which is being reduced and which is being oxidized? by the way an explanation would be of great help.....
energy+CO2+H2 > CH2O+H2O
sorry i couldnt figure out how to subscript.

think OIL RIG:
Oxidation Involves Loss
Reduction Involves Gain
Whichever is gaining an election is reducing, and whichever is losing an electron is oxidizing. It's been a year since chem though, so i can't figure out which is which.

Well, it's called "oxidation". Think about what that might mean.

reduction- acceptance of an electron
oxidation- loss of an electron
im guessing the hydrogen gets oxydized but i need an explanation, i have a test on tuesday.

Google reduction oxidation or redox - you will find a ton of websites explaining what it is with many examples.

Too Cute is quite Correct, but Chemistry can be confusing, because in Redox equations, it doesn't have to be the Oxygen that's oxidizing. Illogical and counter-intuitive? Yep.
the term is an anachronism.

Mike : That's the second time you've used the word "anachronism" in a post where it made no sense to me. I dunna think i' means what you think it means!

I was simply pointing out - if you get confused - think about what happens with oxygen is involved. I always remembered it by what happens when iron rusts - it is oxidized - and as things rust, they lose mass, right? The iron is being oxidized and losing electrons to the oxygen. Like I said: google. You'll find a million examples.

HELP!!! Too Cute has a Sword at my Throat. Arrrgh!... blarrrrghhh.....
Anachronism:
2: a person or a thing that is chronologically out of place; especially : one from a former age that is incongruous in the present.
This is what i found on the AOL dictionary. I'm pretty sure I'm using it correctly, in this case.
Yep; rust = oxidation. But they kept the term 'oxidation' for ALL reactions involving e- loss in Redox Reactions. Back in the day Oxidation meant a reaction with Oxygen; and it's no longer Always with oxygen. Hence, it's out of place, in a temporal sense. Old Fashioned, if you will?
Anyway, the cool thing is that while we need oxygen to live, and it's a terribly corrosive gas.
And Too Cute, I'm 40, by definition, an Anachronism. I'm So OLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I seem to remember in Biology class the professor saying that Oxidation involves adding Hydrogen and Reduction involves reducing Hydrogen.
