do you people want a salary cap in baseball?

i mean football and basketball have them and in my opinion they made both sports better. it allows for a greater distribution of talent. im just curious.

i mean do you think the yankees can win if their was a salary cap?

they should cap salaries to make the league more competitive, but i love the feeling of seeing them lose with a 180 million dollar payroll

I don't know why Yankee haters would want a salary cap. If there was one, Steinbrenner would not be able to spend all the money he has, and therefore would become incredibly, insanely rich. Hell, if there was a cap at $100 million this season, what would he have done with the other $60-$80 million he is paying this year in salary?

But, to answer your question, I think it would be better for baseball if there was some way to curb the Yankees spending. But, hey, I'm a Yankee fan, and I'm enjoying the advantage we have, so I have no real desire for anything to change.

I think it's funny that the Yankee fans won't admit that they win not because of any special home grown talent or coaching but instead because they just steal the best players.

It's fucking criminal that half the teams have no shot at the playoffs on opening day.

-Andy Pettitte
-Mariano Rivera
-Karim Garcia
-Bernie Williams

Yeah, you're right... Those are some pretty big names. The Yankees would be NOTHING if it weren't for the guys above, whom we bought from other teams...

Oh wait, we didn't. Suck on it.

You forgot Ramiro Mendoza. He's not here anymore, but he was a part of the World Series championships.

He started with the Tigers and moved to teh Orioles... but my point is that he wasn't exactly BOUGHT either, yet he still stepped up and played a significant role in the post season.

You yankee haters only remember the last 6 - 7 years of yankee dominance.

I was diehard through the 13 years of Don Mattingly, Dave Winfield, Ricky Henderson, Willie Randolph, Dave Righetti, and the other yankees from the 1980 era.

I didnt become a Met fan in 86. I didnt root for a new team when the yankees came in last place year after year after year.

Steinbrenner decided to pump some money into the team and made it once again be an honor to become a Yankee. You ask any kid in America and I bet you 8 out of 10 will say that they want to be a New York Yankee. It's not cause of the money, it's because of the magic and honor of putting on that pin stripe uniform.

So go right ahead and put the salary cap on, I KNOW with out a doubt we will still have the better team in all of baseball.

Well, first of all, I have nothing against the Yankees. I didn't give a damn about this series once the Cubs were out. But that being said...PantS, I don't think that many kids even CARE about baseball these days, much less are Yankee fans.

Let them make an fucking Cap. Just like always Baseball tries to find away to hurt the yankees. why was the draft really implamented? To hurt us beacuse we were getting all the young players like Mick, Joe D, Gehrig, Rizzoto Yogi ect ect. like MoJo said. You come up to any youngster and they want to be Yankees. so baseball put the draft to hurt us. but that did not stop us. so fine put the fucking cap. We will just build the greatest farm system in the world again and win and win and win just like we always do. if it will shut all you pussy jelouse Yankee haters up bring the cap. And Snoogs like i told u through IM when the Braves stop choking on a huge Dink every year and make it to the World Series like we do. Then you can talk. concentrate on your own loser teams and let the Yankees and Yankee fans worry about the Greatest Franchise in Sports. The New York Yankees. :)

you have raised some fine players, yes. And so have many other teams. The problem is that money does indeed talk, so they leave.

-Derek Jeter-$15.6 mill
-Nick Johnson-$.36 mill
-Jorge Posada-$8.0 mill
-Andy Pettitte-$11.5 mill
-Mariano Rivera-$10.5 mill
-Bernie Williams-$12.35 mill
totaling- near $57 million

That doesn't even leave much room for the others in a cap situation:

-Clemens
-Mussina
-matsui
-soriano (not homegrown for those of you who say he is)
-Giambino
-the rest

You see this is the difference. You have done a great job bringing up the players listed on top. But what really makes you a contender year in and year out is the players listed on the bottom.

On a side note: Tampa Bay Devil Rays combined salaries-$19.63 million

The system seems to be working just fine. Teams with huge payrolls can suck dick. Teams with low payrolls can win the World Series. Take a look:

Guess who had the 2nd highest payroll in baseball this year?

The New York Mets ($117 m)

Guess who had the 10th lowest payroll in baseball this year?

The Florida Marlins ($63 m)

Lack of a salary cap takes chances away from lower income teams? It's ruining baseball? Suck a fat cock.

Case closed.

nothing's a guarantee. But, over time, the teams with the higher payrolls will be in contention way more often than the teams with lower salaries.

If a cap was put into place it doesn't mean that every team would even reach it. It would just curb teams from being out of reach of the others. Don't be so narrow-minded. The mets pay way too much too. This isn't mets vs. yankees. Its only a way to make a professional league more evenly matched, as it should be.

let me ask how you've kept everyone on that list (except Garcia of course, who you did gain in a trade because you had no cap to worry about). Well you keep them because George can pay them inordinate amounts of money. There's no doubt in my mind that half of those players would leave if the Yankees couldn't pay them all All-Star salaries (and don't pull a "Well they are all All-Stars", because All-Star voting isn't based on actual ability, its based on how many front running Yankee fans across the country can vote Jeter in). Johnson isn't being paid all that much yet, but just wait.

And I'm a Mets fan so a cap would hurt me, but I still feel bad that there are 20 teams that can't possibly win the title year in, year out. And I don't care what Steinbrenner does with his extra money (speaking as a baseball fan not as a socialist), I'd just like baseball to not be a mockery.

Read my last post. Only 9 other teams had lower payrolls than the World Champion Florida Salmon.

the nba's soft cap is worthless, and any sport where refs give preferential calls to stars is a joke. the cap did nothing for the game.

the yanks can still win with a cap, just like the mets would still lose. god knows they need the league to stop them from wasting money.

monsterone

honestly, i think a salery cap would take a lot more control out of george's hands. it would make for more long term, wiser investments, rahter than a short term, high priced band-aide.

initially the yanks would be hurt for a couple of years if it was implemented tomorrow. ($70 mil for how many aging players???, an awful farm system, and what real prospects).

but hey, fuck the cap. it gives some sort of reason for mets/ sox fames to bitch about the boys making it farther than their teams.

well I wasn't including the Marlins, they have consistently done pretty well the past three years and obviously by making the playoffs had a chance. I guess it's more like 15 teams. And I can't see how the Devil Rays can EVER get good in a Yankee, and therefore money, dominated division.

and monsterone, after admitting that Mets and Red Sox fans are right, you can't really call the legitimate claims "bitching". "Some sort of reason" is obvioulsy reason enough to convince you.
