Does your dog rub his ass on the carpet? It may be Assworms, but more likely your pet just needs their ANAL GLAND SQUEEZED. At the Vet and at certain Dog Groomers they will perform this service for a small fee. It only takes a few seconds but it makes the dog very happy. First they put 2 fingers around the dogs anus, push in, and squeeze. An awful brown fluid will ooze or squirt out and sometimes it will fly a few feet. It smells horrible so they usually do it in a tub during a bath. I can only describe it as concentrated liquid faeces. This is gross but it's true!!!

My 3 questions are:

How often should it be done and

what are the effects of never doing it since most of us have never heard of such a thing?

Also, how did wild dogs do this without things with fingers around?

Well hopefully if you are a dog owner you HAVE heard of it. I can't imagine why you would have if you aren't though. How often it needs to be done (if ever) will depend on your dog. Usually small dogs need it done more often than big dogs, but some big dogs need to have it done, too (eg my border collie mix needs it done usually about once a month. The lab has never needed it.) Ordinarily the secretions from the anal sacs are excreted when your dog poops, but not always. If your dog has a tendency to scoot around and lick its butt a lot, you might want to have your vet take a look to see if the sacs need to be expressed.
If they aren't expressed, they can get impacted or rupture and get infected, which is obviously bad. Wild dogs don't need this done apparently because I imagine in their case they get to actually use their anal sac secretions to mark their territory, unlike domestic dogs.

When I used to wash dogs, I did a few of these Anal Glands and some other REALLY gross stuff. One time they brought in a bijon who had shit caked on his ass sooo bad that it was an inch thick. I have no idea how the dog was able to crap. It must have been there for a while because when we peeled it off there were maggotts inside. The poor dogs skin was all red and raw underneath AND THE OWNER WAS A DOCTOR which to me is more shocking than ANY of this. Some people don't care about their pets once they get them. Ugh.Ugh..........Ughhhhhhhhh (I get the mental picture AND the mental smell)
