I've been looking for a good book to read. I can't get into anything I have so if you know of any it would be appreciated. Thanks!

What type of books are you into (i.e. biography, non-fiction, fiction, horror, love, history etc.)?

Try anything by Tom Clancy, chronologically. Or John Grisham.

try some william kotzwinkle -- the fan man, hermes 3000 or elephant bangs train .... you can never go wrong with kurt vonnegut or greil marcus ..... the two volume biography of elvis presley by peter guralnick was amazing ..... or grab any david sedaris for laughs .....

Great, great series that's been going on since 1997...fascinating stuff...

And, since it's that time of the decade...

The book that shows the truth is a heckuva lot more exciting than any loopy conspiracy theory.

And for a HILARIOUS read...

if you want a good, simple read he's perfect. I read everyone of his books except for Lullaby and the one about Oregon. So I'd recommend Choke, Survivor, or Invisible Monsters. And obviously Fight Club.

American Psycho is one of the best books I've ever read. It's a lot better than the movie. The Bible Code is a fascinating non-fiction book. It doesn't matter whether you believe it or not, just reading about this shit and even thinking about it being possible is a mindfuck.

you should start the ishmael series by Daniel Quinn....the first two are the best..the third is a bit repeative but worth reading. Start with "Ishmael"
Also anything from vonnegut is good...perhaps "cat's cradle" or "breakfast of champions"....Or "Nine Stoires" by J.D. Salinger. If you are more into fantasy...well comedy/fantasy/satire..try "Reaper Man" by Terry Pratchett...and don't let the jacket cover on that book turn you away..it looks like crap but it really is amazing.

Well, without your response to Kat's question, it's difficult. But the ones with the ragged pages on The Chairman's bookshelf include (some are not recent, but essential reading nevertheless.)

Atonement - Ian McEwan
Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World - Mark Kurlansky
Infinite Jest - David Foster Wallace
Love in the Time of Cholera - Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Darwin's Dangerous Idea: Evolution and the Meanings of Life - Daniel Dennett
The Visual Display of Quantitative Information - Edward R. Tufte
Agape Agape - William Gaddis
The Polar Express - Chris Van Allsburg
Blood Meridian, Or, the Evening Redness in the West - Cormac McCarthy
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values - Robert M. Pirsig
An Unquiet Mind - Kay Redfield Jamison
White Noise - Don DeLillo
Silent Spring - Rachel Carson
60 Stories - Donald Barthelme
The Man Who Ate Everything: And Other Gastronomic Feats, Disputes, and Pleasurable Pursuits- Jeffrey Steingarten
Houseboat Days: Poems - John Ashbery
Wrapped in Rainbows: The Life of Zora Neale Hurston - Valerie Boyd (then read ZNH's Their Eyes Were Watching God)
Great Neck - Jay Cantor (may be of interest to you given the MS character subplot, but this is not Pynchon, Barth or Gaddis)
A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction - Christopher Alexander

Some guilty pleasure pulp includes Demille's The Charm School, The Day After Tomorrow by Allan Folsom and if you haven't read the book, Harris's Red Dragon. I agree that Fight Club was excellent.

The Yeast Connection and Women's Health - William G. Crook is way overrated. Avoid it.

And someone needs to start a thread on The DaVinci Code. The most overrated and historically flawed book of the decade. You think you liked it? Seek out a guy named Umberto Eco. His books are to The DaVinci Code what Johann Sebastian Bach is to Brittney Spears. Wanna read stuff from a great Amherst grad? Seek out David Foster Wallace. I'm currently reading DFW's Everything and More: A Compact History of Infinity. It's everything I had hoped for.and more.

Desdemona: What wouldst thou write of me, if thou shouldst praise me?

Iago: O gentle lady, do not put me to 't, For I am nothing, if not critical.
