CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/internet/10/07/microsoft.eolas.ap/index.html)

... The technology allowed for the embedding of small interactive programs such as "plug-ins" or "applets," into World Wide Web documents. ...

Not that I'm a fan of Microsoft, but this is just silly. Especially if you read it and read what they have to do to make it all "ok" - put a dialog box up that says "do you want to run this plug in" - ponderous.

I don't see how this is bad. It talked about this technology being part of banners and pop-up add, as well as other programs. I wouldn't mid being able to cancel ads at all.

If someone sees the downside to this please let me know because I'm not seeing it on my initial read of that story.

All I know is that I tried the SpyBot software that was recommended here [MSteels?]; and it regularly finds tracking software, which logs the sites you visit while online, and send the information to those people; it may contain personal info about you.

How can they do this? You agreed to it.

If there is one phrase that is ignored today it is "I have read and agree to the terms of the following..." before you hit ENTER on certian websites, or when you install programs. It's there. Yahoo tracks Everything.

well a pop up is significantly different (and as far as I can tell not covered under this) than a plug in to open a Word doc, a pdf file, a movie, etc. Having the browser have to ask you before you open any of these will get annoying after a while. Making it an OPTION based on the filetype would be nice, but I dont think they're going to make that your choice.

btw I reread this - the only thing about a banner ad that might be covered is if it uses Flash or somesuch - if a banner ad uses just text or a jpg image/gif image, this is not covered by this - you'll still get hit with them.

btw WooHoo 1000 posts! Where's my prize?
