You think that Columbia is the only university where animals have plates screwed into their heads, electrodes stuck all over their bodies, etc.? These images, grusome as they are, are all entirely irrelevant to the "torture" claim. It is very difficult to get a permit to do research on vertebrates; you have to fill out a million animal care protocols and forms etc. etc.

If Columbia is violating the protocols for which it was was granted permission to study these primates (and it sounds like it may be possible if primates are being denied pain meds, euthanasia, etc. - but I'm not too familiar with primate research so I'm not entirely certain), then it should be severely fined and kept under closer scrutiny in the future.

However, if this is simply a ploy by PETA (yes, we should believe them to be credible, right?) and a disgruntled lab tech to generate bad publicity for Columbia (Dear GOD! They keep animals in CAGES in a research facility?! You mean, they actually do RESEARCH on these animals?!!!!) because they test on animals (They would prefer human testing, I suppose) then this is ridiculous and I hope that nobody is stupid enough to buy their sensationalization.

Whether PETA likes it or not, animal research is a necessity in many scientific disciplines.

I never said Columbia was the only place this took place. Just another example of the very profitable animal experimentation business. And we are all very naive if we believe that all these "Tests" are strictly for the good of mankind. Abuses of these charities are well documented with repetitive testing and experiments that give at best unreliable results. The video, if released , will tell if these allegations are accurate. I am all for science, but this industry definitely needs to be watched closer. I am well aware of Peta's checkered pass and sometimes questionable motives. (They are constantly embattled with people involved in showing dogs. In fact, they have , in the past, freed crated dogs at dog shows, only to be killed by passing cars) Yet I am still interested in how this turns out because they have , on occasion, exposed legitimate animal cruelty.

Animal experimentation at Columbia and other universities is NOT a "business" and they are not profiting from it, per se. They may gain prestige from having their research published in an elite journal, and by having an impressive resume a researcher might be more likely to get a grant to continue his/her research, but nobody goes into academia to make money.

The same can't be said for companies that actually produce and sell products, but in ths case we're talking about a university.

And we are all very naive if we believe that all these "Tests" are strictly for the good of mankind. Abuses of these charities are well documented with repetitive testing and experiments that give at best unreliable results.

1. What charities?
2. Since we don't know what research this article is referring to (beyond that it involves primates and is in the Health Sciences building), you can not make the claim that the results are "at best unreliable". The implication that you're making is that institutions like Columbia University are engaging in purposeless animal torture. You are the one that is naive if you think that Columbia has the money to waste on research that isn't going to produce results.

The video, if released , will tell if these allegations are accurate.

If it is released to who? The general public? Do you honestly think that the general public has any concept of what is involved with the use of animal subjects in research? Show your general Joe Shmo a photo of a baboon - nevermind a baboon, how about a rat? with a metal plate in its head and they're going to say "OH MY GOD! THAT'S CRUEL!" - that means the allegations are true, I suppose. I've taken shit from people because they thought it was cruel that I killed by breaking their necks with my hands, that I collected their blood by slicing their tails and that I marked them by clipping their ears. The only thing "releasing the video" accomplishes is that it will make it that public backlash might make it that much more difficult for legitimate researchers to do their research for a time while the story remains in the public's collective mind. Far better that PETA give the video to the USDA and allow them to do their investigation in peace.

I am all for science, but this industry definitely needs to be watched closer.

Again, what industry are you referring to? The animal research industry? ???

I am well aware of Peta's checkered pass and sometimes questionable motives.

Their motives have already been exposed by the fact that they gave the video to the media.

Agreed.
