just had some mussels marinara... they were the green shelled mussel and they were plump and juicy and not a bit of sand or grit... my co-worker said the green shell mussel is considered a New Zealand mussel...

also had an antipasto italiana, fresh mozz, sharp chunk provolone, proscioutto, tomatas, and roasted peppers with a couple nice slices of raw garlic...

Romeos in Plainsboro has very good food! some other italian places nearby try to give you sliced coldcut provolone in your antipasto, they just slice it thick... but thatsa nogood, it has no flavor, yuck!

That's the green-lipped mussel, Perna viridis. I actually studied it for quite a while. It's actually native to sort of the whole Indo-Malaysian area, but it's been spreading to places like South America and most recently, Florida. It's a problem because it grows much much faster than the native mussel Mytilus edulis (that's the smooth blue one we eat) and so is overtaking the area, sort of like the zebra mussels are doing up here but not as bad. They're also WAY tastier than any other mussel. You can buy them frozen, or you can get them fresh if you have a good fishmonger. Or you can get them if you're me and you study them in your lab :)

Ehh, the zebra mussel has been all over the news for the past 5-10 years. The green-lipped mussel really hasn't been, particularly not around here since it's not an issue up here. I think the water is too cold.
