So, whatta you think? This guy has undeniably been the best closer in the game for the last 6 or 7 years... And in this year's postseason pissed in the mouth of anyone (I admit, including me) who said he was losing his edge. He solidified this in Game 7 against Boston. Another 2 or 3 seasons like this, do you think he could be on his way to Cooperstown?

There is no question he's a Hall of Famer. If he never played another game, he should still be in the Hall. His postseason credentials are enough.

HBox said it perfectly, Mo is without a doubt a HOF'er. There's no need for this to be up for debate.

If his career ended today he would be a first ballot hall of famer without question.

man i don't understand how this would even be a question, especially for a Yankee fan. He's probably the best closer ever, and if not, the best postseason closer ever.

Then I'll decide.

Thanks.

The Goose isn't in, and neither is Sparky Lyle, and I don't believe Lee Smith is either, also we'll have to see how Eck does when he comes up for consideration....he'll get in...but not immediately, the position of relief pitcher is something the HOF has to come up with some credentials for...

Is Rollie Fingers in the Hall of Fame? Was he a reliever?

Heck if Phil Neikro can get in, why not Mariano? Even though old school relievers back in the day used to go more than 1 inning. What's the criteria for a relief pitcher to get in the HOF anyway? And how does it affect the relievers players today with the position being specialized.

Wow Goose isn't in, and neither is Lee Smith.

How bout Dave Righetti- is he a HOF?

Niekro was a starter before he became a reliever, and he pitched for like 25 years at a high level..remeber he had the most wins after age 40 until Clemens passed him...

Righetti is also not in....

Forget it...

What fun is a topic called "Mariano Rivera WILL Be In The Hall Of Fame" ???

If I open it up for debate, there's always that chance I can get some asshole Red Sox fan or just a Yankee-hater to say "No, he sucks."

And it doesn't even take THAT... Just look at this interesting dialogue between mdr and El Mudo. There's some good points in there.

I mean, I understand it's pretty much not even up for debate, but honestly... Why start a topic simply stating a fact? BOORRIING! Posing it as a question provokes more inspired posts, more resourceful replies, and stronger opinions. This thread is ultimately an homage to Mariano.

There, I opened the board up to my RonFez.Net Posting Playbook. Just don't steal my top secret "Bob 'n Weave" Plan.

Absolutely. Quite possibly the best closer of all-time.

I don't know about that....maybe in the area of specialized relievers (damn that Tony La Russa) he's a lock......but if Eck and Smith don't get in, then it ain't no lock......Wow Thurman Munson not in (but then his career was cut short.......if winning championships was a criteria...I'd vote for Bucky Dent and Willy Randolph. Are they in?

Is Dan Quisenberry in?

It'll all get back to how long it takes Lee Smith and Eck to get in....theyll set the standards for relief pitcher. I mean, in the game now any dope can go and get 40 saves in a given year for a while, its really not that hard to do.

And here's another question I'll pose....Would we even be talking about Rivera if he didn't play for the Yankees and was on TV every single weekend? Smoltz and Gagne have been just as good if not better the last couple of years on worse teams. Gagne was so dominant this year, he may get the Cy Young and some MVP consideration

And itll be an absolute joke if Jeter gets in, Ill admit I hate the Yankees, but the guy has declined steadily every year since 1999

He's helped because of the Yankees, but its not because they get him on TV every weekend. It's because they get him in the postseason every year. And you can't penalize him for that. Let's just be clear, Rivera's getting in mainly because of his performance in the playoffs.

Smoltz might get in, but that's because of both his starting and his closing. And he's been great in the playoffs as well.

And lets just wait on Gagne. Who knows, he might pull a Derek Lowe. Most closers have ridiculouly short careers. That's a big reason they don't get recognition.

My guess is that Roger is gonna go in as a Red Sock, even though he desires otherwise. I dunno though. Just speaking as a Yankee fan, I'd like to see him enter in pinstripes as well, but I have a feeling it won't work that way.

So did Bruce Sutter and Steve Bedrosian.

But I think Goose Gossage really set the standard. While he was closing games for the 1977-78 Yankee championship teams, Eckersley was still a starting pitcher for the Red Sox.

As a Mets fan...

He's in. One of the greatest closers of all time, he should be in. However, I wouldn't be too surprised if he gets the shaft for the first few years simply because it seems really hard for a closer that puts up fantastic numbers to get in.
