I know I know; all these re-hased threads, but I'm not sure about this one. I mean I'm sure there was a 'most depressing X' thread or two or 35.
Anyway, by Sad here, I'm not necesarily talking a bad thing. Meaning, I am talking the Sad movie, album, and book you LOVE!
You Know you're gonna cry, or get bummed, or sink into some funk, but you gotta See/Hear/Read it. Again. and Again.
Or the Reverse; something bad happens, and you're already all bummed out, and you're like 'I'm Drunk and Lonely, might as well complete the Hat Trick of misery by watching, listening, or reading this.
These will change. A Lot. But now?
Movie: The Deer Hunter
Album: Right now, it's a song, written by the REAL Piano Man, Hoagy Carmichael, and done by Carly Simon. The very first time I heard it I was sobbing, and I can NOT listen to it and not cry: "I Get Along Without You Very Well (Of Course I Do).
Book: Pet Semetary

There's a song on a Joe Walsh album. I think its on the record with "ILBT"(it's the last song) and it's just piano with ocean & bird sounds. It tears me up, it tears my family up, it tears my up coaches and fans, that's all I can say*sob**sob* excuse me*sob*sob*sorry*sob*sob*

Movie: "The Professional" - Just the fact that Jean Renot doesn't tap Natalie Portman when he has the chance.
Album: Justin Timberlake "Maximum" - The fact that it exists.
Book:The Bible - Everyone going insane and hearing voices and building crazy ass big boats and trying to kill their own sons. It's so sad that the ending's a relief that that all the bullshit's finally over.

Movie - Godfather II.
I'm always depressed as hell whenever I watch this film. Michael ends it as a man having everything...and utterly nothing. And he did it all to himself.
Album - The Manic Street Preachers' "The Holy Bible".
It was the last album the band made as a quartet before their guitarist vanished (Still hasn't been found more than 7 years later). In hindsight, it seems like such a desperate roar of both defiance, anger, sorrow and absolute desperation. Haunts me every time I listen to it, which is at LEAST 2 or 3 times a month.
Book - The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy (Actually the final book, Mostly Harmless, but I look at the whole thing as one giant, hilarious epic).
Douglas Adams created this beatifully clever and deliriously funny cast of characters...and then blows them up. How is this NOT the saddest book ever?

his new book is even sadder - it's basically a collection of letters, articles, and part of a story put together from stuff on his hard drive when he died. It's even more tragic leaving behind his wife and little girl.

I would have hit that.
Many of the rest of you would have too, admit it.
Anyway: book - "A Prayer for Owen Meany" by John Irving. It will make you grown men cry.
The movie adaptation, "Simon Birch", is also sad, not because it inspires such a strong melacholy emotional response, but rather because Hollywood took such a great book and turned it into so shitty a film.

You realize it was a book first, right? It was an immensely popular comic in britain with a cult following in the US. Judge Dredd is a bad ass when he isn't played by Stallone.
