View Full Version : Ludacris: Black Guy or Nigger?

Seeing his latest video "Chicken n Beer" makes me wonder, should black people as a whole just call it quits? One of their spokesmen seems to think so. In the span of 4 minutes, Ludacris's video flashes images of giant beer and chicken legs as well as Ludacris's head on an infant's body as he dances next to a scantily-clad woman. I'm trying to think of a worse stereotype for African-Americans, but I'm coming up blank. Here are some choice quotes from an interview with BET.com:
"The name of my third album is gonna be called Chicken and Beer," he said. "People wanna know what I'm all about, and I'm letting you know. Chicken and beer, man. That's all we consume. I mean, really not necessarily beer but all alcoholic beverages. Chicken and Beer just got a ring to it. I swear, being on the road, [I've learned there] is so many ways to cook chicken."
"You can saute it," he continued. "You could fry it. You could broil it. Whatever, it's like no matter what I'm doing, no matter what part of the day it is, no matter what day it actually is I find myself eating all different kinds of chicken all the damn time. So I'm just letting you know, Ludacris is a chicken and beer man."
"Basically, the song's talking about all these women when you get into the mode of foreplay and you about to get down and dirty with your girl," he said. "They're talking all this and that. It's basically like 'Man, just shut the hell up and let me do my thang. I know what I'm doing.'"
At first I thought the whole "Chicken n Beer" thing for the album was supposed to be a shot at Bill O'Reilly, saying "I'm black, so a racist like you must think all I do is drink beer and eat chicken". Well, it turns out Ludacris does, in fact, harbor a strong affinity for poultry and malt liqour. So much so that he decided to put more chicken on his dinner table by singing about the chicken he loves so dearly.
In case anybody wants to label me as a racist, let me close with this quote from Chris Rock: "I love black people, but I hate niggers."

Yes.

What's next, DMM is D&M's #1 fan? AWFUL.
I just think Ludacris is a clown. Given his name, I wouldn't think that would suprise anyone. But I guess it does.
Ever hear the Dave Chappelle bit about what happened when he wanted to order chicken down south? Hilarity.
One of their spokesmen seems to think so.
Does this mean Gwar is a spokesgroup for me and my proud white sistas and brothas? Damn.
And my vote goes for white people calling it quits every since "The Mullets" went on the air. Oh, shit, there's a black guy on that show, too. We're ALL doomed.

I'm not saying Ludacris represents all black people, I'm saying he's a shithead for doing something that is a negative sterotype for blacks.
Are Italians whoeat spaghetti and meatballs stereotypes also?
If Pavarotti ever sings about spaghetti and meatballs, then he's giving into a negative stereotype. But so far, I haven't seen it so I fail to see the comparison.
"People wanna know what I'm all about, and I'm letting you know. Chicken and beer, man.
Liking chicken and beer isn't a bad thing. However, music is meant to be an expression of emotion and apparently Ludacris's only real conviction at the time this song was written was that he liked chicken and beer.
And why should white people get a free pass for all the dumb shit white celebrities do?
White people are not second-class citizens struggling to advance in American society. Black people, on the other hand, are. So white people do get a free pass because they are in the majority and therefore not judged by solely the media. When someone like Ludacris makes money producing simplistic shit like this, black people as a whole look like assholes, especially to ignorant people who don't know many black people and base their opinion of African-Americans by what they see on teevee.

When someone like Ludacris makes money producing simplistic shit like this, black people as a whole look like assholes, especially to ignorant people who don't know many black people and base their opinion of African-Americans by what they see on teevee.
So how is this the problem of anyone other than the retards that are going to assume this? Odds are they were going to think that way regardless of whether Ludacris showed up or not. And are black people actually obligated to somehow "explain away" Ludacris and his actions? Ludacris was saying, "Ludacris loves his chicken and beer!" If anyone wants to assume that means "all black people love chicken and beer," that's THEIR problem, not the average black person on the street.
I mean, this notion basically says black people can't ever poke fun at their own stereotypes. Everyone else can make fun of it but them? Or NOBODY can make fun of it? Are all minorities relegated to never enagaging in self-depricating humor? Is the topic of chicken and/or beer of limits to black people in a public forum in ALL contexts except to denounce it? Or should they simply not ever express how much they like either product? Because seemingly ANY endorsement of chicken and beer means they're not ACTUALLY enjoying it, but just fullfilling a stereotype...right?
Of course, I can't figure out why the hell enjoying chicken or beer would ever be a negative stereotype in the first place. It seems like some people are amused WAY too easily...

Nobody has to be personally ashamed or have to explain THEMSELVES over ANYTHING any celebrity does just because you share the same color.
NYD thinks Ludacris is an idiot? Great, grand...I still don't see why it sounds like other black people have to pick up the slack to "make up" for what he's done or said. I think Toby Kieth is a loudmouthed moron, but I don't assume that white people have to "explain for him", or even other country artists.
Nice try, though.

Malt liquor
In the United States, this term indicates a strong lager, often made with a high amount of sugar to produce a thin but potent brew. These beers are designed to deliver a strong alcoholic punch (around 6-8%) but little else. They are light beers with a kick, often cheaply made with a high proportion of sugar and using enzymes to create more alcohol. Sales of malt liquor account for about 4% of the total American beer market
Okay, I concede.

it was a really good story with a pretty good point - aside from the typical shit spike will throw into shock or raise awareness about something that's common sense.
but look at tv today - will & grace, any show on the wb, whoopie's show, etc... it's ok for someone playing a gay person can throw around the word queer and gay, puerto ricans can make racial jokes about other hispanics...

for me, spike is essentially in the same boat as kevin smith. there are things you'll groan about, but the content is better than the over all production.
but getting back to the tread. ludacris is an entertainer, not an figurehead. yes he's perpetuating a sterotype- but it's seeming more and more that rap jumped the shark a long time ago.
let's put it this way- i was listening to npr the other day and two more than obvious white guys were talking about the new words in the dictionary- particularly ebonics. they even said, with underground culture it takes 5 years for words and phrases to enter popular fringe media. then another 5 for mainstream popular to pick it up. nowadays, entertainment tonight is on top of catch phrases and such.
musically, our culture is stagnant.

Well, I'd be the last person to agree with that.
I think it's more our culture is stagnant when it comes to the music it CHOOSES to pay attention to.

tell me what's cutting edge these days?
you could argue that certain genres are "progressions," buy i feel that things are being rehashed. yes there are some good bands/ acts/ talented musicians out there, but there isn't a new sound.

Well, whether people like it or not, "techno/electronica" and all its seemingly endless sub-genres IS the ever-progessing "new sound". Whether it'll be on its own or integrated with previously existing forms of music, it's a musical grouping that's barely had the surface scratched. Just as rockabilly, rock 'n' roll, metal, punk and hip-hop before it, it's ushering a new musical sensebility and new ideas and new talents left and right, in terms of both production AND performance.
That said, "rock" and hip-hop are not near being "done" or "dead" or "over". While we often get stuck with mere variations on a single "sound", there's plenty of bands and acts coming out each year trying to tweek things a little bit or re-energize the "scene". It's only not existing for those who don't want to bother taking the time to find it and listen and enjoy.

i'm just saying that there hasn't been a new genre of music. granted there is new talent changing the standards of today- but nothing ground breaking.
sort of how the indy sound was a variation of alternative, that is now pop (to a point)

I think we should all accept the fact that mainstream music has become an ineffectual form of expression and dismiss all mainstream music on that ground. It's over people. Mainstream music is dead. Marketing has taken over.
The best thing you can do is ignore that which they are trying to shove down your throats...the fabricated controversey...the gratuitious sexual imagery...it's all emotionally and intellectually worthless.

Oh God, please don't tell me that this means that Moby will be remembered 10, 20, 30, etc. years from now as some sort of great musical icon. I don't know if I want to live in THAT world.

I'm kind of busy this weekend, so can you maybe look for me? Please email me the results. You know I trust you.
