHE greeted the masses and blessed a waiting world with a message of inclusiveness?

I assassin down the avenue.

Man, I need to be brought up to speed...you mean because .2% of priests diddled or covered up a horrible, on going kid touching scandal, that it's then wrong for people to be upset that a place of worship, and a place that brought a lot of comfort to believers and non-believers after 9/11, was disrespected in the name of a radio stunt?

Stupid Catholics!

Don't they know that radio stunts RULE! Especially ones sponsored by beer companies that encourage illegal activity, like sex in public!!

Big stupid dumb hypocrites!

Shouldn't it be "The Catholic League is hypocritical" or "Members of the Catholic League are hypocrites"?

Bible Man was my favorite member of the Catholic League.

First, correctly identify a few things here.

The Catholic League and the Catholic Church are two different entities.

The League is a bunch of jackasses, who got O&A cancelled because they are press sluts. Remember, did anyone see enraged catholics taking it to the streets in big-ass rallies? No. Donohue got O&A cancelled over a series of faxes and press releases, along with him being on all the news shows because August 2002 was a slow news month. Period. In fact, I daresay that the League is almost as good as a talking head (with nothing to back it up) than PETA.

And don't get me started on PETA.

If Infinity hadn't slapped a gag order on O&A, and actually tried to defend them, this would have blown over.

Remember, Donohue tried to take on Disney and failed.

I went over this dialogue before, but the Catholic Church and the Catholic League don't exactly go hand in hand. William Donhoue thinks he speaks for the Church, when he really doesn't. The Church speaks for itself straight out of Vatican city.

Are the catholic league hypocrites? No.

Are they asshole press-sluts that amount to a lot of hot air? Yes.

I'd call it a mixed success. He's given Miramax plenty of good scares.
