First, I am a Yankee fan. Two, that was a jab towards Major League Baseball. Do you really think Steinbrenner wanted to give away those seats?

Can anyone tell me why Rivera was brought in to pinch hit for Karim Garcia? Garcia's been hot this whole post season, and was already 2 for 2 tonight... Why the hell take him out of the order, only to have Rivera go in and strike out? Is there logic behind this move? Or just stupidity?

Hatred is a very powerful thing. I'm sure lots of Yankee fans (Heckler for one) would be rooting against the Sox if game 7 had turned out differently.

Willis, a lefty, was pitching. They wanted to get the righty-lefty matchup. Still don't make sense, Garcia's been getting hits off the best pitchers this postseason. You gotta leave him in.
And if I see Soriano leading off next game, I will scream.

I kinda figured it had to do with the righty/lefty match-up, but it's still a shitty-ass move. Garcia would've done better than striking out.
And also, did anyone just see that scumbag umpire possibly cost the Yankees the game? Called that WAY INSIDE pitch a strike. They showed the replay... Nowhere NEAR the plate. Motherfucker.

So if the Yankees win it makes the Sox look good? No, it just pisses us off more that wee could have had that chance. Plus people in Boston do not root for any New York team.

That was one of the worst umpires I have ever seen. I couldn't sense any actual consistent strike zone. I could never count on knowing whether a pitch was a ball or a strike. One inning, a pitch two inches off the plate is called strike, the next inning a ball that grazes the plate is called a ball. It didn't cost the Yankees the game, the Marlins were screwed a few times as well.
Soriano is slumping worse than Giambi. His hit one hit tonight was a lucky infield hit. He has done almost nothing since the Twins series. Why is he batting leadoff? Lead off Jeter, move Giambi back to three, and put Soriano ninth.

So the Yankees drop Game 1. Judging by the last two rounds, we're right on track to win the series.
And seriously... Soriano striking out in the clutch tonight is the last fucking chance Torre has to move him. He has to be retarded to keep him at lead-off.

And Clay Aiken singing the national anthem is a coincidence? I don't know how it sounded on tv, but all I heard were boos when his name was announced tonight.
And every year, fox holds seats for the stars of shows they're trying to promote. In '96, Calista Flockhart and Luke Perry had front row seats together.

I am not a Marlins fan by any stretch but I am pulling for them in the series casue of my loathing for the Yankees and the way I saw them not only play all year but how they never GO AWAY! These fuckers are pesky and can play small ball GREAT and it will kick you in the ass when you least expect it. Granted the Marlins haven't played the talent of the Yankees this year although the Cubs weren't exactly Little Leaugers but the Marlins can play some pretty good ball. Somehow I knew they would score in the first cause either Pierre or Castillo would bunt.
Good move keeping Dontrelle in the bullpen. I would hate to see him choke starting again. If Brandon Looper goes in at anytime in this series, it is a guaranteed run or two casue he is a supreme run producing machine.
It really shows that teams that go out and get what they need to fill drooping holes in the line-up, pull through in the end. Mike Lowell was injured on July 31 and he was leading the team and the leauge in Home Runs at the time. 12 hours, 12 HOURS later, the Marlins get Jeff Conine who pretty much single handedly not only wiped the Phillies from the wildcard race but gave them a hell of a defensive and offensive boost.
Should be a good series.

Not that I am too thrilled about it, but I had an inkling that the Yanks were going to lose game one. They were worn out by the Red Sox game. I have a feeling they did not give it their all, and will soon show the Mackerals (sorry..MARLINS) how they really play the fall classic.

I think I'm psychic... I don't know how or why, but about 40 seconds before Matsui hit that homerun, the entire thing played out in my mind... Including the fact that it was on a 3-0 pitch. And it happened exactly as I imagined it. I'm starting to scare myself.
That's one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. You're not allowed to have allegiances to a non-NY team if you live in NY? Some of us didn't grow up here.
That's a good point that I wasn't really thinking of when I made that statement. If you aren't from NY, you have every right to stand by your home team. But if you're a native NYer, you have no excuse (other than being a Met fan). However, you did call what I said stupid, so fuck you.

If you're a Yankee-hater in NY, your ONLY valid excuse is that you're a Mets fan. If not, you're just a traitor to hometeam sports.
that's just stupid. It's only natural to hate a team that wins all the time. I just so happen to be a Mets fan (but only because I hate the Yankees), but I don't cheer for a local team in any other sport. Ravens, Leafs, and Raptors fan. Is it even such a big deal to be "a traitor to hometeam sports"? I never understand people who blindly cheer for a TEAM and not the actual PLAYERS that play for the team. What about the thousands (at least) of Yankees "fans" from out of state that pollute their cities? And what about the fake "fans" of the Yankees even in New York City? I think you need to look around at your fellow "fans" and realize that a team needs all the true support they can get.

that's just stupid. C'mon seriously... Why did you choose to follow those non-local teams? Certainly not because they were LOSING teams when you got behind them. What other reason to cheer for a team if it's NOT that they are from your hometown? And I don't care how many bandwagon Yankee fans there are. I'm not one of them.

well I got behind the Ravens and Raptors in their first years and I did get behind the Leafs when they were really good in 94', but I still follow them now. If anything I'm an anti-front runner because I was ready to ditch the Ravens when they won the Super Bowl. I really don't understand how having a good team feels good to you, I know I was extremely bored the year the Ravens won.

CH, I agree...I have been a Yankee fan since the late 70's when I could comprehend the rules of baseball. When you can root for the Yanks during the Mattingly years, the 80's. When the Yanks sucked all the time...year after year/ to watch the Red Sox make the World Series in 1986 and Wade Boggs win the Batting title year after year while Donnie "The Captain" Baseball was playi8ng his heart out. He could have been traded to a winning team but he stuck it out! (sorry getting off on a I love Don Mattingly rant here) Those were LEAN years brutha!
The Yanks look like nothing will stand in their way. If the Red Sox could not beat the Yanks then the Marlins have NO chance.
Sorry for all those people who think the Yanks will fall like they did to the Diamondbacks...that will NEVER happen.
Let's go Yanks. Take one for the fans and come back to win it in the Stadium!

Justice, I couldn't have put it better myself. I'm a huge Mattingly fan and even now after all these years of World Series victories a part of me feels bad that Donnie didn't get to play on those teams and get the World Series ring he deserves. I'm hoping by the fact that he's been at a lot of these games it's a sign that he'll be a coach next season for the Yankees. Last nights game was great.

abouty the marlins... they got some solid pitching and contact hitting. They really dont need the power since they got juan pieere, and the other guy (lol i forgot his name). Pierre has over 30 stolen bases this season so that makes up for the lack of power hitting in their line up.

Wells and the Yankees were off to a strong start... And we proved once again we have the ability to scare the shit out of you in the 9th inning. Our clutch starting pitcher went down. Had Wells pitched tonight's game, the Yankees would be looking to close it this Saturday in the Bronx. But Wells got hurt, and the Marlins proceeded to cheat to win. That's all there really is to say.
As a natural pesimist, I'm not gonna sit here and hope for a miraculous comeback. I've acccepted the season as over. And if I'm wrong, well then I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I just feel like the World Series should be a true match-up of talent, and the Yankees weren't able to compete tonight because they had no starting pitcher. I can almost GUARENTEE Wells would've won this game. I understand it's not the Marlins' fault he got hurt. I just don't feel like it was the real Yankees vs. Marlins tonight. Tonight's match-up went completely wrong and it's gonna cost the Yanks the series.
Also, I'm a SORE LOSER and I want to die.

I just feel like the World Series should be a true match-up of talent
Ok, dig, I buy that. It should be a true matchup of talent. There is no doubt that the Yankees have the most talent in their lineup and an amazng pitching staff. They also have a $180 Million payroll compare to the Marlins $71 Million. So the Yanks and other teams in the leauge have the cash to go out and buy and in some cases trade for what they need to make the pennant run. Florida went out and did what they needed to do to get the NL Pennant. The Cubs and Red Sox did as well as did the Giants and other playoff contenders. The way I see it is Mr. Steinbrenner has an assload of money from ticket sales, concessions and anything that has the Yanks logo on it. Maybe I am wrong in what he has his cash from but no doubt he has a lot of cash. The Yankees go out and buy what they need to get as strong of a team as possible to make the World Series run.
I am fine with that but I think that other teams should have an opportunity to do the same. looks like that wont happen anytime soon because the MLB Players Association doesn't want a salary cap. That is my only complaint with unfairness. Maybe if a team like the Brewers or the Pirates or even the Royals, if they had as much of a shot getting top notch players those teams among others would be able to make the run at a Championship as well.
Being a fan of sports in general I like to see championship teams built not bought. Not saying the all teams always buy their championships becasue some teams do have a hell of a minor leauge system. Some do not.
Case in point, the 1997 Marlins who not only bought their team for that season and won the World Series but then completely screwed their fan base and dismantled the team withing weeks of winning the title. That is a disgrace. Teams should not be allowed to do that. The rebuilding of the franchise did result in this current Marlins squad though. Interesting how something so bad can turn into something good.
I hope I didn't come off as really trashing the Yanks here as I do like the players they have. It is just the means to get the players I don't like as much. I didn't want to derail this too much.

I don't fuckin' believe it. Mr. Clutch. Mr. Big Game
since when? Wells had one good start in the ALCS. He lost the Angels series last year and he was beat in Game 1 of this series. I think you have to blame this on Contreras. Even if he wasn't expecting to go in that early he should be able to pitch somewhat well. He was crap though, and the Yankee's single weakness was exposed: their crappy bullpen. The Fish win!!!! or it would mean that the Marlins are the better team. If the Yankees lose in 6, like I think they will if they lose at all, then I think the Marlins have to be considered the beat team in the majors. There's no reason to think that the BoSox could've even beat them. And the other three teams that they haven't played will win a World Series when hell freezes over.
The Braves and A's is the World Series on Earth 2 I think.

I think FOX and MLB conspired all along for the yankees to be down 3-2 to increase ratings and to give people a reason to watch thinking the Yankees can lose. It's all a conspiracy.
Watch the yankees win the next 2 and get ready for Ol' Blue Eyes singing the Yankees to another championship and than the world will be right again.

Maybe if a team like the Brewers or the Pirates or even the Royals, if they had as much of a shot getting top notch players those teams among others would be able to make the run at a Championship as well.
I am so friggin' sick of this argument, nearly all of the teams in MLB are owned by filthy-stinkin' rich multi millionaires, they're just not willing to spend any money on thier baseball team, it just goes into the executives pockets.
The Cubs are owned by one of the biggest media conglomerates in the Country, yet they barely spend on improving the team. This Big Market/ Small market shit is Selig's propoganda to get MLB to take money from Stienbrenner and give it to his Precious Brewers.
And you Yankee haters (Met Fans) The WORST thing that could possibly happen is that the Yanks lose, because in the off season Stienbrenner will go completely apeshit, ad another 100M to the payroll and buy EVERYBODY... Lowell, Tejada, Gurrero, Colon, etc... I guaruntee you that if the Yanks lose, they'll all be Yankees next year.
And don't give me that Salary cap shit, because the NFL and NBA owners cheat it on a regular basis, look at the Lakers for god's sake, and btw, of course the Players association doesn't want a salary cap, who gives baseball players big endorsement deals? Arm and Hammer? Viagra? come on... does A-Rod even have an endorsement dael? I know Jeter does, but that seems to be it. Because the media has destroyed baseball as the "national passtime" the players can really only get money from their teams' payrolls
But enought of this rediculous anti-yankee complaint about money, especially by you Met and Red sox fans, who have the 2nd and 3rd highest payrolls, respectiveley.
BTW.... I love the people who complain about the "bandwagon Yankee fans" while they rooted for the Diamondbacks in '01 and the Marlins this year....

I don't really know what to do about the Yankees either. Giambi has been good in the postseason in the past, but he's never gotten this far. Did he underpeform because of the injuries or is he not a cluch guy?
Soriano had some huge, HUGE hits in the playoffs in 2001. Last year and this year he's been awful. Who knows what he'll do next year?
Boone was awful except for one at bat. He was pretty bad in the regular season too. Is he capable of playing in New York?
Who do the Yanks sign? Tejada? He's been awfual in the postseason. And where does he play?
Guerrero? Will he even come? If he does, will he be able to play in NY?
Lowell? He sucked in the World Series. If you sign him, what do you do with Boone?

this came to mind:
Casey At The Bat
by Ernest L. Thayer
The outlook wasn't brilliant for the Mudville nine that day,
The score stood four to two, with but one inning more to play.
And then when Cooney died at first, and Barrows did the same,
A pall-like silence fell upon the patrons of the game.
A straggling few got up to go in deep despair.
The rest clung to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast.
They thought, "if only Casey could but get a whack at that.
We'd put up even money now, with Casey at the bat."
But Flynn preceded Casey, as did also Jimmy Blake;
and the former was a hoodoo, while the latter was a cake.
So upon that stricken multitude, grim melancholy sat;
for there seemed but little chance of Casey getting to the bat.
But Flynn let drive a single, to the wonderment of all.
And Blake, the much despised, tore the cover off the ball.
And when the dust had lifted,
and men saw what had occurred,
there was Jimmy safe at second and Flynn a-hugging third.
Then from five thousand throats and more there rose a lusty yell;
it rumbled through the valley, it rattled in the dell;
it pounded through on the mountain and recoiled upon the flat;
for Casey, mighty Casey, was advancing to the bat.
There was ease in Casey's manner as he stepped into his place,
there was pride in Casey's bearing and a smile lit Casey's face.
And when, responding to the cheers, he lightly doffed his hat,
no stranger in the crowd could doubt t'was Casey at the bat.
Ten thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with dirt.
Five thousand tongues applauded when he wiped them on his shirt.
Then, while the writhing pitcher ground the ball into his hip,
defiance flashed in Casey's eye, a sneer curled Casey's lip.
And now the leather-covered sphere came hurtling through the air,
and Casey stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur there.
Close by the sturdy batsman the ball unheeded sped --
"That ain't my style," said Casey.
"Strike one!" the umpire said.
From the benches, black with people, there went up a muffled roar,
like the beating of the storm waves on a stern and distant shore.
"Kill him! Kill the umpire!" shouted someone on the stand,
and it's likely they'd have killed him had not Casey raised his hand.
With a smile of Christian charity, great Casey's visage shone,
he stilled the rising tumult, he bade the game go on.
He signaled to the pitcher, and once more the dun sphere flew,
but Casey still ignored it, and the umpire said, "Strike two!"
"Fraud!" cried the maddened thousands, and echo answered "Fraud!"
But one scornful look from Casey and the audience was awed.
They saw his face grow stern and cold, they saw his muscles strain,
and they knew that Casey wouldn't let that ball go by again.
The sneer has fled from Casey's lip, the teeth are clenched in hate.
He pounds, with cruel violence, his bat upon the plate.
And now the pitcher holds the ball, and now he lets it go,
and now the air is shattered by the force of Casey's blow.
Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright.
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light.
And, somewhere men are laughing, and little children shout,
but there is no joy in Mudville --
mighty Casey has struck out.

From everything I have read according to a interview in the Star-Ledger last month, Guerrero doesn't want to play in a big market like NY. He is opting to stay in either Montreal or go to Baltimore who has money to spend this offseason and his mother lives there whom he wants to be close to. I hope he stays with Montreal.
Tejada has stated that he wants to come to Philadelphia because his and Jim Thome's agent are the same and the Phillies could use a shortstop. Who knows on that one.
Florida would be smart to tie in Lowell and Castillo if they are smart. Blowing up the team like they did in 97 would be a disgrace.
Oh yeah, if there's anyone who doesn't deserve this, it's Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria. Single handedly ruined baseball in Montreal, ran that team into the ground, whined when he couldn't make money, refused to sell it, and then got a sweetheart deal for the Marlins when he couldn't get a buyout for contracting the Expos. What a lousy bastard.
I forgot to mention this before even as all through the game when his fat face was on the screen I wanted to smack him. I think it is a disgrace what he did to the city opf Montreal and to the Expos. They were this close }{ to getting a new stadium instead of that toilet Olympic Stadium (picture a flea market in Jersey with a huge stadium attached to it. AWFUL!) and the bastard took the money and ran. Now Montreal is in the toilet financially but are managing to stick around for another season. I was at a few games this year and their fans are beyond passionate. Crazy shit.
Is there still any truth to rumours about Pettitte being a free agent after this season?
Where will Don Zimmer go? I hope he gives Steinbvrenner a big fuck you as he leaves.

He is a free agent. And there have been rumors that he wants to play back home in Texas, that he hasn't forgiven Steinbrenner for almost trading him to the Phillies a few years ago, and that Steinbrenner wants to go after a bigger name rather than sign Pettite.
After this postseason, there is no way Steinbrenner will not try to resign him. However, if there is any truth to the rumors taht he wants to play in Texas, it may not matter. But it does seem that he wants to come back.

For the record, I am a Mets fan and knew their crappola season was over in June. BUT, I am also a baseball fan, and the post season was incredible!
I do feal bad for Joe T. He's a good man, and does not deserve the inevetible wrath of boss George.
Take it easy Clarky

Congrats to the Marlins! They played a good game. Who would have thunk that bunting would be so important.
As for the Yanks......stop believing in GHOSTS and hoping they'll come to help you. No wonder they lost.

I only caught the last 4 innings but it was fucking sweet.

Florida Marlins: 2 time World Champions, 0 time NL East Champions.
Even worse...Florida Marlins: 2 seasons with winning records, 2 World Championships.
Congrats to the Marlins & their fair-weather fans...hopefully you can get more than 5,000 people in your stadium to watch the banner raised in April. But with or without fans in your building, you had the most complete and well-rounded team in the Major Leagues in 2003...and you deserve every spoil of victory.

To my fellow Yankee fans: How fucking PAINFUL was it waking up this morning? Seriously, as soon as it popped into my head my heart just sank and I wanted to die. I somehow managed to fall back asleep, but that only lead to that terrible feeling happening AGAIN.

Two points to clarify:
#1. I never said Devils' fans were fair-weather, because they barely show up even in the fair weather...I just said that the vast majority of them know dick about hockey & can't be bothered to buy a ticket.
#2. Suck it.
Have a nice day!

I'm an Orioles fan (possibly the only one on this board), and I just have to say:
It doesn't make up for the fact that my team sucks and will continue to suck for the forseeable future.
It doesn't make up for 26 world championships vs. 3 world championships (at least with the modern incarnation of the team)
It doesn't make up for George Steinbrenner.
It doesn't make up for Jeffrey Maier.
It doesn't make up for the inequity of an astronomical payroll.
It doesn't make up for losing Mike Mussina.
but I'm still glad the Yankees lost.

Any truth to the rumours that Peter Angelos is going to go apeshit with signing in the offseason? That would be really cool to see the Orioles get strong again.

Marlins Sell Championship Trophy to Yankees
(2003-10-26) -- Just hours after their champagne-soaked victory celebration in the decisive game six of the baseball World Series, the Florida Marlins have agreed to sell their championship trophy to the New York Yankees for an undisclosed amount.
"I was a little surprised at the Yankees' offer," said Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria, "but we could use the cash to beef up our roster."
Despite outspending their Series opponent 3-to-1 on player payroll, the Yankees got only five hits and failed to score a run in the 2-0 loss in their home stadium last night. New York started the season #1 in the league with a $150 million dollar annual payroll. The Marlins began with $50 million and a 25th out of 30 ranking.
Florida plays its home games in a reconfigured football stadium before regular season crowds averaging 16,290 -- the third lowest in Major League Baseball. The Yankees average attendance was 42,785 this season -- number one in the league.
"We were humiliated by poor homeless bums," said Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. "But we haven't won 26 championships by being tightwads. I made up my mind last week that the trophy would come to New York one way or another. I consider it a tribute to the population density of this media market."

Haven't heard, but I'm pretty confident that whatever he decides to do will be the worst for the team. Peter Angelos = The Devil.

I take a certain amount of satisfaction knowing Sox fans will suffer much more then Yankee fans this off season.
I think Yankees fans will be suffering more than Red Sox fans because there will probably be a major overhaul in the club house. Steinbrenner will probably making alot more decisions, and trust the front office of the team less...
