When Yankee Stadium was renovated in the mid '70's, it marked the end of what is known as obstructed view seating. There are no obstructed view seats in Yankee Stadium.
With that said, no matter where you sit, there is always going to be some portion of the field (or scoreboard) that you cannot see. For example, from my weekend seats in Section 2 behind home plate, I have an excellent view of the field, but I cannot see into the corners in left and right field. That's fine with me ; I don't consider my seats to have an obstructed view - it's just the way the stadium is built.
So I went to the doubleheader last Friday night. When I bought my $20.00 ticket at the box office, the ticket agent told me that all he had was obstructed view seating in that price range. Bullshit. If I didn't know any better - if I was visiting from Kansas - I would have probably said, "oh, dear, I don't want an obstructed view...do you have anything better?" and I probably would have spent double (or more) for a decent seat.
I'm 100% sure that this was a scam on the part of the Yankees box office. They had plenty of seats available. In fact, the place was less than half full for the first game, and there were plenty of empty seats for the second game (this was a single-admission doubleheader). They wanted to sell out their more expensive box seats before they sold their $20.00 seats. So basically they tried to dissuade people from buying those seats by saying they were "obstructed view."
You may think I'm being overly cynical, but I can assure you that I'm not. Although they could probably make an argument that the seats are obstructed view (i.e., you cannot see the left field corner), they have never been described as obstructed view on the seating chart (nor are they sold at a discount). I have purchased similar seats on countless occassions, and was never told they were obstructed view. The Mets have a number of obstructed view seats at Shea in the loge and mezzanine (back rows where you cannot see the scoreboard), and they are sold at a discount.
So basically it was a scam - I'm certain of that.
