I was just wondering if anyone on the board has Multiple Sclerosis or knows anyone like a family member or friend who has it. I was curious to see. Thanks.

Ron and Fez were the last hosts purged from the WNEW-FM hot talk era, and ever since they left their fans have been trying to get some station to bring them back to town.

My friend Cheryl recently died from it. She suffered for many years and was lucky enough to have a great caregiver. She was also an activist for Medical Marijuana in NJ :NextPlayVideo (http://www.nextplayvideo.com/)

my mother-in-law had it, she recently passed away due to other complications after a stroke but the ms was a contributing factor to the decision to remove a feeding tube.

it first starting affecting her around 1980 where she had to use a wheelchair. from what i understand it either affects the brain or the muscles(TooCute could add alot more info or a search on the Web) and for her it was the muscles.
She did well until 1986 when she suffered a 24hr stroke. Before this stroke she could transfer herself to a portable potty and feed herself but afterwards she lost the strength to lift herself and her hands had weakened and began to shake.
She went into a Nursing Home later that year. From 1986 thru 2000/2001 she pretty much stayed in the same condition but then began to lose even more strength. She could not feed herself and her speech was very low and she rarely spoke. Her memory was fading and struggled to remember her own childrens names.
What a Saint, she never once complained and she always smiled. She had the softest facial skin and the prettiest rosy cheeks.
After the recent stroke she lost her ability to swallow. there was no mobility in her body except her eyes. She had to go on a feeding tube and according to the doctors there was little if any chance that she would ever be able to swallow.
Obviously the toughest decision a family has to make, starve your Mom to death but in reality, that's what it is.
They made it and she went into the Hospice Ward or floor and i believe it took approx 7-10 days. They provide morphine to stop the pain that coincides with the organs shutting down.

I have it, and it affects your brain and your muscles and your spine. I've been paralyzed, in one leg, I've been partially blind in one eye. It sucks when your dad has to carry you to the doctor. But i'm doing alright now, but I was just wondering.

Sorry to hear that. My friend Cheryl had MS for MANY MANY years. (30-35 years) She died from complications. I'll find out exactly what from if you want. You can totally be treated and live a comfortable life. Keep up with your therapy and eat right. You might be alittle young for pot but it sure helped my friend. (she didn't smoke it, but used a few drops of a "cannabis tincture" under her tongue) Best of luck to you budday.

MS? No problem!

Well, here's another fantastic example of how stunningly little we really know about how our bodies really work.

MS covers a whole family of specific diseases, do you have any specifics on it?

Because things like Lou Gehrig's Disease aka ALS aka Amyotrophic Lateral Schlerosis; even Polio aka Poliomyelitis fall in the same family; even though they are of course, quite different in effects.

Here's the weird things; people think there is something wrong with the nerves, and it not the actual nerve. The long part of a nerve [axon] has a 'sheath' covering of Myelin.

The person who can figure out why the Myelin around the nerves degenerates and harden, and why it affects mostly the Central Nervous System [hence the difficulty in your leg and eye] while often sparing the peripheral nerves? They will become one of my Gods.

Jonas Salk is a God to me. between him and Sabin they nailed the fucker. Nailed Polio to the fucking wall. I mean this was a triumph that had people like me dancing in the streets.

Before the sub-thread starts on the harm done, the people who caught polio due to the immunizations, and current debat on the topic let me say this. The reason half of us are walking is because of the vaccines. We sent Polio down the fucking stairs; yes this pisses me off, because it's making a comeback, but immunization in this century, almost completely irradicated a disease that crippled and took the lives of untold numbers. I'm guessing some here never heard of an Iron Lung. My mother worked them as an RN. She was there, giving the immunizations as the cameras fired and made some Newark paper I have somewhere.

There is a mountain somewhere made up of iron lungs and cruthes. And Salk stands on top of that mountain.

Sheesh, I get a little crazy.

But here we have what seems a simple thing. The Myelin Sheath around the nerves start to show lesions, and hardening. Figure out how to stop that, or reverse, it, and I will run naked through the streets kissing everyone i see until i'm locked away.

People with MS run the gamut. Seems to me you are doing just fine. My friend Kim found she had it when she was around 25. I can't even fucking imagine getting that call. You're stronger then me that's for sure.

As for being carried? If a person can't carry another human being that needs assistance, that person is not a human being.

You may think you have a handicap. That's probably because: You have a Handicap.

Welcome to the world of Misfit People. We ALL have handicaps. Some, for some reason, are looked down upon, and others are actually admired.

Who was the Yankee pitcher who threw that no-hitter?? Shit I'm blanking, but he threw a fucking no-hitter in Pinstripes. Put ya in the Books, baby.

Of yeah; he only has one hand. Watching him pitch; how can ANYone say he has a handicap?

Well he does, and we all do, and Nature is Cruel. But Fair. So we do the best we can.

And know this folks; irrespective of what you might think about it, even if you completely oppose it, fine. But every single solitary one of us has benefited enormously from the testing on Mammals, Primates, and yes, even humans, of an entire slew of vaccines for an entire slew of diseases that all we will ever know of is reading about them somewhere.

Thank You!
Gracias!

And here's some numbers, why i tend to go batshit when things medical come up:

From Unicef/WHO:
Medical Cases of Polio 1988: 350,000+
Medical Cases of Polio 2001: 483

Polio is MY BITCH.

Hey Keith are you able to hear the "Ron & Fez" show? Also, did you like arcade games from the late 70's, 80's and 90's?

And I could hear ron and fez if I wanted to, but I'd have to get it from the computer and my computer is slow(even if it is only 2 years old). But what does either have to do with MS? Just wondering.

And Mike, My body is cool and reproduces the myelin. I guess because I'm young. Or maybe I'm a super hero! You can call me MS boy! With the power to fall down all while enjoying life!

That is the attitude of people who move mountains.
Yet another thing science is clueless about, but theyre catching on, is how utterly essential the healthy mind-body connection is, especially in matters like these.

You rock.

This stuff slays me, I had tears in my eyes before writing about Polio. I've taught kids in wheelchairs, and the final move, in an emergency? you carry the kid. I'd be honoured.

There are things we can change and things we cant. We can't be perfect, but we can chose to serve perfection. Our brains can do the most amazing thing, of all brains that exist on earth: We can change ourselves.

The power of this can not be over-estimated. I lived in a Chemo Office with my Dad in the early weeks. Platinol; a fucking steamroller of a chemo drug. Horrific. Fucking Poison. I mean there they are, injecting my father with stuff labeled with about 5 different types of Skull and Crossbones-type Alerts. Fucking Marvelous. And you sit for 4-6 hours. Lovely day for the dad, eh? [eyeroll]

But lemme tell you; even with many of the agressive cancers: There are some people who just refuse to let the Cancer affect them. Just utterly refuse to let it affect them.

Now, does it always work? No. Many die. But people with that attitude are the ones who make it through chemo without quitting [many do, they just say fuck this shit I'd rather die] and then they go into remission. Or they live at a higher Quality for a longer time. And some fold up, and die. With cancer? I can't fault either decision, as I do not havce that Experience.

Taught a kid who had a major cancer at 8 when he was in my 10th grade Chem at age 15. One of the strongest kids in the class; physically and mentally.

There are, as Stephen King called it in a short-story, 'Survivior Types'. I worked in a hospital for a year, doing echocradiography; heart ultrasound. This is not an ER thing, but sometimes a scan is needed in the ER, and there are people who walk into ERs in such fucked up shape they shouldnt be alive, much less alert and walking.

Some go into shock and die from fright. Some get 3 entry stomach entry wounds; the absolute worst place, and theyre like 'excuse me, um i think i was shot' as he holds his intestines in with his hands.

It's weird. My miniscule medical experience showed me; some people, actually most, die hard. They do not go easy. I dont mean pain or sadness; I mean the human body withstands some fucking horrific abuse heaped on it by modern society; guns, machinery, trains.

Example: the movie cliche where the guys legs are blown off and all he can say is 'hey, i cant feel my legs; feels weird.' My father had that conversation several times when flying in Korea, evac-ing guys who, 2 hours ago, had legs, and then stepped on an anti-personnel mine. And they are so pumped full of morphine, and should be in horrific shock from blood loss alone, but the guy strapped in the stretcher is alert, and saying wow this is weird i forget what happened, my feet are numb, where are we going?'
