Has anyone seen the alarming trend with Google? 90% of the links it offers are dead and "Error 404" type messeges. Whats up with that? Seems every time there is a good resource site like that, that they seem to dry up after 3 or 4 years. Anyone notice that?

Yeah, I have noticed that too. Do you think the French are somehow behind it?

Hm,I noticed that with google image search more images seem to not exist anymore, but not really with the regular search.... well, I don't know. Have you tried yahoo or MSN or altavista or any of the other gazillion search engines? Google used to be better, but if it's not working for you maybe one of the other ones will.

I haven't seen it as bad as 90%
Google uses some kind of automated system to gather links, but it doesn't address changes or deletions. It just keeps gathering more links.
It would be nice if they had somekind of "report this link dead" feature, so that when people get a bad link they can kill it.

Ever notice the "Cached" link? If the site is gone, click that and you can see a google backup of it.

I wish they had that feature for images as well.
Also what the hell happened to HotBot, I remember using that site a lot, now it's joke. Also Excite fell apart too, I remember using Excite a lot back in the day. Check out HotBot (http://www.hotbot.com/Default.asp?query=)

Yeah, Google has really gone downhill lately. It was the best about a year and a half ago before it was the mainstream choice. When everyone else used Yahoo, Google was the best.
Hopefully they'll get their shit together.

Also, I don't know if anyone else has noticed this but Yahoo also caches webpages as well. Plus it also has an image search feature as well, just click the tab at the top. Lots of people I know don't like Yahoo, but I still find it reliable for a lot of things.

First, Yahoo was the shit
Then came Hotbot, which was better because you didn't have to list yourself in the directory
Then Hotbot didn't update enough and Altavista became the search engine of choice.
As Altavista started to slide, Google appeared and became the engine of choice.

I read an article about why some of this happens; it was in Scientific American and the fairly amazing fact was this:
Go back as little as 5 years; to 1998.
Half, 50% of the websites that existed then do not exist anymore.
This is Not what's happening with Goggle, but it shows how outdated websites become. Remember all the search engines before Google? All the failed websites? News sites?
And just because they dont exist doesnt mean they arent mentioned [hence a word search would return] on OTHER sites; and these sites will come up on current search engines, while the original site referenced in so many other sites no longer exists.
Weird about half of the websites; but not really, when you think about the increase in sites in sheer numbers...and they predict we havent even BEGUN to Really Wire the planet. That's fact. Theyre just being cautious. Half of the Earth's population has never set eyes on a Computer.
And Yes, count me in also; goggle used to return excellent, relevant links. That's exactly why it Crushed everyone; but wow, no longer.
[EDIT: Have i acheived Thread Killer status yet?]
