I have a feeling that when the fires and smoke are this visible from SPACE, you have a serious problem.

After Sebastian Junger wrote 'The Perfect Storm' he published 'Fire' a collection of stories he had published. The main one centered on him living with the smokejumpers and firefighters who use bulldozers, chain saws, even shovels to stop these things.

And these things meaning the fires, and he goes into this in an amazingly scientific way with wood dryness and how these people fight it by dozinf and burning lines: the fires have killed many fighters in the past, caught in the field. They couldnt even outrun it; under the right conditions the firewall, and the heat can travel at something like 40 mph or some rediculously fast numbers. Thats not wind, that's trees exploding from the internal moisture as the wall of flame comes at you.

Sheeesh...

What disturbs me most about that pic is not the smoke, but that you can see the actual FIRES from space. Jeez.

Yah Hbox that what i meant; those 'little' dots of red = 1,000s of acres.

And imagine the knock on the door: 'You are coming with us, gather up what you can carry in 2 minutes. Everything else stays, you have to come with us. Now. No time.'

And then to return not to a house that is fire damaged or burnt down...it's gone. The fire field can carry enormous hurricane-strength winds too, and some people return to a patch of scarred dirt where their home used to be.

reminds me that people on the space shuttle(?) or space station were able to see the smoke from the 9/11 WTC fires...

i heard today this fire got started by a person lost in the woods who started a fire to signal for help...

I saw on the news the other day a fire tornado. It came very close to the television crews. Sucks.

My uncle and aunt in Cali are spraying the trees with water around their house everyday with the hose. Like that's going to help! And they're both Doctors- you think that they would know better. Guess not.

At this very moment I have a "LASER" circling 5 miles abover the surface of the Earth. On my command, this "LASER" will commence firing at the West Coast of the United States. It's purpose is twofold. It will leave the state of California a burnt, smoldering wasteland and cut it completely away from the rest of the country effectively crippling the entertainment industry. That is unless the studio heads are willing to pay me an exorbitant fee.

Since the Golden State will be left floating like an abandoned raft in the Pacific Ocean, I have named this "Operation Come Sail Away".

Have there been any estimates on how long the fires will burn and the total area that will be affected?

Please don't take this the wrong way but.....

Right after 9/11 when everyone was speculating that the terrorism would continue, everyone was guessing what would be next. Some would say watch the bridges, while others would say that we have to be aware of those around us because 'the terrorists could be your neighbor.'

Well, it was my contention that they would do something very unnexpected so I started to think of other means that they could use to attack citizens of the USA. Since they are using people that are already in this country they could do a number of things. I came up with two:

1) Set a large number of forest fires in a bunch of different areas on a given day.

2) Find railroad tracks that go unattended for hours and damage them to try to derail a bunch of trains on a given day.

IMO: either one would cause panic

I am in no way suggesting this was terrorism but when I first heard what was going on there was a little part of me that was suspecting more to come.

HAHAHAHAhahahahaha! How naive of you to think that you are looking at the "fires"! As you can see from the higher resolution photo, the "fires" are actually just red lines around areas that indicate where the fires are located, not the actual fires themselves.

HAHAHAHAhahahahaha!

(anyone here can make me a nice sig pic?)

Accually, Douchy McDouchdouch, on the small pic you can see the fires, but on the larger pic, they outline where the fires are.

I just checked again, "SatCam" - care to change your opinion? Those are not fires, they are red outlines.

Upon close inspection I believe that is correct. Plus as far as I know you wouldn't be able to see fires like that from satellite imagery. I could be wrong, but I think that's the case.

Al Queda and Fires? (http://209.157.64.200/focus/f-news/954839/posts)

Heard of this story on the Savage Nation....Who knows? This certainly is within the realm of possibility!!! If I were a terrorist, a large, dry forest near populated areas would be awfully tempting to me!!!

I was talking to someone at work about this today...not about the Savage Nation thing, but that this may be the work of Terrorists. Especially in light of the recent multiple bombings in Iraq by the Red Cross that I believe were the work of Al Quida.

One of the things that struck me was that alot of homes are being destroyed and that those homeowners with their insurance will likely hit the insurance companies hard. Just prior to 9/11 the terrorists had made significant investments in insurance companies and also managed to short the stocks as well. This all sounds like something out of the X-Files I know, but after the Trade Center we cannot let our guard down or not at the very least consider that it could be terrorist related.

So the fires before 9/11, and after 9/11, but before THESE fires...terrorism as well?

I wasn't saying that at all, just that for anything that happens to this scale there needs to at least be considered the possibility that it's the work of someone malicious.
