When John Sterling says "numbers mean nothing, you can throw these out the window", what does he mean?
The numbers are not proving what will happen next, they are simply predictors based upon historical fact. To me, the numbers Are Important. Provided that they are not trumped up or too narrow (i.e. that the Yankees beat the Twins 13 times in a row does not accurately determine that the current makeups of the current teams will necessarily bolster this trend).

Somebody, and I forget who probably Vin Scully or something, once had a good quote about baseball stats.
"Baseball fans use statistics in much the same way a drunk uses a lamp post; more for support than illumination."
Put that in your ass and smoke it.
*edit* - That last part, the whole asss and smoking thing, was me, not Vin Scully.

In the late 70s (i beleive it was 77) a guy named Bill James began to write his yearly "Baseball Abstract" In it he began to propose entirely new ways to record baseball.
Basically he felt that fielding statistics like errors were completely inaccurate. Soon he began to focus on offensive stats. He thought the most important stat was on base percentage and that things like RBIs were overpriced (you cant get RBI without people on base)
In Moneyball, Michael Lewis devotes a chapter to Bill and his others who share his view. Lewis also explains how most of baseball have refused to recognize what James has to say--except for Billy Beane. By looking at baseball statistics in a non-traditional way.
By throwing out all the old statistics, and evaluating players in his new way, Billy Beane has been able to field consistantly good teams in Oakland even though he has had almost no money.

I agree, James, that's why it's always stuck in my mind.

statistics in any sports dont matter as much as people make them. we got into that type of thing with the QB's. marino has the stats of a king, yet never won it because his overall numbers dont matter.
the OBP is prob the most important stat in baseball. you can be hitting 172, if your OBP is over 400, you're doin your job. look at the year bonds hit 73 homers, and look at his RBI's and what his team did. no one else gets on base, and you dont win, no matter who plays on the team cough sammy sosa cough. it took him how long to get that team to a playoff win, and in his lowest statistical year in prob 4 or 5.
