300 arrested at Wal-Mart

Workers nabbed on immigration charges; executives facing subpoenas, U.S. official says.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. officials arrested about 300 workers at 61 Wal-Mart stores on immigration charges, a U.S. official said Thursday.

Garrison Courtney, spokesman for the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said the arrests in 21 states were part of a "work site enforcement" effort.

"If a company knowingly hires illegal workers it can be penalized up to $10,000 per person," he said.


Most of the 300 workers belonged to contract cleaning crews, he said.

Some Wal-Mart executives knew of the illegal contract workers and a grand jury will subpoena some of those executives, a U.S. official said.

Officials at Wal-Mart, the world's biggest retailer, were not immediately available for comment.

Punishing the employer, and not the illegal immigrant is the only way to deter this.

Thomas again went to his managers, who did nothing. So he called a Wal-Mart employee hotline. He went to store manager Keri Brown. He complained to the district supervisor.
